Because Random Makes Labor Day That Much More Fun

I always like to think of Labor Day as the unofficial beginning of fall, mainly because it makes me feel better to think that we have finally managed to put the humid unpleasantness of summer behind us.

Plus, you know, we’re in an “–er” month now and football season has started.

So: TOTALLY FALL.

But as a result of my fall-esque feelings, I am fighting the urge to go to Home Depot and buy bales of hay and eleventy jillion pots of mums.

And if not for the knowledge that said mums would wither to a decisive crisp in our ongoing high-80’s temperatures, I absolutely would.

*****

I’m happy to report that, after ten months in this house, I finally managed to hang some pictures and stuff on the long wall in our bedroom.

However, the walls in the guest room are still woefully bare.

But the good news is that, at my current staggering rate of decorating productivity, I should have the guest room finished by Easter.

*****

After several viewings of “High School Musical 2,” I have reached a very personal decision that I would like to share with you, oh internets.

I am going to try to commit the dance routine with basketballs to memory.

It will be a challenge since I am only one person and it is in fact a group number.

But those of you who have experience in the performing arts know that when Dance beckons, you really have no choice but to follow her.

*****

Speaking of dance, Alex has been perfecting some wicked cool moves in the tradition of Elaine Benes.

He has two favorite boogie-down songs: “Beautiful You” (the little man calls it “The Ocean Song”) by Monk & Neagle and “Let The Music Get Down In Your Soul” by Marc Broussard.

And he seems to express himself best when he squints his eyes, places both hands in the thumbs-up position, and then kicks his legs repeatedly.

It is a thing of beauty.

So beautiful, in fact, that there are times when his daddy and I have to put our hands over our respective mouths, stifle a laugh, and turn away.

  1. I totally agree. I live in Southern Florida and it’s beyone hot..it’s about 200 degrees with the humidity index around 150%. Geez. I have made to trips to the Dollar Tree and purchased all kinds of fall decorations. I now have a cornicopia filled with fall flowers/leaves and a basket of pumpkins and gords around my TV. I feel that September 1st is the start of the FALL season. If we’re lucky we will get down to about 85% in October, but it’s autum in my house! Happy Labor Day and many blessings to you and your family.

  2. opps..85 degrees

  3. Hey, Sophie, it actually IS cooler today. I went out early for a nice neighborhood walk & it was really pretty pleasant, for a change.

Football is going to be on at our house a bunch too…my hubby loves it. Me..not so much, but I’ll root for AL anyway.

I’m going to Nashville this weekend too, so I’ll look for you! LOL

  4. Since he comes from a long lineage of people who love to cut a rug, methinks a dance lesson from Aunt Sister is in order. :)

  5. Gimme a beat :-)

  6. Since it is an -er month and all, and football season is upon us .. I think you should change the basketball to a football.

The kids deleted HS2 off the DVR (scandalous) so I’m without a fix til this Saturday. God Help Me. But, I totally have that clock move down.

As for the rest, I think Alex could dance me under the table.

  7. If you get that dance down, promise me you’ll youtube it for us. It is the natural next move from podcasts.

At our VBS this year, we did the moves from We’re All in This Together from HSM1. (It tied in, really it did, and had spiritual application.) It was a huge hit and it made me feel cool and hip and about 18 years younger.

It will probably take only one more mention from you of Monk and Neagle and I’ll buy the CD.

  8. Ah, but can he do the chicken dance?

I’m looking forward to fall temperatures, if only to justify carrying a wrap to work. After 4 hours in my refrigerated office, 90 degrees feels comfortable. I take my lunch break outside to thaw myself.

    Happy Labor Day!

  9. Let me make you feel better about your decorating. We’ve lived in this house for 4.5 years. There is NOTHING, NADA, ZIPPO hanging on my bedroom wall. And not because I enjoy the simple look of bare walls. Just can’t decide what I want up there. And with my husband, once it’s up it’s there until Jesus comes back. So, I leave it bare. I wonder how Jesus will feel about it when he returns. = )

  10. I’m glad to hear it’s fall somewhere! Maybe it will get here eventually. It’s been over 105 degrees for about a week here in California. (Ok, not at night. That’s just the high.) Ugh.

  11. Sweet Alex sounds like he dances like Elaine on Seinfeld…thumbs and all!
Love the Fall reference…I was weak and bought two, only two, mums at walmart that are now sweltering in my garage because it is too stinkin hot to plant them. (sigh)

  12. Come September I always think of the “You’ve Got Mail” part where they e-talk about a bunch of freshly-sharpened pencils and scotch tape.

And me? I couldn’t resist some fall clothes to go along with the pencils and tape.

But not that we’ll be wearing long sleeves anytime real soon.

  13. I know what you mean with living in Texas. I grew up in the north and even though its still in the 80’s I swear fall is right around the corner. By the way tag your it! I just love your blog and come check out my blog to find out whats going on.

  14. I am with you… went to Yankee Candle today and bought oodles of tarts in pumpkin and apple cider scents… the house smells like fall, even if I had to crank the a.c. down to 68 to feel it:-)

We kicked off the ‘ber/brrr months in our house with a chili cookout before the game on Friday- just denied that it was 100 dgrees and my poor guests were sweating themselves silly. I think they were just thankful I didn’t insist on a bonfire!

