An Assortment Of Thoughts About An Assortment Of Things

1. I’m surprised by how much I’m enjoying this season of Survivor. I wasn’t planning to like it because, well, Phillip Sheppard is no longer a contestant. I miss Phillip. I miss how he wanted to play a game and make some bold moves.

2. There is not a single new show on the fall TV schedule that has managed to hold my attention for more than one episode.

3. Needless to say, I am concerned about the state of my television goals.

4. Yesterday I worked the Hoop It Up booth at the fall festival. For the record, I do not feel that the Lord has gifted me in the area of working the Hoop It Up booth.

5. I’ll take Hoop It Up over the face painting booth, though. I worked the face painting booth two years ago, and it took me approximately seven and a half months to recover from the stress of it all.

6. I still occasionally experience face painting flashbacks.

7. Does anybody still get together with friends and play cards? We used to play cards with friends all the time, and I miss it.

8. I’m the most passive-aggressive spades player you’ve ever seen, by the way.

9. Seriously. I’ll grin and make lighthearted conversation, and I’ll be plotting how to TAKE YOU DOWN the entire time.

10. I also enjoy canasta.

11. I think it would be nice to see a resurgence of card-playing in the 21st century family. Let’s get on that, people.

12. I would appreciate your insight and commentary on these matters.

13. I like what you’re doing with your hair. It looks really good.

  1. Seriously, no fall shows holding your attention? Sophie! Check out Suburgatory on ABC on Wednesday nights. Hilarious and you totally know people like that! Also, Fashion Hunters on Bravo. It’s like Pawn Stars but with fashion! High end, stuff I know nothing about, fashion! But I love it! I also enjoy Up All Night with Will Arnett and Christina Applegate. Maybe it’s because I have an almost 2 year old and can relate. Although, Maya Rudolph is hilarious and an Oprah-esque talk show host.
Nope, we don’t get together and play cards. Bunco, yes. Watch awards shows and eat pigs in blanket and Rotel Dip, yes. Cards, not so much. Although, we do fill out ballots and put a dollar in the pot so the one with the most picks takes home a whopping $4 to $5!

  2. My parents used to always play cards with friends and I always said when I grew up I wanted to do the same thing. I suppose I’m well on my way to being a grown up now, so thanks for the reminder. I wonder how long it will take me to recruit some of my friends to play?!

  3. I’m in for the cards. I’m not passive-aggressive. I’m straight up aggressive. But in a jolly way. :)

  4. Talk about stressful. I do believe the one time my older sister tried to teach me Canasta may have been the sad beginning of a lack of self-confidence that plagues me to this day.
Was I too young to learn, or ARE THERE TEN MILLION RULES?

  5. New shows? I’m watching Revenge. I think that’s the only new one to catch my eye. I am too busy with my old favorites (CSI (original and NY), NCIS (both), Criminal Minds, Glee, The Mentalist, and Bones (OK, haven’t been busy with that one, since it doesn’t return til NOV 3!!).

I do not think the Lord has gifted me to work in any area of manning a fall festival booth. Maybe taking tickets or counting money.

TOTALLY miss playing cards with friends. Not so much of a spades player (I *stink* at strategy games) but used to love a game called “crying canasta” which has a resemblance to another card game that was a form of bridge, that one taught to us by an elder in the church we attended in Omaha. I’m always up for UNO, Skip-Bo, and other card games in that genre, though. I’m probably a little more of a board game person (Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Pictionary, etc.)

Come on up to Huntsville; I’ll play with you.

    Love your hair, too.

  6. Nancy Hamilton says:

Sweet Sophie !!! I’m with you on playing cards. It’s only by God’s sweet mercy that I passed my freshman year of college due to playing Spades with my suite mates EVERY.SINGLE. NIGHT. I’d love to play spades w/you! It takes one to know one. Love today’s post!

  7. Heather M. says:

I will totally crash your card party! (Rook is my favorite.) Reid and Caroline are on a Phase 10 kick and I feel ridiculously competitive considering they are 10 and 8. Saw A yesterday in the hall — he almost plowed NK down with a hug — hope all his fall festival dreams came true (he seemed pretty pumped).

