Oh, What Else Am I Going To “Write” About?

A few recent search engine terms that have brought people to the blawg:

michael johns ascot – Oh, you have come to the right place, merry Googler.

Let us gaze upon the ascot and marvel at Michael Johns’ fashion derring-do.

Not only was it an ambitious accessory choice, it was also a successful one.

BRAVO.

uncle ben’s casserole and shrimp – I had actually forgotten about this recipe until tonight.

And now I feel like the person who found my blog using that particular phrase has done me a huge service because he or she has pretty much planned my Sunday lunch.

You know, the internet is genius.

god never closes a door without opening – A WINDOW! THE ANSWER IS “A WINDOW!”

I do believe I’ve qualified for the bonus round.

Perhaps even the Showcase Showdown.

paula deens wedding ring – IS KICKIN’.

But if I had Paula’s wedding ring, I do not think that that I would knead dough and / or handle raw meat while wearing it.

I’m not judging, only stating what I feel would be my personal choice.

BECAUSE THAT RING IS KICKIN’.

how is steinmarts?Martha? Martha? Is that you? Have you finally found the internet? WELCOME TO THE BLOG!

And Steinmarts is fine, by the way. But it misses you terribly.

help me get this hunk of wax out my ear – You know, I’d love to. Really. It would bless my soul to be able to help you, because as someone who has abnormally small ear canals, I have quite literally felt your particular brand of clogged ear pain.

What? You can’t hear me? I SAID THAT I HAVE FELT YOUR PAIN.

I SAID! THAT I! HAVE FELT! YOUR PAIN!

The wax is somewhat pesky, isn’t it?

boomama, take one rotisserie chicken – Okay! I have my rotisserie chicken!

So.

Um.

What am I supposed to do now?

I will sit here and await further instructions.

chicken have carbs? – No! Chicken have no carbs! Eat chicken all day, still eat no carbs! Boil chicken. Bake chicken. Grill chicken. NO CARBS!

But no fry chicken. Batter have carbs. Batter GOOD. Add many carbs to chicken. Fried chicken have MANY TASTY CARBS.

Mmmmmm.

This Is Going To Be Incredibly Underwhelming For You

So a few weeks ago I created a little Easter mixtape for the internets.

And the day after I posted my rockin’ Easter mix, I created a WHOLE NEW DIFFERENT MIXTAPE of all my favorite music that reminds me of spring.

And then I promptly forgot about it. Until now.

But now, now I have remembered. And you can find the mix right here. If you click up at the very top of the list – where it says “Springtime” – it’ll take you straight to iTunes where you can listen to snippets of all the songs.

I for one think my mix is quite sassy.

And I do hope that fours – yay, even fives – of you enjoy it.

Carry on.

American Idol – Top 9

I have to tell y’all that I am so excited about tonight’s show because I LOVE ME SOME DOLLY PARTON. I think she’s brilliant and funny and inspiring and wonderful. So I can’t wait to see what she has to say – because she is one phenomenal songwriter. Love her.

Brooke White – “Jolene” – I loved the whole acoustic / folksy feel of this arrangement, and I thought Brooke did a good job with it. That being said, I don’t think she necessarily did anything terribly original with the song. She seemed to have trouble hitting the higher notes on the chorus – but she’s so sincere and genuine that I almost like seeing the little flaws in her performance because it just makes it all the more real.

David Cook – “Little Sparrow” – I’m telling y’all: he gets better every single week. I am really getting attached to his voice – so distinctive, solid and good. Loved it. Which is becoming the norm for me where David Cook is concerned.

Ramiele Malubay – “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?” – I think this was one of her best performances. She was energetic and didn’t try to scream big notes the whole time. She seemed a little out of breath when she was singing the verses, but overall I thought she did a nice job. Good for her.

Jason Castro – “Travelin’ Through” – Oh my word I really liked it. What was so cool about it for me was that it sounded like something I’d put on my iPod and listen to over and over again. Such a great song – and such a fun arrangement. And while I usually agree with Simon, I thought he was off the mark tonight, at least as far as Jason goes.

Carly Smithson – “Here You Come Again” – That was Carly’s best performance so far, I thought. A really cool, different take on a song that was great to begin with. She seems to have a little trouble when she goes too low or too high, but she’s fab when she’s in that middle range. And for me, tonight was leaps and bounds better than anything she’s done so far. I thought it was really pretty.

David Archuleta – “Smokey Mountain Memories” – The main thing that struck me about this song was that the lyrics are just beautiful. And this was David A.’s best performance in several weeks – seemed like the perfect song for him.

