I love y’all, I really do. This feedback comes from a place of love. Your podcast – for a long time, one of my favorites and kind of a ministry to women – has become one giant ad. It’s getting almost impossible to listen to because there’s an ad every 5-6 minutes. It feels like more ads than content and it’s really disappointing…it feels so greedy and desperate. (Pitching cat litter when neither of you has a cat?) No other podcasts have this many ads. I just want to hear about your lives and favorite things and funny stories and skincare every Thursday without a constant sales pitch. Please cut back on the ads!
Hey Becky,
I get what you are saying, and definitely have noticed that as Melanie and Sophie have become more successful, ad time has increased, because businesses WANT to partner with them (because their podcast is so fun and popular).
I don’t think it’s fair to expect Sophie and Melanie to produce a podcast every.single.week that costs us ZERO American dollars without including a good amount of ads. Other free podcasts have a similar ad/content balance (Lazy Genuis, The Popcast, etc.). This is literally Sophie and Melanie’s full-time job, so they need to monetize their work. It’s not greedy or desperate. It’s a BUSINESS.
On the Patreon side, since we do pay for that podcast and other content, I think it’s fair that there are fewer ads over there. On the weekly free podcast, fast forward through the ads if you don’t like them. To me, they are a sign that these ladies are successful podcasters with an engaged audience that businesses want to reach.
I was in the newspaper business for a chunk of my career, and if each page wasn’t half-covered with ads, we were not making money. It’s no different with podcasts.
(I admit, I also got a kick out of the cat litter ad…but I am sure there are some cat lovers in the podcast audience who were intrigued by this info. Otherwise, the cat litter company wouldn’t have chosen this podcast as a place to spend their advertising budget).
I, too, understand the concept of capitalism and enjoy its fruits. It’s great they are popular and successful. But just like you don’t write books to make money, you don’t do a podcast or a blog or any creative pursuit to make money. If you can make money, that’s fantastic. But when there’s an ad every 5 minutes, your true purpose is obscured, and that’s my point. A podcast can contain ads without the podcast becoming one giant ad. But it’s actually OK if you think the way you do and I think the way I do – to each her own. It’s just becoming a lot less fun *for me personally* to listen to the girls between so many ads and I know from reading reviews on the podcast app that I’m not the only one.