  15. September always makes me want to go through Jophies clothes, swap them around and see what fits for this year but Ugh its 92 still at 6:30 p.m…
Phew hot and humid! I can’t wait till its a bit cooler and less humid.

The basketball dance scene and you hmmm…
Oh yea thats gonna be a sight to behold! hehe

  16. I heard there is an HSM2 special this next weekend in which they will be teaching us the dance moves.

Because I’m determined to learn “Work This Out”.

  17. Just this morning my 5year old said, “Mom! Want to see some new dance moves?” And I automatically thought of Elaine. Because he’s THAT good.

  18. Speaking of bales of hay and lots of mums, my mother and I were at Walmart this afternoon and I had to haul several pots of yellow, red and orange ones. It makes me very anxious for Halloween!

  19. Yes..ma’am…its all about the dancing in HSM2….because I am so good now at HSM1 that I know I can figure out this new one.
When a commercial, promotion, behind the scenes, anything comes on the tv….we all get serious bc its time to bustamove!

    We’re so corny.

  20. BooMama, I, too, am ready to set up a fall theme in my house. It seems like the right thing to do, lol. I always think the same thing too … football starts, they start harvesting here and the temp is dropping a little…so I start thinking about pumpkins, sweaters, weenie roasts and marshmallow roasts…yum! And then before long, it will be time to make chili and soups… One of my favorite times of year…

Sister, Thanks for your sweet comments on my blog!! It was so good to hear from you!! Hope you are doing well… Are YOU ready for fall? I am ready for some cooler weather for sure. And the things I mentioned above. It will be Princess Emmy’s first Christmas.. or Munchkin as I like to call her… That is exciting for me this year!! :) I guess we’d better be ready, because it is on it’s way!! Hope you have had a good weekend… Hope to “talk” to you soon… Cecil

  21. Yes, Alex may have dance talent the likes of which we northerners have never seen, but can he:
    1. Wear cool shades
    2. Do said leg-kicking
    3. Squint his eyes
    AND
    4. Pump both arms in the air with his fists tightly closed?

If not, then I am afraid my Cinderella has him beat. And I am willing to post video footage to prove it.

  22. Random is good! FALL is better! I’m in NC and I am hating the combination of flies and mosquito’s! AHHHHHH!

I just read your about me section…you must be kin! (HINT:Push Jesus up to the top!!)

  23. Oh it sounds like Alex has learned how to dance from my oldest son!!
I just watch in horror and humor all at the same time :)
    See you in 4 days!
    Kim

  24. Oh, the sights and sounds of fall..and football is the greatest of them all isn’t it??!!! Can’t wait to get out my 10 boxes of fall decorations…teehee. The other day, my 4 yr old asked me, “Momma, when’s it gonna be pumpkin time?” And right after that she asked, “When’s it gonna be gig’em time?” (aggie football season) My heart melted! I done trained her up REAL good!

  25. I, too, have a tendency to procrastinate on things for a few months. I found your blog several months ago and have been a daily lurker since. Finally, this weekend my husband helped me set up a blog of my own! You and some of your blogging friends have been my inspiration!! Thanks for the laughs and the honesty!

  26. I think I know all the dances and songs by heart already…LOL..

I bet the little one is very COOL to watch!

    God bless,
    Sallie

  27. Oh my goodness…Elaine Benes…was that whole scene not just stinkin’ hilarious?!?

  28. A bit off topic but I had to write and let you know how much the little “verse of the day” has been blessing me. I have been struggling with some stuff lately and the past week or so when I’ve come here the verse was like God speaking to exactly what I had been thinking about. Then reading your blog brought a smile to my face and the combination did me a world of good! So thanks…

  29. I do love that Ocean Song. :)

    ~Leslie

  30. Been gone for the weekend, so had to come by and catch up. You are always sure to put a smile on my face!

I had never thought of the ” er months”…how funny!

HSM2….well, what can I say. My daughter has the opening number dance down. “What Time is It”….we get to be blessed with her performance daily! As a matter of fact I think I hear her doing it now in the kitchen. Better go make sure she finishes getting ready for school and doesn’t get lost in Lava Springs!!

  31. Can the dance routine be your first ever video cast?

  32. Is it just me, or am I the only one bothered by Zac Efron. He just kind of looks weird — like he had major plastic surgery. Am I middle-aged, or what?

  33. Dreaming of Fall right along side you.

  34. If you can get that Basketball Dance Routine down you totally have to post a video!!! LOL

  35. I’m almost tempted to be embarrassed that my wife Cindy and I know the dance moves the HSM better than our kids.
We are just SO cool. Too bad our kids don’t recognize cool when it’s staring them in the face. Seriously, we’re cool right?

  36. Labor Day is the fall kickoff to me, too! Even if I am in Mississippi where it still feels like full on summer.

This weekend I was actually able to (gasp) turn off the A/C. For about half an hour. That was enough to get thinking about pumpkins on the front porch and sweet potatoes baking.

Plus Friday night? I could hear the marching band at the high school football game! Awesome!

  37. B,

All I know is “I don’t dance”, but I’m impressed you do.

If you get the B-ball down, you could have an interactive podcast where you teach it to the rest of us.

(And I love some HSM, but the vocals and lip-syncing were off in this movie.) Hopefully HSM3 will be way better.

(it’s sad that I’m 28 and commenting on this, huh?)
