I Took Some Lovely Pictures, But Unfortunately You Cannot See Them

Oh, I photographed the fried green tomato extravaganza like nobody’s business.

Sister even got into the act and gave it her best Vanna – ever-so-elegantly directing your attention to the tomatoes, the olive oil, the whathaveyou.

She did not, however, wear a bugle-beaded cocktail dress. Though that certainly would have added a certain festive air to the proceedings.

And Janie, God love her, donned her cutest apron and put all the ingredients in adorable color-coordinated bowls and fried those tomatoes to a lovely golden brown – even garnished them with a tasty sauce and a little goat cheese.

But alas, I cannot show you.

Because I can’t figure out how to crop my pictures on Janie’s computer.

However, I can give you this little tip.

Take 6 sweet potatoes, peel them, slice them like French fries, put them in a Ziploc bag, and then cover them with a mixture of 4 Tbs. canola oil, 4 Tbs. taco seasoning, and 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper.

Shake the Ziploc bag really good – then spread the potatoes on a couple of cookie sheets.

Bake at 425 for an hour – flipping the potatoes midway through.

DEEEEEE-licious.

And I’m off to bed now. With happy sweet potato / fried green tomato memories.

See y’all tomorrow.

Those pictures will keep till you get home to your computer. I’ll be waiting for the exciting tutorial.

Y’all have a good visit with your brother and family, and drive safely, y’hear?

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

  2. I’ve tried, and I mean really tried, but this girl from the west just can’t get over that fried green tomatoes are made from tomatoes that aren’t finished growin yet. Gak!

I’d never be a good southern girl. I just live vicariously through you.

  3. oh my how I LOVE me some fried green tomatoes. However, with my wonderful cooking skills (oh wait..insert sarcasm here), I’m not even going to try :( lol!

  4. Thank you for the sweet potato recipe. I am going to try that tomorrow. :-)

BTW, I tagged you. I hope you don’t mind.

  6. I have never eaten fried green tomatoes…

  7. I’m gonna have to try that sweet potato thing because that sounds really wonderful!! Yumm….

  8. I love how Southern recipes transform those humble veggies- a little batter here… A little frying there… Voila! What was an underripe tomato is now amazing! My mouth waters just reading about it all…

  9. You make “slice them like french fries” sound so easy. Bossy could try but she knows it will end in the Emergency Room.

  10. Thank you sooo much for the french fry recipe – I tried to do these from a taste memory last week,(had them at Poogan’s Porch in Charleston – southern enough??) and was really disappointed in the way they turned out. I am going to try your recipe this weekend!! Always enjoy reading your blog – you feel like a younger version of my family! CRAZY!!

  11. Fried Green Tomatoes…MMMMM! Yummy! My favorite!

  12. Were you going to go all Pioneer Woman on us? Her food blog is making me drool daily!! I can eat my weight in fried green tomatoes — I’m glad you don’t have pictures. I think it would be more than my stomach could handle!

  13. suzanne says:

I make my sweet taters the same, except I use fajita seasoning on them, with a touch of olive oil…..they are good! And I envy your Fried Tomato/Sweet Potato extravaganza with the girls! How fun!

  14. Last summer I planted a whole bunch of tomato plants. Unfortunately, it was the worst year for tomato growing in the history of Connecticut. It rained, but not good rain like tomatoes need, because it was also sort of cold-ish. So, the tomatoes would stay green forever, and then turn into red moldy mush overnight.

So, I fried me up several batches of fried green tomatoes.

  15. My Aunt always made Fried Green Tomatoes. I love ’em! They are great on a sandwich with toasted bread, bacon and mayo! Yum! I also love the effort everyone made to look nice for the pictures. Just the thought of everyone dressing up and posing for pics is very funny!

    Blessings,
    Georgia Mom

  16. And where, exactly would someone living north of the Mason-Dixon Line get their hands on green tomatoes?

    Do they really exist? :0)

Thanks for making my tummy grumble.

  17. I don’t think I have ever eaten fried green tomatoes, but might have to try it. We have tomatoes growing in our backyard but as soon as they start to turn slightly orange our DOG steals them and eats them. Our DOG! So we may have to resort to eating them green. Thanks for reminding me that people do that. : )

  18. I just saw a recipe the other day that made a BLT out of fried green tomatoes. And if I can add bacon to anything fried? Sign me up.

I hope to one day see Sister do her Vanna impersonation in person.

  19. Great sweet potato recipe! I did something similar with zucchini the other day. Seeing as we have zucchinis coming out our ears, we needed a new way to fix them, and the zucchini fries were quite tasty!

Question: When you make fried green tomatoes, do you use underripe tomatoes, or is there a special green variety you use? I was born a Yankee, but married a Southerner and live in the South. I am slowly, but surely, learning these things!

  20. i’m a BIG fan of FGTs! looking forward to the pics.

  21. Must. See. Pictures. I love the regional differences in the USA. It seems like the South has held strong all these years one tomato at a time.

  22. Now you have me craving fried green tomatoes… thanks a lot…LOL!

  23. I have actually eaten fried green tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, Georgia thank you very much! Quite the feat for a gal from (then) Iowa! :) Yummy!

  24. donetta says:

I love sweet potatoes. This one is a must try! Thanks for the tip slip.

  25. jesslev says:

I made the squash supreme and cranberry jello congealed salad for lunch tomorrow- my parents are coming over to eat after church- Mother is bringing pork chops and butterbeans!!! I can’t wait- I’ll be daydreaming about it all during church in the morning!

  26. Sweet mercy, am I glad I read this post! (And the five underneath, too, of course :) )

I’ve been making oven fries with regular potatoes, olive oil, and coarse kosher salt, just like you make your sweet potatoes. But my husband is going to want to hug you after I make your sweet potato version. They sound wonderful! Happy weekend :)

  27. Perfect timing! When you are able to get the tutorial up I should have a zillion green tomatoes dripping off those plants in my garden!

  28. Yummmmmm-mmmy! :)

  29. Oh.My.Word! I’m drooling!

    Hugs!
    Kat

  30. I must confess, I’ve never tried fried green tomatoes. Your recipe sounds simple enough. Thanks for sharing!

  31. I love sweet potatoes…without the pepper cooked this way. YUM! But I want to see the pics (whine) they sound so cute.

  32. Oh, yummmmmy! I love both fried green tomatoes & oven sweet potatoes. I make regular & sweet potatoes this way, but the taco seasoning sounds like a fun new twist that I might have to try. I had a fried green tomatoe sandwich the other day…it was GOOD!

  33. Yummo!! Sounds wonderful.

I love fried green tomatoes. The sweet potatoes sound delicious. I’m going to fix those this week.

    Thanks for sharing!

  34. Ohmygosh — we make sweet potato fries all the time … I couldn’t live without them! These are just ever so fancy and delicious sounding … I’ll have to try them soon!
