AI – Top 12 Women

Fingers crossed that tonight is better than last night.

And fingers crossed that nobody sings “You Light Up My Life.” Because that would just be wrong.

Here we go.

OH! WAIT! I’m adding a Mr. Linky to the bottom of the post so that you can link to your blog if you’ve posted about American Idol tonight, too. Just please make sure that you link to your specific post and not just to your blog (thanks, Melzie, for the idea!).

Stephanie Edwards – “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore” – She can sing. And she also has some really cute dresses, based on the clips we saw tonight. But am I the only one who thought this song had an odd tempo? I do love that she came out confident, and she was way fun to watch. I like her.

Amy Krebs – “I Can’t Make You Love Me If You Don’t” – She has a great voice – even if she was a little off-key in parts – but the bottom line for me is that this wasn’t a very fun song. It was boring. She’s not boring – but the song felt like it plodded along. I’d love to hear her do something a little more uptempo, and I agree with Randy: she’s better than the song she chose.

Leslie Hunt – “Natural Woman” – Great, rich tone to her voice. She’s a little all over the place with her on-stage moves…but I bet she settles down with time. And can I just say? She has fabulous hair.

Sabrina Sloan – “The Way That I Loved You” – Isn’t she beautiful? LOVED this performance. Very Christina Aguilera-ish. And the good Christina – not that whole XTina “Dirrrty” thing. She seemed to pick the absolute perfect song for her voice – and she is definitely one to watch. Great job.

Antonella Barba – “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” – I agree with Paula: she’s a beautiful girl. That’s all I know to say.

Jordin Sparks – “Gimme One Reason” – She’s a JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, y’all. Good gracious. And she has an absolutely gorgeous smile. As for her singing, I’m LOVIN’ the funky version of a Tracy Chapman song – shows tons of her personality. This girl is adorable, but on top of all the adorableness is a big heapin’ chunk of talent. Love her.

Nicole Tranquillo – Y’all, I have no idea what that song was called. D. and I think it may be called “Stay Together, Baby,” but that’s because those were the only three words we understood. But you know what? The guys in the audience seemed to love it. I just think if she’d done something a little softer, a little less r & b, she probably would have had a much better, much more natural performance.

Haley Scarnato – “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” – One of my most favorite Celine Dion songs – but this performance seemed more like the talent portion of Miss America than “American Idol.” And there’s nothing wrong with that…but compared to, say, Sabrina or Jordin, it seems like she played it safe.

Melinda Doolittle – “Since You’ve Been Gone” – I HAD CHILLBUMPS THE WHOLE TIME. She is phenomenal. And I adore her. And I think that it was one of the best first-night peformances ever on AI. FANTASTIC!

Alaina Alexander – “Brass In The Pocket” – She is a very, very pretty girl.

Gina Glocksen – “All By Myself” – That’s a tough song to sing, and I thought she did a good job. I winced a little bit when she hit the high notes – but she definitely showed off her big voice, and I loved the ending.

LaKisha Jones – “I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” – I cannot think of a bigger, bolder song choice. Miss Lakisha is throwing down the gauntlet on this one (I typed that before Simon said it, just for the record)…and she can FLAT sing. Mercy me. Like D. said: it’s not just that she can sing. She can’t help but sing. It’s just who she is. Unbelievable. She has been working in a bank. With that voice. Working in a bank. Unbelievable.

I think the girls are the ones to watch this year, y’all. They’re in a different league that the guys.

Who will go? Antonella and Alaina. Actually no way both of them will go, because they’re so pretty, but they were the weakest links, I think. So I’ll say Antonella and Haley.

Best of tonight?: It’s a tie for me: Melinda and Lakisha. They’re in a different league.

Holla back in the comments, y’all.