  8. Just linked here from Kelly’s Korner…

Love, love, LOVE canasta and spades!!!!

  9. We still play cards with our friends. We haven’t played in several months because they had the nerve to have a baby :) We love to play Phase 10. It is a very long game and usually becomes longer because we get distracted trying to solve the worlds problems. There is nothing better than eating snacks, laughing and playing cards on a Friday night!

Oh and I totally agree that the “Fall Festival” is a great tool to show you your areas of ungiftedness. Last year I worked the game where they won a real fish. Me and the goldfish still have issues!

I leave for Uganda next week! I can’t believe it is already here.

  10. I read often but comment rarely. Today’s post made me smile.

Survivor – great! It’s so much better when the teams are evenly matched. For the record though I still miss there being 2 challenges per show. REdemption Island challenges just don’t cut it the way a good ‘ole reward challenge used to!

New tv? Trying to get into Last Man Standing but it’s taking work.

Here, here for the resurgance of card playing! Fun times for sure!!

  11. We’ve given up on Survivor as well. Not even Coach can hold our attention.

I’m holding out hope that “Once Upon a Time” on ABC is going to be a keeper. Until then, we’re sticking with “Modern Family” and “Parenthood”.

As for #13, so sweet of you to notice! I just found out yesterday that I’ve been using my bobby pins all wrong. Apparently, you’re supposed to put them in wavy side down. Who knew? Thanks to that little tip, I enjoyed some heavenly height today :)

  12. Wavy side down on the bobby pins? I learn so much in the comments!
Okay — tv? Not loving anything. Wanted to LOVE PanAm, but it’s just okay. I’m hanging in for the clothes and retro furniture.
Cards? Aww, I miss playing cards. Girl, I’m a wicked Rook player. Anyone even play Rook anymore? I grew up with parents who loved the game and played a lot.
And thanks on the hair — it’s a bit shorter and I hope that makes it sassier.

    • Mary…..my folks played Rook into the wee hours of the morning with another couple! We loved it cause they brought their kids and they totally forgot how late they were playing cards and how late us kids were staying up!!

  13. 2. I like X factor and am looking forward to the real competition to begin. I do not watch the other singing shows so it might be too much if I did but I don’t so I do. Simon is nice and LA is very knowledgeable. Paula and Nicole are pretty and helpful as well.

    7. My parents used to play dominos. That would be fun too!!

    13. Thank you so much! I just washed it so it smells nice too.

  14. Sometimes we play Uno. And go fish with sight words. Does that count? probably not, huh?

My grandma believed playing cards were of the devil, so we never really had them growing up. Before she died I taught her to play Solitaire using Dutch Blitz cards and my mom told me to never tell her that that was a “card game” because it would shock and horrify her.

I think you might mean someone else’s hair. Mine is looking kind of amazing today. And I don’t mean that in a good way.

  15. Sorry, but when I think of grown-ups (and I’m using the term “grown-ups” as a 33 year old adult) I flash back to my childhood with memories of my grandparents sitting around a card table in their living room playing Bridge with their friends…I’m not ready to be one of those grown-ups yet, so it’s going to take a seriously aggressive resurgance for me to get on board that train! As for TV…I definitely don’t have the same passion about tv shows that I have had in years past…but Up All Night on NBC may be one of the funniest shows on television…I’ve recommended it to friends but I’ve found you need to be a parent to find it truly hilarious. As a former LOST fan I have high hopes for Once Upon a Time on ABC…I think it comes out later this month.

  16. Oh, man, why is it that you always get a hair compliment the day BEFORE your next hair appointment? Just when you’re going to get it all chopped off, someone sweetly tells you she likes it. Oh, well, at least I had one good hair day this month…

How about a rousing game of Nertz? I survived college in Bolivar, MO by crushing unsuspecting freshmen while loving them “in Jesus’ name.” Was that a little passive-aggressive, you think?

As for TV, I’m kinda with you. I’ve only recently discovered The Big Bang Theory, so I’m enjoying that it’s now in syndication. But, honestly, if it doesn’t involve a ball in some form, it doesn’t get much play time here.

