American Idol – Top 9 (Again)

I see that Casey is wearing his hair in a ponytail tonight.

The evening feels full of promise and possibilities.

Crystal Bowersox – “Saved” – Every time I hear Crystal sing, I can’t help but think that she’s doing exactly what she was put on this earth to do. And tonight’s performance? Oh my word. I LOVED IT SO MUCH. Great song choice, great delivery – and great things ahead for Ms. Bowersox.

Andrew Garcia – “Hound Dog” – I definitely think that the version he sang tonight was way better than what we saw from rehearsal with Adam Lambert. Once again, I liked what he did with the bridge (I always do), but I think he’s not a strong enough vocalist to just stand on stage and sing. A funky arrangement and an acoustic guitar go a long way in terms of making him someone who’s fun to watch.

Tim Urban – “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” – He sounded a little hesitant at the beginning of the song, but he got stronger as the song progressed. And besides the fact that I REALLY wanted to cut his hair, I actually liked this performance. He didn’t oversing and came across as utterly sincere – not to mention that the arrangement was absolutely beautiful.

Lee DeWyze – “A Little Less Conversation” – I say this every single year, but this is my all-time favorite Elvis song. And I ADORED Lee’s version of it. If I heard it on the radio, I’d turn up the volume. In fact, I just rewound the DVR and listened to it again. Right up my musical alley, it was. Definitely my favorite of the night (so far).

Aaron Kelly – “Blue Suede Shoes” – It was actually a lot better than I expected it to be. He has a great voice, and I much preferred tonight’s performance to hearing him sing a Touching Ballad. That being said, it was very traditional and expected…it was good – but it wasn’t special.

Siobhan Magnus – “Suspicious Minds” – She definitely stayed on pitch better than she did last week, and she cranked up the volume at the end of the song, she sounded great. Unfortunately, the first part of the song sort of reminded me of some sort of mellow Dionne Warwick album, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it didn’t exactly feel current.

Michael Lynche – “In The Ghetto” – Well. I thought that was just beautiful. Well done.

Katie Stevens – “Baby What Do You Want Me To Do” – For me Katie is the most improved singer in this whole competition. I feel like we’ve seen a little bit of a transformation in her performances over the last four or five weeks, and I like how she takes charge of the stage. I don’t know if this was the best song choice for her, but she did a good job with it.

Casey James – “Lawdie Miss Claudie” – At first I was totally into it. But it lost me a little bit about midway through – where it should have gotten funkier, it got slower and more predictable. That being said, Mr. James was totally in his comfort zone, and I think he’ll definitely be back next week.

I really enjoyed tonight’s show – it seems like the older songs always work better for Idol contestants. I also thought Adam Lambert gave them really good advice – that part was fun to watch.

Best of the night: Lee
Worst of the night: It was a strong night overall, but I think Andrew was the weakest.
Should go: Andrew, ???
Will go: Andrew, ???

What did y’all think?

  1. Don’t forget that 2 have to go tomorrow! Honestly hope it’s not Big Mike.

  2. Definitely Aaron. I have to turn the channel when he starts. Just.can’
    Andrew and Aaron. I think…

  3. I love Lee too! And Bowersocks ROCKS!

  4. I really liked Tim, Michael, and Casey. Casey is always my favorite!

  5. This is my 2nd week of not watching. I know it’s time to stop watching a show when I’d rather just read Sophie’s recap. :)

Now, I’m off to catch up on your last 4-5 posts (I’ve been… away). Who knows? Maybe I’ll leave cute comments on all of them. ;)

  6. “In the Ghetto” has always been my favorite Elvis song. I can still remember singing it with my 33 rpm record album.

Honestly? Michael’s version made me cry. I loved it!

  7. As much as I really, REALLY dislike Adam Lambert, he was an excellent coach.

  8. I pegged Big Mike and Crystal (yet again) as my favorites for the night. But yes, I did enjoys Lee’s performance too. As for the big losers this week…I think Andrew and Katie will be going home and Siobhan will round out the Bottom 3. Can’t wait to see the results!

    I love reading your comments!

  9. I agreed with everything you said. And Lee is my favorite. I hope he wins the whole thing.

As for who will go, you hit the nail on the head – Andrew. But I’m not sure who the other one will be…maybe Katie…maybe Siobhan…it will be interesting to see!

  10. Lee and Crystal were my faves. Again. I loved Mikes version of In the Ghetto and was glad he changed it up a bit because that song could have gone way wrong.

I love Katie too…not so much the first couple of weeks but now I really do like her a lot. And I do like Casey but tonite-eh

Tim surprised me…I’m glad he did the slow song because I was afraid with the Elvis theme there would be major cheesy. I really did like this.

My pick for two to go-Andrew and Siobhan…not a huge Aaron fan either but I would vote Andrew and Siobhan off the show. I don’t enjoy either of them at this point.

And I’d be kind happy for this to be the last Elvis night on AI…nothing against Elvis but his songs need a certain type and that type isn’t usually on AI

  11. Christine says:

I love Katie more and more.

I like Aaron less and less. I always forget that he is still on the show… thus, he is forgetable.

  12. I sure hope Siobhan and Andrew leave. They are the reason I wait until the show is already halfway through before I press “play” on the DVR. I just HAVE to fast-forward through them.

Loved Big Mike. And I thoroughly enjoyed Lee and Crystal. Didn’t care much for anyone else…

And ditto what Chelsea said! ;)

  13. Seriously, the minute Tim started singing I was like “THE HAIR IS OUT OF CONTROL!!”

  14. I’ve been a big Andrew fan since day one but year, I think Andrew’s gone as far as he can in this competition. He’s talented and original but he’s just up against some major soon-to-be stars like Crystal and Lee and Casey and Katie. He just doesn’t stand a chance.

  15. Loved reading the comments here and I love the way everyone summed up the night performances. My favorites are (in this order) Crystal, Lee, Casey, Katy and Mike. That rounds out my pick for the top five. My bottom three are Aaron, Andrew and Siobhan and I think Tim is doing so much better lately he really surprised me last night.

Tonight should be interesting. Do anyone think last week was staged or is it just me?

  16. I totally agree that Adam Lambert was a GREAT “mentor” – I was really impressed with him! You seriously never know who will stay or go because the tweenie-boppers are probably doing most of the voting, therefore you’ve got your Aaron & Tim & Katie staying strong – my prediction, not my preference. I love Crystal, Lee, Michael & Casey! Loved your recap, BooMama!

  17. I’ve been struggling to watch this year. Each week I end up leaving the room because none of the contestants are holding my interest.

  18. But the real question is…what was up with Ryan last night???? I thought he was acting really strange. Anyone else notice this?