  1. I can’t believe I’m first!! And I just emailed you saying I can’t wait to hear what you said. I agree with all you said. And it’s funny you said that about Haley Scarnotto seeming like she was in the Miss America pageant b/c that’s exactly what I said to Will…except I said I felt like I was watching the Miss Mississippi pageant. Same thing. That’s all I’ll say. Until I see you in person….YEAH!!

  2. How many times can a person use the word “said” in one comment? Sorry for the poorly written sentences. I wasn’t an English major. Obviously.

  3. Oh, Merritt – it’s like days of yore: an AI post…you being the first commenter. And I cannot WAIT to see y’all this weekend. I actually have a little surprise for you and Liz coming up on the blog tomorrow – you are going to kill me, but I have laughed my head off getting everything together.

And Haley Scarnato would have totally won Miss Mississippi tonight. And if we were still in college, we would have re-enacted her performance at least fifteen times by now.

  4. Love, love, love Melinda! I see Lakisha in the final four and Melinda in the final 2 and both of them on the radio a year from now. The guys just couldn’t hold a candle to these gals! Wow!

  5. Rocks in my Dryer says:

I love Melinda! And evidently, she once lived in My City, because the local news is going all nuts about a “local girl” doing so well. Which probably means she once drove through here for a cheeseburger, or something.

Even though Leslie Hunt didn’t knock it out of the ballpark tonight, I’m still kind of pulling for her. She’s just fun.

  6. Phyllis R. says:

Agree totally with every single thing you said! It was actually so fun to watch tonight (as opposed to last night – poor boys.) My FOUR front-runners: LaKisha, Melinda, Sabrina, and Jordin.

  7. Oh my goodness! Did the girls “bring it” or what? The white girls, not so much, except Gina. If it were up to me, I’d send the rest of them home.

  8. The girls were good tonight, much better than the guys! I’d heard the judges say a few weeks ago that the girls were the ones to watch. Melinda is my favorite but LaKisha can sing!
I like the 4 others mentioned too, Melinda, LaKisha, Sabrina and Jordin but people are gonna have to vote to keep a couple of those in.

Ok Boomama, I think we should see y’all’s Miss Mississippi re-enactment, on youtube maybe!

  9. Tonight was so so much better than last night, the guys better be watching their backs. I’m with you, I told Don, can you imagine she’s been working in a bank all this time, with THAT voice. Man alive was she great. Great review on your part too. ooxox

  10. Hey Boomama,
No bigger fan than me when it comes to Idol. You are right on with the comments. LaKisha will win this contest and deserving as well. What a magnificent voice!!! Melinda was my first choice til I heard LaKisha but they are def the top 2 in my book. Jordan was great as well but her voice is not as powerful as LaKisha. I so skipped choir practice for this tonight. Man I hope America votes talent over cutesy! I would link to my blog but I cant do all the techy stuff so Ill leave my 2 cents here.

  11. I love Melinda Doolittle, but my word, LaKisha Jones has it. I bet she’s been singing in the choir at some Baptist church and her voice has people flooding the aisles every Sunday repenting of their sins.

  12. Wasn’t that just amazing tonight?!They definitely raised the bar. And it was funny because I thought those first few were good/sweet and then once I heard Jordin, Melinda, & LaKisha, I thought…. oh there’s the difference. All the girls are just gorgeous though. Some of them could get into modeling or acting if the whole Idol thing doesn’t work for them.

  13. Well, it just ended here on the west coast and my favorite is…Lakisha, hands down. AND she sang one of my most favorite songs (Ashleigh and I are *really* into a certain soundtrack right now). I also liked Sabrina, Melinda and Jordin in that order. Poor Antonella…yikes! : (

  14. You know BooMama sometimes it feels like we share a brain which makes me scared for you. I was thinking the exact same things while I was watching tonight.

I should be rooting for Stephanie because she is from Savannah. That’s where I’m from and my husband and I just moved from there but,um did you hear Melinda sing?

Melinda is from Brentwood which is right up the street from where we moved to and I was going to use that as justification to totally root for her but then um, did you hear Lakisha sing? Plus I am a total sucker for a single mom story. I’m so torn now!

