Oh, There’s Nothing Like Ham For The Holidays

Earlier today I was trying to figure out what I might blog about tonight, and then out of nowhere I thought, “THE HAM! I NEED TO TELL THEM ABOUT THE HAM!”

Because remember how I’ve given away fifteen pounds of Petit Jean bacon a couple of times? Well, not too long ago Misty from Petit Jean Meats emailed me and said something along the lines of, “Hey – would you be interested in giving away a ham on your blog?”

And I said, “Oh, you know me – I don’t really care for meat.”

I KID.

What I really said was that I would love to give away a ham, and today, WHAT DO YOU KNOW, that is exactly what I’m doing.

It’s not just any ham, mind you. It’s fancy ham.

Screen Shot 2013-11-19 at 7.30.41 PM

It’s half a smoked spiral ham – about 7-9 pounds (worth 65 American dollars) – and here’s the description from the Petit Jean website.

Every Ozark Hickory Smoked Spiral Sliced ham is individually hand -trimmed and seasoned with a blend of cloves, cinnamon, and other special ingredients before going into our old-fashioned smokehouse. Inside our smokehouse, each ham soaks up the smoke from smoldering hickory chips for at least 16 hours. The result is a ham that is fully cooked, moist and tender through and through, with a incredible smoky flavor that goes all the way to the bone.

Doesn’t that sound delicious? Petit Jean is a great company – and since I know for a fact that they do wondrous things with bacon, I have mighty high expectations for the ham.

I’m gonna leave this giveaway open until Friday morning about 10 central – and then I’ll close it and draw for a winner. Once I get the winner’s address, I’ll coordinate with Misty to see when and how long it will take to ship (that way you’ll know if it’s possible to have it at your house for Thanksgiving – or if it makes more sense to have it shipped closer to Christmas).

I’ll announce the winner here and on my blog Facebook page by noon on Friday.

So. To enter the giveaway, just answer one simple question: What dish do you look forward to the most on Thanksgiving day? Sweet potato casserole? Fried turkey (I see you, Louisiana)? Pecan pie?

Happy Ham, y’all!

  16. That is so funny that you happened to mention fried turkey. I grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and am now living with my husband in New Orleans. I never had fried turkey growing up, but my husband had it often (he’s originally from New Orleans). Anyways, he made one this past weekend for the first time and it was delicious!! Now I understand what all the type was about :) But other than the turkey, my favorite Thanksgiving dish is cornbread dressing. Thanks for doing this giveaway!

  17. I’ll never forget the look on my grandson’s little face when he took a bite of my sweet potato casserole(with pecans). He thought he had gotten dessert first!! Hard to beat the yumminest(new word) of sweet potato casserole but cornbread dressing is a close second. And I’d choose ham over turkey every time.

  18. Julie Reynolds says:

My mama’s dressing, sweet potato casserole and my own pumpkin trifle. Thanks for thinking of us Soph!

  19. My dad does most of the holiday cooking, and of everything he makes for Thanksgiving, my favorite is his stuffing. He used the Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix and stuffs it INTO the bird, and it has sausage in it, and it is one of the best things ever. In fact, my stomach is growling now, just thinking about it!

  20. I love love love sweet potato pie!!!

  21. Sweet potato casserole, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish, and, and, and etc….. repeat. Thank you so much Boo Mama!!

  39. Love my grandma’s sweet potatoes with caramel sauce and marshmallows. Only get them once a year!

  44. My mama’s creamed corn! Only Silver Queen will do. :-)

  45. We’ll, I hate to follow a trend, but I have to say the dressing. We are Canadians who lived for 15 years in Georgia, so we do bread stuffing and corn bread dressing for both (!) thanksgivings and I could eat myself into a carb coma.

  46. I look forward to the turkey and real cranberry sauce (not the canned stuff).

  47. Potato filling, like my grandma used to make. My Mom and I try to duplicate it every year…sometimes with more success than others. But the smell of the celery and onion bubbling away in the butter and then the sage and spices hit the pan – yum!

    Love cornbread dressing. …

  49. Most definitely my mother-in-law’s sweet potato pie with a big dollop of whipped cream!

  52. heather from nc says:

Sweet potato casserole…the one topped with pecan brown sugar crumble, not marshmallows. Marshmallows have their place and it is in a s’more, not on a sweet potato.

  96. I come from a loooong line of carnivores and am looking forward to the meat ( 2 kinds of ham, turkey, deep fried turkey, prime rib, venison, and Aunt Carlene will fry you up some fish or chicken should you so desire, because sometimes a body just gets a hankerin’ for something different you know!) and I never met a starch I didn’t like ( that same sweet aunt will make me my very own biscuits, too, because “that child never did like store bought bread, she just does not like it”) but the first thing I will reach for is the homegrown green beans cooked down in bacon for hours. Have mercy.

  97. Pecan Pie!!!

  98. Gravy….it is all about the gravy!!!

  99. Oh the dressing and gravy for sure!!!

  100. I’m not sure I can narrow it down to one- I love dressing and sweet potato casserole equally!!!