Kristy Leigh Cook – “Coat of Many Colors” – She’s definitely way more comfortable with a country song, don’t y’all think? Tonight’s performance didn’t blow me away, but it was solid – she did a nice job with the song.

Syesha Mercado – “I Will Always Love You” – My first thought was “OH, PLEASE BE SO CAREFUL WITH A SONG THAT WHITNEY DID.” Also: I did not understand why it was necessary for her to sit on top of the piano. But still, she did a nice job with a legendary version of this classic song.

Michael Johns – “It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right” – Nice ascot. Is that an ascot? Anyway. As far as his performance is concerned, I TRIPLE LOVED IT. I think the whole bluesy thing TOTALLY worked for him. His version of this song was absolutely incredible. Plan to purchase it on iTunes tomorrow.

Should go – Ramiele

Will go – Kristy Leigh

Best of the night – The husband and I just had a lively IM discussion about this very topic with FryDaddy. Because D and I think Michael Johns was the best, but FryDaddy holds unswervingly to the opinion that David Archuleta stole the show.

And that is all fine and good because clearly Michael Johns was the best. HE ROCKED AN ASCOT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

Oh, I kid.

Only I’m not kidding about the whole Michael-Johns-was-the-best thing.

Really, It Was Just A Matter Of Time…

Just Like Dead Poets Society, Only Not

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on a proposal that has required me to do some research and basically reacquaint myself with a subject that I haven’t studied in about fifteen years.

(Was the information in that paragraph vague enough for you? Good! More vaguery to come!)

And last week, when I started to worry that I was missing huge, critical chunks of information, I thought about one of my college professors who is an expert in the field I’ve been researching. In a fit of spontanaiety, I decided to email her. Because technology, it is oftentimes quite handy.

So I emailed my former professor, Dr. H, and told her what I was working on. I asked her for some input, thanked her for pouring into the life of a crazy college student (THAT WOULD BE ME) way back in the day and basically gave her a summary of what I’ve been up to since the last time we talked.

Including my most recent hobby of RANDOMLY DROPPING BACK INTO FORMER PROFESSORS’ LIVES VIA EMAIL.

Not to mention my ongoing hobby of making former professors twitch when they see the excessive use of sentence fragments on my blog.

A few days later I found a very gracious reply from Dr. H in my inbox, and I was a little surprised by how thrilled I was to hear from her. Dr. H was one of my favorite teachers because she not only knew her stuff – she also knew how to communicate information in a way that made it easy to remember. I took five different courses from her in undergraduate and graduate school, and I really did learn in each one of them.

Dr. H also had a huge impact on my writing, especially when I was a freshman and she very kindly pointed out my tendency to end pretty much every other sentence with “etc.”

For example: “Southern architecture also serves as symbolism in the works of Welty, Faulkner, etc.”

Or: “Plath’s poem Daddy features a narrator with a deep well of bitterness toward an absent father she perceives be cold, cruel, etc.”

If memory serves, the overuse of “etc.” was my eighteen year-old way of trying to cover up for the fact that I had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. So I just held onto the hope that maybe if I tacked an “etc.” on the end of my sentences, my professors WOULD NEVER CATCH ON TO THE FACT THAT I HAD NO MORE INFORMATION TO SHARE.

Oh, I was very crafty.

(Now is when I could tell you about the time I played the role of bathrobe-wearing, chain-smoking Martha in Who’s Afraid of Viriginia Woolf for Dr. H’s Modern Drama class – and for my costume I opted to wear a plaid skirt with a matching sweater and THERE WAS EVEN PLAID ON THE SWEATER, Y’ALL because obviously I was all about KEEPIN’ IT REAL with my ACT-ING.)

(But I won’t be telling you about any of that because it would be far too embarrassing.)

As it turns out, Dr. H is retiring this spring. And as she looks back on her career and reflects on her legacy, I hope she knows what a difference she made in the life of a wide-eyed sorority girl who sported some mighty large acrylic hairbows back in the early 1990’s. There’s no question that I was just a middle-of-the-pack student – albeit one with some misguided delusions of intelligence – but Dr. H made me better. She really and truly cared about making her students better.

Thanks for everything, Dr. H.

And I wonder: are there teachers who had – or who continue to have – a major influence in your life?

Tell me all about ’em. Because I’m feeling sort of nostalgic.

(I may even break out a hair bow.)

(But I draw the line at wearing any sort of matching plaid ensemble.)