Try this the next time Fall Festival sign ups come around: Volunteer your husband. I always say, “Someone has to take the boys around to the booths; I guess I’ll do that while you sit here and man the Bouncy House.” He falls for it every year.

  17. We played progressive rummy with our neighbors all the time a few years ago. I really miss it because I’m a game kind of person. Lately we’re into the card game monopoly deal. Have you played it? It’s only $5 and a lot of fun. Give it a few rounds to figure out some stratagy and I bet you’ll like it. I think Alex might enjoy it too!

  18. I can’y believe you know how to play canasta!!! One of my favorite childhood memories is staying up late into the night with my cousins at my grandparents’ beach house playing canasta. My sweet little ditzy grandmother would make up the rules as we went along, so who knows if I even know the right way to play! I’ve never run across anyone else my age that knew how to play.

  19. Euchre or Rook?? Up and Down the River? We heart cards in this fam!!

    • I haven’t heard (or seen) anyone mention Euchre since I graduated from college! We always knew we had stayed up too late playing when everyone had to ask trump every single play. Good times!

  20. I love this! And YES GIRL, Survivor is AWESOME! Although, mini Hantz may need some therapy of some sort, the boy is all sorts of confused. Also, play Phase 10, it could change card playing for you forever?!

  21. YES to the card playing! I spent a lot of time playing Rook and Spades and Nertz during my college days. I also like the dice game Farkle…
No to finding any captivating fall TV shows. I do like The Singoff – does it count?

  22. Kid you not, we were saying the exact same thing about cards last night. We LOVE passive-aggressive card games. Spades? Yes, please. Canasta? Andrew loves it, I’m a bit rusty, but if there are snacks involved, YOU’RE ON.

  23. I love some cards! We’ve cut back on our playing slightly since our friends now have both a 3 year old and a 4 year old, but we LOVE some canasta. My strategy is to look completely bored and apathetic until I take THE WHOLE PILE! Then I occasionally gloat–just to keep it real.

As for fall TV, I can’t say I’ve committed to anything new either. I put Pan Am on a season pass but I’m now 2 episodes behind. I also enjoyed watching the first two episodes of Revenge on Video on Demand, but I haven’t watched since. I just hate to commit to something that might get cancelled in 3 weeks.

  24. We play dominoes about 4-5 times a year, trying to make that game comeback. I miss cards, too. And your hair looks fab.

  25. My mom and three of her best buds got together to play Bridge every week. It was so much fun for me because it meant unsupervised hours of play and mischief with my best friends (her best friends’ kids). I remember shenanigans and more shenanigans, lots of lip-synching, dancing and dress-up, and Barbie dolls.

  26. Laura @ Texas in Africa says:

Up All Night is really funny. I’ve been watching PanAm, but they may lose me if Christina Ricci’s talent isn’t put to better use. Other than that, nada.

I love game nights in general, whether it involvescards or not. So, yes, let’s do that more.

  27. I knew there was a reason i loved you! I love playing cards. I had to give up on Canasta though because the old ladies in my building got real scary about it. They sweetly pronounce that they don’t care if they win or lose then they kill you with steely eyes if you make a mistake. My phase 10 people are a lot less intense although Dora, who’s about 85 will hiss at you if you tick her off. We play for nickels except for Dora who won’t gamble because she’s a staunch Catholic. However she does swear like a sailor, is often hung over after her boyfriend “The Donald” has slept overnight and has the hots for a bishop. When she dies she’s not having a funeral but rather she’s “going to medical school to have my innards examined.” She says those students will get a real eyefull! Old ladies are great!

    • Not sure about her not gambling because she’s Catholic. I’m Catholic and our Ladies Group has been known to take a bus to the casino!

  28. Lisa Roussel says:

I’m in that zone between haircuts, where it’s recovered from the shock of the cutting and before the desperation of that day when it won’t do anything and you must get it cut immediately.
I would totally come to your card party and will bring the Boucan dip and crackers. But I have to tell you, play against me- I’m not a good partner. I see the win and crack under the pressure, usually taking my partner down with me.

