Super (Linky) Sunday

So we’re really not big on the NFL in our house. I think we love college football so much that it’s hard to make room in our hearts for professional football. Plus, my daddy was never much of a pro sports fan, so when I was growing up our family’s Sunday afternoons were reserved for stuff like reading and napping. The closest pro team to my hometown was in New Orleans, and none of us really enjoyed sitting in front of the TV and watching the Saints lose.

All that to say: the Super Bowl is usually the only pro game I watch all year. Most of the time I don’t even know who’s playing until the week before the game, and I typically decide who I’m going to cheer for based on whether any former Mississippi State players happen to be playing for one of the teams. Tonight, for instance, former MSU tight end Donald Lee was playing for Green Bay, so, you know, GO PACKERS.

See? It’s all very logical and scientific.

In addition to the Super Bowl goings-on, we’ve had a perfectly lovely Sunday (church, fun lunch with friends, book time with the little man, plenty-o-laughter), and I’ve tried to soak up the day because there’s a crazy-ish week ahead. I’ve got deadlines-a-plenty breathing down my neck, and in the interest of not making life miserable for the people who have to live with me, I’m going to try to tackle as much as I can at the beginning of this week so that I won’t be a walking basket of stress by week’s end.

This is the exact opposite of any productivity “strategy” I employed in college, by the way.

Anyway, I just wanted to share a few links with y’all, and then I’m going to get as much rest as I can before I have to wake up at dark-thirty tomorrow. THE FUN NEVER STOPS!

Lora Lynn’s post about Uganda is encouraging and heartbreaking and beautiful. LL and her husband flew to Uganda last week so that they could finalize the adoption of the newest member of their family. They have had some complications with the paperwork, and LL’s outlook in the midst of her (hopefully very short-term) disappointment makes her post all the more touching. You should read it.

– Kelli at Living in Grace finally has a living kidney donor – big, BIG news! After following her journey (I always feel like someone on “The Bachelor” when I use that word) for the last four years, I just couldn’t be happier for her and her family.

– I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Ree’s beef stew with mushrooms is so very, very tasty. I actually make it with beef stock instead of red wine (I believe my fundamental inability to appreciate red wine has been well-documented), and it’s just delicious. I also add lots of baby carrots. Because I’m CRAZY like that.

– Loved this post from Mary at Owlhaven about finding your own way as a mama. So good.

– I thought Chrysler’s Super Bowl commercial was really great. Unexpectedly poetic and beautifully shot.

– Finally, I am slightly obsessed with Drew & Ellie Holcombe’s new music video.

And when I say “slightly,” I mean I have watched it about 42 times in the last 2 days.

Hope y’all have a great Monday!

  1. My personal favorite moment from the Super Bowl was the nifty commercial featuring fellow Texan and Aggie, Jack Ingram at Gruene Hall. A real pleasure for the eyes and ears.
    Have a great Monday yourself!

  2. i have a qustion for ya…do you know of any blogs written by a pastor’s wife? more specifically, any written as in what it’s like to BE a PW? my own first lady was wondering if i could direct her to any so she might see how to get started :)

  3. I wasn’t sure if I was biased in loving that commercial, since I’m from Michigan. Seems to be getting a lot of attention, so I guess it really is a good one! I’m all for funny (darth vadar kid anyone?), but I thought this was really moving. Maybe it stood out because it went the other direction.

  4. I’m so glad you liked that Chrysler commercial! I’m from the Detroit area so I loved it and I’m happy to see that its emotional power affected people from other parts of the country. Yay for the Motor City!

  5. I’m with you on who to root for in the superbowl. This time however it was whoever was playing the Steelers, cause I don’t really like them. However, I was a HUGE fan of Sam Elliott introducing the 2 teams. I don’t care how old Sam is, he is the walking cowboy personified, and I LOVE him. THanks for letting me share the love about Sam today. Have a good, if busy week. Please pray of Kate as well… http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mcraekate

  6. I don’t give a hoot about NFL football either but somehow found myself watching last night and here are the important things I took away from the “game.”