All I was thinking during Nicole’s performance was yikes! My husband and I both were trying to figure out what the heck she was saying the whole time. Stay together, baby. Yep, that’s all we got out of the whole thing.

Oh and I did not get to comment on the boys but yeah, Chris all the way. I LOVE him. No really, LOVE him. Nothing would make me happier than to see him and Lakisha in the final two!

  15. My post last night about it was short and sweet. I had two names to write about – Melinda and Lakisha. They rock!
Last night put the boys to shame, but I still love Blake.
A great writer once said, “talent knows talent” – let’s hope everyone does!

  16. little liz says:

Hiya, S. Merritt suggested this cute user name for me to differentiate me from the others.
This is my first year to watch AI, and I am loving it! I went to bed happy last night after hearing Lakisha and Melinda. It will be hard for me to pick between them. Nicole’s performance made my blood pressure rise – I felt very nervous during the whole song – like I was watching a bad “I Love Lucy” episode where I felt anxious for Lucy and Ethel and their crazy antics. Somehow I don’t think singing is supposed to cause its audience anxiety!
Can’t wait to see you tomorrow.

  17. I agree on your best choices. When you get a chance, check out their profiles they filled out on the AI site. Love their answers- :>)
I am rooting for Melinda and Lakisha all the way.

  18. Antonella has got to go-
I have never liked her- and her hyper friend in the beginning bugged me – Why did they let Antonella continue? She is bound to know that she can’t sing compared to the other girls-
In the end this Idol boils down to Lakisha and Melinda- Those girls have real talent!

  19. My suggestion is that we shuck this whole competition, cut to the chase & go ahead & form the ULTIMATE diva super group! Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin, Stephanie and Sabrina. They could take their act on the road. They’d need matching dresses and synthetic wigs (a la Dreamgirls). They’d sell out stadiums. I’d buy a ticket for sure!

  20. I only got to watch the first hour (my 3 year old can only handle so much AI), and I am so with you on the comments up through Jordin – you nailed them. And Jordin … totally rocked.

  21. Fun! Fun! Thanks for adding Mr. Linky. I’ve been dying to get over here and read your synopsis, but I wanted to write mine before I read anyone else’s. Okay, going to check out yours and the others in the Mr. Linky.

I totally agree with your picks. Although I selected Leslie to go. Although Alaina could easily go too. I so want her hair, though (Alaina’s).

And I’m sorry for doing 2 Mr. Linky’s. I couldn’t figure out how to delete my first one (the one with Hair Bow Storage after it). Mr. Linky fills in for me with the last one I posted, I guess.

  22. I’m with you on Antonella and Alaina leaving and the Miss America song.

Love the girl in the black dress and the boots and red hair– if I go buy a box of dye QUICK I can totally rock that look at my 40th b’day party this weekend!! Because I’m planning on looking only 38 or so.

  23. Ok, I’m gonna watch it tonight for the songs. But I’m fast fwding over all the “get to know you” video.

I will not get sucked in, I will not get sucked in, I will not get sucked in…..

  24. I try to blog quickly after the show so I wont be influenced by other blogs. I always look forward to reading your take BooMama!

My question for you and your readers, Is anyone voting? I cant say that I am yet but I will! Oh yes I will!

(This is the first time Ive ever done a MR. Linky!)

  25. Spoiler Alert: Do not go to this link if you don’t want to know POTENTIALLY accurate predictions (not guaranteed, of course). This site has been measuring busy signals on voting nights for the past couple of years. You’re going to be surprised by the rankings of some of the contestants:

    http://dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp

  26. Merritt & Boo,
I told my mom the EXACT same thing about little Haley: “Seems like we’re watching a pageant.” I think that means we might have watched too many pageants and too many reenactments in our lifetimes. :)

    Can’t wait to see y’all!

