Next Up: Tie-Dying!

Now I’m sure that based on some of my previous posts about food, y’all probably think that I get up every morning and immediately begin the process of deep frying biscuits for my family.

That assumption really couldn’t be farther from the truth, because deep frying is a labor-intensive process, and what I really do is saute’ the biscuit dough in a stick of butter and then roll it around in some cheese before I begin the actual frying. I find that the fat content of cheese remains completely intact when it’s surrounded by a layer of butter and then sealed with peanut oil.

Try it and see! And tell your cardiologist that BooMama sent you!

Seriously, despite the fact that my cooking does have a strong Southern bent (potatoes with cream cheese, cheddar cheese AND sour cream, anyone?), I do enjoy some foods that are, you know, healthy. Like berries. And vegetables. And, in the surprising-for-a-Southern-girl category, granola.

I know! Can you believe it? And I don’t even put it in a cobbler or anything!

Anyway, last night I was clicking through some recipes, trying to find something breakfast-y to make because tomorrow is my Sunday to cook for our praise team and band (use the words “chancel choir” and “orchestra” if the thought of DRUMS IN CHURCH makes you twitch), and I always like to do something on the lighter side for them. Since they have to sing in front of the congregation, I try to fix foods that will result in the least amount of, um, gastric disturbance possible, because there’s nothing quite like a monster belch straight into a microphone to bring the worship party to a screeching halt, now is there?

Can I get an amen?*

And much to my surprise, on my quest for light but hearty breakfast foods, I found a recipe for granola, which I had no idea you could make at home. No idea.

I don’t know why it never occurred to me that I could combine oats and fruit and nuts and seeds and bind them together with honey and wheat germ in the confines of my own kitchen, but it didn’t. Somehow I always pictured little hippie elves harvesting the granola from some magical granola tree (in California, of course), and in my limited imagination the elves would be wearing Birkenstocks and saying things like “DUDE. These dried cranberries are righteous!” and then they’d load their Volkswagen van with their granola goodness and make deliveries to grocery stores (albeit small mom and pop ones – and most definitely the ones with an organic bent) nationwide while the “Hair” soundtrack played in the background.

Because that’s practical. And realistic. And all.

So today I’m venturing into unchartered food territory. I’m making granola. This event may not be noteworthy to most of y’all, but I have lived in the South all of my life, and we typically don’t fool with grains unless we first boil the life out of them and then slather them with butter or sugar. That’s our heritage, y’all.

By the way, when I get to the grocery store in a few minutes, I plan to announce to any passersby in my aisle that I’M BUYING WHEAT GERM. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Dude.

* That was for you, Addie. :-)

  1. So funny! I’m picturing the Keebler elves in hemp clothing and Birks right now.

  2. Have you tried Barb’s recipe for Cheddar Bay Biscuits? Only 5 ingredients, and not labor-intensive AT ALL.

I just gotta know. Will you be wearing Birkenstocks to the grocery store?

  3. LOL, oh my goodness, as a California girl born and raised, that was hilarious to me! Let us know if your recipe doesn’t work out. I have three different granola recipes. Yep. Three.

Christy- proud native of the “land of fruits and nuts” :)

  4. As a child,I can remember my grandmother having wheat germ in her pantry. Never knew what it was for, or why anyone would want to eat it. Still don’t know why she had it because I never saw her use it. But then again, I don’t recall my grandmother cooking much. (She was a nurse in a doctor’s office, no husband, and my mom and I lived with her)
Anyway, it just seemed more like something you would eat in place of a laxative.

  5. Okay, I too just found out that you can make granola watching Paula Deen or maybe it was Rachel Ray. Still I DID NOT KNOW THAT. And as for you post regarding your blooging routine,I…AM…RIGHT…THERE…WITH…YOU! Since i have discovered this small world of bloggers I have become obsessed. i wrote about the same thing yesterday-there is a whole world out there still waiting to be explored so I am outta here!
    Have a great weekend!

  6. Once again, I am amazed!!!!! I would just go to the grocery store and buy the box that is clearly marked “Granola”. You’re soo good!! Maybe you could come and cook for our church sometime!!!!!!!!

  7. Good Morning Boomama,

Thanks for the laugh, you made my morning.

If it is any consolation, we Canadians have a dish we have affectionately dubbed “heart attack on a plate” More commonly known as Poutine.

You layer french fries (preferable home made), gravy (again preferably home made and of the chicken variety), and cheese curd (or if you are me, shredded mozzarella cheese) and serve with ketchup.

Oh, and if any one tries this, tell the cardiologist that Boomama started it…… :-)

To make this funnier, I now live in the same state as Christy above – California – land of healthy eaters.

    Happy Saturday!

P.S. I have a delicious fruit salad recipe if you are looking for something you can make tonight that will be great with granola! Just email me for it.

  8. Careful! You are going to get addicted to the homemade! I made homemade about two years ago and now it is all we eat. Let me know if you enjoy it. I have a great recipe for cherry vanilla yogurt granola. Very simple and easy.

  9. OH MY WORD!!!

What on earth would I do without my BooMama fix in the morning? I’m hooked! I’m addicted! Is there some sort of 12-Step Program available somewhere?

M’dear, you are such a hoot…I have never found myself laughing out loud at posts before yours. Possibly because I relate so well to them. I ARE you – in so many ways. Keep up the good work!

    Be sweet!

  10. You crack me up. I love ya!

  11. “And tell your cardiologist, Boomama sent you!” Classic.

Can’t wait to hear how your venture into nature’s goodness turns out!

