Because Nothing Says “Happy Birthday” Quite Like An Ear Infection

Last night Alex woke up crying around 11:30, and since I am such an unselfish soul I immediately asked my husband to please just go fetch the child and put him in the bed with us because Mama needs her sleep, okay?

But as it turned out the little man was actually a pretty sick little fella, and around 1 AM when he looked at me and said, “I feel so bad, Mama” with nary a hint of a capital letter or exclamation point, I knew that we were in for a mighty long night indeed, bless his sweet little heart.

So instead of heading to Mother’s Day Out today, the little man had to go to the doctor (not by himself or anything – granted, he is a big boy what with recently turning four and all, but D. and I have discussed it and we feel it’s probably wise to wait until he’s at least six before we hand him the keys to the car). He has a red-hot infection in his left year and a smaller one in his right, and so, for only the fourth time in his little life, he has to take antibiotics so he can get all better soon.

And yes, I absolutely paid that extra $2.99 at the pharmacy for them to add the bubble gum flavoring to his amoxicillin, because if you’ve ever tried to give a young’un the straight chalky white stuff, you know what deep and abiding peace it brings into your life, the kind of peace that makes you want to ram a moving vehicle straight into a brick wall.

So as a result of Alex being unexpectedly under-the-weather, we’re going to have a laid-back last night-o-fun with my sister-in-law and nephews. Alex is (finally) resting pretty comfortably, so Janie and I are about to head down the street and pick up some delicious sushi, maybe swing by Target and check out the adorable wedges that my good friend Big Mama spotlighted on her blog today (and while you’re there, please feel free to read the whole post and laugh your head off).

Now that I think about it, though, we should probably check out the shoes before we pick up the sushi since nothing really says “we’re so glad you came for a visit” like feeding your extended family members raw fish after it’s been sitting in a warm car in the Target parking lot. Though it would definitely be a gift-o-hospitality that keeps on giving.

Once we collect our sushi and sandals and come back here, I imagine we’ll have night number three of what has turned into a regular Wii-tacular. GOOD GRIEF the Wii is a fun product, and if not for the Wii we’d have never realized that Janie has a talent for bowling that has heretofore been undiscovered. In fact, D. and I have determined that given the manner with which Janie decimated her bowling opponents last night (specifically: her children), we will be purchasing her a satin jacket, a bowling bag, and sending her out to tour with the Ladies’ Professional Bowling League. Which I assume exisits.

And if not, it totally should.

  1. Don’t be too hard on yourself. My daughter came to me the other night. Poor thing had come down with the stomach flu in the middle of the night. Being the kind, unselfish, loving mother that I am, I told her to sleep on the floor. (She has a loft bed) Early the next morning I vaguely remembered the conversation and hoped I had just dreamed it. Nope, she had indeed gotten sick on her bed and had to scrounge up blankets and pillows to sleep with on the floor.
Even worse, I had just gotten over the same bug and she had waited on me hand and foot keeping me warm and hydrated and ensuring the dishes did not pile up or laundry overflow.

    Hope he feels better soon!

  2. I think that you should ask Big Mama if you can borrow her “Diamond Darlings” jacket and model your SIL’s bowling attire after that. Sassy indeed! Hope the Birthday Boy feels better soon.

  3. Poor little guy, hope that medicine works right quick.

  4. So sorry about the little guy’s ear infection. My son used to get them a lot and I remember how painful it was for him. He also had significant hearing loss in both ears from the infections. He had all the allergy tests and antigen shots but it didn’t cure him. I finally used the chewable vitamin C with rose hips, and raw honey my mother had suggested in the first place, and after a few weeks he was much improved, and after about a month he was well and his hearing was normal. He never had a problem with ear infections again.
Just thought I’d share, incase your son continues to have a problem with ear infections, you may want to try it.

  5. Aww…poor Alex. Sadly, my oldest had taken antibiotics about a million times by the time he turned four, and had actually grown to enjoy the taste of straight amoxicillin. I hope Alex feels better soon.

  6. Hmm… the two times Princess had amoxicillin it automatically came bubble gum flavored at no extra charge. In fact I had wanted to get a different flavor but was stuck with the bubble gum that she is not too fond of. Maybe I need to find a different pharmacy.

  7. Poor baby…and I feel bad for Alex, too…jk!
We don’t always catch it in time, and it is easy to be hard on ourselves for it…when I was pregnant with our third child, my oldest complained of a sore throat and had trouble talking…I felt blessed she was quiet and bought her some popsicles.
Turned out she had strep throat and had to be rushed to emergency, shot full of penicillin and iced down…so putting the little guy in bed with you so you could sleep….not so bad!!
Love you, Boomama…and little Boo too…

  8. I’m sorry that your little man is sick. I hope he is feeling better by now. I think that earaches and toothaches are about the most awful pains to experience. I hate to have either of them myself but can’t hardly stand it when one of my kids cry with one. I hope his bubble gum meds help in a hurry!

  9. My daughter is one of those exuberant types like Alex, and I always know she’s really sick when the exuberance is gone. Hope he is back to his EXCLAMATION! POINTS! SOON!

  10. Poor thing!!! Sorry he isn’t feeling well. Zach missed MDO last Friday due to throwing up on Thursday night, and being the kind mom I am, I felt the need to not contaminate the other children with whatever bug he had.

I’m so jealous of the Sushi thing!!! It’s my fave! I love me some Thai Emerald!!! Well, Surin is my fave but it is all the way downtown!!!

    Have a good night!

  11. Hope your boy’s feeling much better soon.

  12. Poor little guy, I’m glad to hear you got him resting well last night. I was thinking of your little guy, because one of mine just turned 4, too, and I hadn’t realized until Alex’s birthday post that we shared 4-year-old-boys. Well, not shared, we each have our own. Shared the delights and challenges? But that’s getting wordy. Anyway, I pray he recovers his exclamation points soon. Maybe I’ll send you some of ours, since my son as an over-abundance. Many of them left over at the end of “Mom! Mom!! Mom!!! Mom!!!! Mommmmm!!!!!” which is, apparently, the quick-and-easy way to get my attention.

  13. Poor kid! Ear infections are so painful! We’re in the process of scheduling to have tubes put in our Little Man’s ears. At 15 months, the doctor hasn’t seen him without an infection or residual fluid in his ears since he was 4 months old… :(

  14. Phyllis R. says:

What a bummer on his birthday. I hope you had some snacks left over from the week-o-eating to make the medicine go down a little easier.

I know this sounds kinda nuts but I used to love when the pediatrician said “infection” (rather than the dread “virus”). It always meant antibiotics and 24 hours later it was all good! Hope he’s better.

  15. Aha! You are “MADE” Boomama! True Southerners don’t eat sushi…unless it’s fried. ;)

  16. One more point on Costco…Their amoxicillin comes already flavored with buble gum. A no extra cost. I found this out recently when baby girl had bad, bad cough.
Yes, indeed, I am the Costco evangelist. Just in case you’ve renig’d on your decision to jump into the Costco pool!