*It seems that TheBlack Eyed Peas perform everywhere and at anything and I wonder how this works with their schedule. Also, why are they not better when getting all this practice?

*Both coaches looked my age and that made me feel old because I feel like someone that is in charge of an NFL team should be older than I am. I am young. I am young. I am young.

*I like Eminem selling me cars. Nothing says street cred like Chrysler.

*I think Will I Am and the Steelers coach might be the same person. Maybe?

Seriously, that’s everything I got out of the game.

Most importantly though, now I want to go make that stew from Ree. Thanks for inspiring me! We were on our way to another night of scrambled eggs if I didn’t find something to ignite my inner cook.

Good luck with your busy week!

  7. Wonderful post as always. Ever since you posted Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors singing “Baby it’s Cold Outside”, this group has just touched my heart so much. There is such honesty in their music and performance. Thanks so much for sharing them :).

  8. oh, and I have watched “Baby it’s Cold Outside” at least 42 times myself :)

  9. Two things for you today….
    1. THANK YOU for the great recipe from Ree. Totally cooking that this very week.
    2. I would love to hear your take on the half time show, if you watched it.

  10. and you should totally have seen the Today Show interview with adorable little boy who played Darth Vadar in commercial you introduced to us pre Stupor Bowl (sarcastic comment but honest – we watched every second and screamed out loud at the players, coaches and Cameron Diaz!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4rcyVFs-3Y
what a back story – we’ll laugh we’ll cry and oh my goodness we’ll pray for Max!
Have a good week Miz Soph – it will all get done in God’s good timing.

  11. This is totally unrelated, but Martha (or her twin sister) was at my Belk store in Athens, GA on Saturday! I had to go shopping for my youngest daughter’s upcoming Valentine’s dress. So we are in the dress department at Belk. A girl who was about our age and and older lady we at the rack beside me. I kid you not, “momma” said, when looking at a dress that was on sale, “I just depends on how it’s made what size I wear. I could wear an 8, I could wear a 10, or I could even wear a 6. It all depends on how it’s made through here (pointing to her shoulders). At that point, I had to stop looking and start listening. Then, the daughter held up a multi-colored jacket and “momma” started naming off various and a sundry pants/skirts she would be able to wear the said jacket with! If I would have had your phone number, I would have called you! It made me laugh right out loud!

  12. Oh my gosh – I’m so glad I’m not the only one who appreciated that commercial. I was REALLY impressed with it! BTW – always love your links, you’ve led me to some great stuff online. Thanks!

  13. Six of our 7 kids were born in Wisconsin so even though we live in Texas, we have some very serious cheeseheads in the house. (Spell check doesn’t think cheeseheads should be one word, but spell check obviously doesn’t cheer for the Packers!) I’m just glad they won because it makes my family happy – plus it’s a great excuse to have an entire meal of all the unhealthy things I really shouldn’t be eating…chip dip, brownies, little sausages, etc, etc. Packers win – my waist line grows – it’s a win-win situation. Oh, wait, maybe not. :)

I’m curious, if 42 times in 2 days makes for a slight obsession – how do you know when it’s a really serious obsession?? :)

  14. went to iTunes – they are such a cute couple!
love all the “love” in the video…
thanks for sharing them with us, again!
    had to buy 3 songs:
    “Don’t Say Goodbye”
    “Fire & Dynamite”
    “A Million Miles Away”

  15. I really never know much about the Super Bowl until the week before. But we did have a great time with friends watching (or in my case, talking to the other ladies present about grandbabies) and eating wonderful food.

But the actual game…eh. I can take it or leave it. Don’t let my husband know, however.

  16. i made my boys play with fashion plates during half time. all the testosterone became too much for me to handle.

  17. You liked the M&M (Eminem)commercial – I say that to drive my teenagers crazy – I also say that some kids dress “Nemo”. I have a big stash for when the little man gets to be a teenager!