  27. You’ve got such totally good taste–well, especially since I totally agree with each and every comment you made…..-EVERY one, ya hear? Yes!!!! on the ones who could rock on, and Nooooooo on the ones who were vying for the pagentry…..

  28. Ok, so I didn’t get to watch the boys and from what I understand I sure didn’t miss much! But, oh yeah, I got to watch the girls. WOW!!! You are so right on with all your comments. I loved LaKisha, Melinda, Sabrina, and Jordin!!! They rocked it! I can not believe the talent oozing out of Jordin at 17 years old! Amazing. But, I have to say Miss LaKisha was my most favorite. Melinda was my favorite until LaKisha sang. I can’t wait to watch tonight!!!

  29. I agree that the girls totally rocked it! And I love how sweet you are about the singing, by just saying, “She is pretty” and leaving it at that. You’re a hoot!

  30. LOL this is my first MR Linky also I think. I am just not on board with the Melida thing ::ducks tomatoes:: Mmm dawg it just didnt do it for me LOL. Alaina I hope stays because I think she has more in her than last nights song. xoxo melzie

  31. I left my comment on the wrong entry – then I just thought of something -no one has mentioned the really pouty looks they showed on a few of the girls as they praised Melinda and Lakisha – not gonna win them any votes – its a good thing they’re pretty! Yikes.

  32. Hey to Musings of a Housewife (because for some reason I cannot comment on any typepad blogs) dont wait til next week to watch because its on tonight I am pretty sure! xoxo melzie

  33. Regarding Haley:
My husband made the same comment about the beauty pageant performance, as they replayed the performances briefly at the end, I observed that she has the voice of a Disney princess. It’s beautiful, but I don’t think it will get her far in this competition. Maybe someone at Disney was watching and they can give her a contract…
We think Amy is going home, and Antonella unless the teen crowd feels sorry for her and wants to give her another chance. I’d like to see Alaina get another chance myself.

  34. I agree totally with you so far, guys and girls… I’m wondering, is it just me, or is Simon dead on with his judging at this point? He tends to be (at times) unnecessarily mean during auditions, but when it gets to this point, he nails it. He articulated exactly what I was thinking last night after several of the performances. I’m rooting at this point for Blake, Chris (both of them) and definitely Lakisha. That girl can SING. And she was beautiful last night, very put-together. Hoping we won’t be disappointed tonight!!

  35. I’m just so glad somebody FINALLY said what my hubby and I have been thinking for 5 years…DON’T DO A BALLAD!!!!!

99% of the time, ballads are BORING. Thanks to Sabrina for finally saying it out loud.

I think it’s Sabrina and LaKisha to look out for.

  36. Ms. Dolittle did a whole lot. I love her. What a sweet, sweet smile.

    LaKisha is ‘da wo-man. AHMAZING!

I must address Paula’s hair. Now, Ms. Paula this is a plea from the millions of AI watchers…please don’t make that hair mistake again. “It just wasn’t the right choice for ya sweetie.”

  37. This is our first AI season and our family is having so much fun! My hubby thought all the guys should go home compared to the girls. We loved Melinda and then LaKisha blew us away! Why does everyone think Paula is so pretty?! Some nights she looks rough.

  38. LaKisha is AMAZING!!!! I so enjoyed her. I really hope she makes it to the end. What an American dream for a single mother. And a great performance on her daughter’s birthday!!

  39. I forgot to add. Did you see Simon after her performance. He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.

  40. I’m in agreement with almost everyone else. At least we know now the winner this year will be a girl. La Kisha is just amazing, but so was Melinda. I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite between them. What talents. And the 17 year old was really good, too.

  41. I.CANNOT.BELIEVE. Antonella didn’t go home! She murdered that song and is one of the least talented of the girls! Oh well…….there’s always next week!

  42. The results of the guys didn’t surprise me, but the girls sure did! I just knew Alaina & Antonella had to go home…..if people were voting strictly based on singing ability. Guess that didn’t happen!