  12. I just noticed my link on your sidebar! Thanks Boomama, it’s an honor.

  13. My friend has been telling me that she has a great granola recipe…she hasn’t given it me though..I’ll have to call her and get now!! Hope it tastes yummy, dude.

  14. I have 2 granola recipes as well if ya need them. Don’t you just feel real healthy announcing that your buying wheat germ. I am over weight and it makes me feel skinny and preppy when I buy it. Like people literally look at my food on the conveyer belt and it makes me proud that it is all healthy stuff, I want to say to them, Ive already lost 100 pounds geeze.
    Yep granola is yummo

  15. Hee, Hee You know I was giving you a big ‘ole Amen Sistah!

What’s funny is awhile back I told Ben what you did for the praise team, and then I proceeded to try to try and visualize about the yummy goodness that you presented to them. His comment was, “Um, I’m not sure we could handle all that before we go onstage.” He’ll be pleased to know that you are already on top of that!

  16. I’m still waiting for the tie-dying part. Did you forget?

    (I can’t believe you’re making granola.)

  17. Too funny….I love the hippie elves who make my granola!

  18. MicheleinNZ says:

I make granola all the time. It’s super easy and you can kinda add in whatever you have around – dried cranberries, raisins, dried apricots, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, whatever. It’s yum. and cheap too.

  19. The last time I made granola was about 8 years ago when I spent half of my summer in the jungles of Brazil. Everything had to be made from scratch, and I remember we had the hardest time not burning it. Hope you’ll post the recipe if it turns out well. I remember my mom made it for us once in a while (and we lived in south MS), but I’ve never tried it for my boys.

  20. Ohmygosh. Youcrackmeup!!

I just had to comment, considering my username and all. I was given the name from my sorority because I like to, you know, go outside and stuff.

I’m a southern girl too- raised in Columbus, GA. I love me some fried-fatty-goodness.

And the ironic thing? I actually tie-dying at my son’s 1st birthday party in a couple weeks. Shhh. don’t tell– it’s a secret.

  21. I think Kramer got a ride with those elves on his way to California- the one where they thought he was a serial killer.

I would just love to see the little Alabama high school baggers at Winn Dixie direct you to the “wheat germ” aisle.

  22. I make granola for T all the time. It’s pretty good as a snack too. Let us know how it goes. BTW–even if I stop blogging, I’ll still be reading my top ten, of which you are one!!!

  23. Very funny post boomama. I loved it. I make granola all the time…but would love your recipe if it turns out as good as you hope.

  24. I have a wonderful (maybe more “awesome, dude”) recipe for granola — also includes wheat germ!! Hope it turns out well — I think it’s super easy, super yummy!

  25. Okay – I want everybody’s recipes. :-) This one is good – but I’d love to see what other combinations y’all have. You can either post them here or email them to me – whichever is easier for you.

    Thanks, y’all!

  26. You know you really make me feel like I’m reading the blog of an old friend.

First of all a baked potato with cream cheese, cheddar cheese AND sour cream sounds SO GOOD. Of course, add some bacon bits to it and it’d be perfect ;-)

Second, it was so nice of you to be so thoughtful as to make that granola.

  27. That goes right along with the joke about belonging to the granola church……full of flakes, fruits and nuts!!!!!!!! you do indeed crack me up, too!!!you add a bright humorous spot to everyday!

  28. Hello again BooMama, I also was LOL and having a hard time keeping the saliva in my mouth! Thanks for responding to a 2 day old blogger needing help! Amen

  29. Too funny! I do like homemade granola better than store bought because it is really fresh. I like to toast the grains and nuts before combining them with the fruit.
    YUM!

  30. I hope that obnoxious grocery store lady with the tape recorder is there to see your wheat germ. That’ll show her!

  31. Being from the south and all–I’ve never tried my hand at granola. But I have a friend who recently suggested the crock pot version and even I thought it sounded intriguing.

Let us know how it turned out! :)

  32. what more is there to say?

I don’t even eat granola altho I have a slim concept of what it is!

But this post, makes me wanna try it, right after those potatoes with all the cheese and such. . .

    You ladies are f.u.n.n.y.!

  33. You crack me up! I’ll never think of granola the same boring way again! Around here, we love granola on top of yogurt in the mornin’.

  34. Hello Boomama…as promised…I visited and what a post to read…I wouldn’t know where to start for granola and by the way…AMEN!!! if someone hasn’t beat me to it…lol..hope your experiment goes well…Jess

  35. You crack me up….thanks for the laugh this morning :-)
    Blessings
    EaglesWings

  36. Too funny! Thank you, I needed the laughs. Ü

  37. You really make me laugh – I am Lea Marg’s friend who reads you everyday!! I have a great granola recipe from the Barefoot Contessa – I make it for breakfast and serve it over lowfat yograt and fresh berries – people really think you have done something. Keep Blogging – you are funny I wish I could have meet you when you were in Greenville – my house does not have damp carpet or a cat!!!

  38. Please make some for me and send via FedEx asap. I’ll tell you if it’s good or not. :)

  39. Sister – As much as I made, I should be able to keep you in full granola supply until 2008. :-)

  40. You go girl! You’re a better woman than I trying to make it, I just buy it! :) Although, the health-nut that I am I do buy wheat germ to put in my smoothies.

But I must say you have to share the recipes you got. You have inspired me!

  41. After making all our own food for sevral years due to food allergies and burning more than a few batches of GRanola (because I never set a timer and have such a great sense of time-or do if I don’t get distracted) I discovered an awesome crockpot granola recipe whch is currently posted over at my site(instead of trying to copy it here I used the link as my URL if you want to try the recipe out.) It is by far the easiest granola I have ever found.