  29. What a fun post! My extended family, on my Mom’s side, plays a card game called ONZE whenever there’s at least four or five of us together. We still talk about how we had to be a certain age to be taught the game and how Uncle Loran knew every card that had been played, and how Aunt Bebe could play the game, bake a cake, study her Sunday School lesson and talk on the phone ALL AT THE SAME TIME and still manage to beat us.

We are more into game nights these days and the current fave is The Game Of Things. It is hysterical.

Haven’t watched any new TV. Enjoying Survivor, but I too miss the two challenge days.

And thanks for noticing my hair. You are the second person today to comment. It’s past due for a good cutting, but since folks are commenting that it looks good like this I may just have to keep it longish.

And my Fall Festival giftedness is limited to donating candy for the festivities.

  30. I’ve been thinking about hosting a card party off and on for a while now. My grandparents used to host card parties all the time (and I have the glass candy dishes to prove it) and I’m just at the age where playing cards is the perfect sport for me.

This fall television lineup is the worst. THE WORST! I watch “The Middle” on Wednesdays and that. is. it. Chuck starts in a couple of weeks, which would be awesome if I could watch the previous season all quick-like but I’m not seeing that happen. And that is just grinding a gear in my television goal list.

  31. We weren’t really a card playing family, but oh did we enjoy our board games :) I definitely want to preserve that!

  32. Love the last comment. Especially as I’m sitting here trying to wake myself up and look presentable and get out the door in 5 minutes. And I’m still sitting here. Thanks for the laughs.

  33. Parenthood and Modern Family… I’m new to both shows and love them both.

  34. I am new to Parks and Recreation and LOVE it! I was thinking I needed to do something different with my hair so maybe not. :)

  35. Re: TV, currently I am enjoying The Middle, Parks and Rec, and The World Series.

Re: card games, I grew up in a family that loves games of any kind. Loved the times when my parents and aunts and uncles would get together for cards, because there were usually lots of good eats like Krispy Kreme donuts, and because I loved all the laughter. I also recall the late-night games of Canasta and Crazy 8’s on our annual family beach vacations. And many a high school study hall was spent playing Spades. Yes, I miss card games. A resurgence would be lovely, in my opinion.

  36. As for the new shows on this season, the only one that I’ve really enjoyed is PanAm. Have you tried it? If not, you may need to catch up on hulu, but I love that it is set in the 60’s and they travel worldwide. I love all of the outfits and getting a glimpse into that era.

As for card games. We used to play them a lot. Then all of our friends (and us) had kids and somehow our lives are too busy to ever play! I agree. I’d love to start that back up. I love me some spades. And I really love me some euchre. Please tell me you play euchre. (I know it’s a northern game, but you are missing out if you haven’t played.) It’s like spades but with half a deck…that and some other rules:) Is it weird that when i was in high school it was a senior privelage to play cards and we’d burn up the hearts, spades and euchre during study hall and lunch? I’m willing to bet kids aren’t burning to play cards during study hall anymore. times. they are a’changin.

  37. oh you game players!!! what is it with you people! always trying to convert and force and impose your tyranny on the rest of us non-gamers!!! ;)

i actually wrote a post a while back about how i hate playing games…and how it totally stresses game lovers out. y’all crack me up.

    http://liferearranged.com/2010/10/i-dont-play-games/

  38. CANASTA!!!

    Yes please.

  39. My family plays pitch: seriously! Nothing is more fun than an evening with my hubby and 2 adult children. I do miss the Fall Festival days, but I would NEVER do a face paint! How about the Cake Walk? ring toss?
Let’s gather all our friends and have a great big evening of games and snacks. Love those from Diptacular!
    Your hair is just darlin’!

  40. I seriously want to drop doing the dishes and laundry and fly down to see you for coffee and cards, right now! You crack me up!

  41. You gave up on Person of Interest? We’re hooked on that one. There’s so much backstory they haven’t told us yet, we’re (I mean the husband and me) intrigued.

I haven’t played cards in a long time, but my husband has taught our kids how to play Nertz, and they tear it up. I don’t play, because I don’t want to embarrass my dude when I beat him in front of the children. :)

  42. Oh, I am SOOOOO with you about the cards! I remember playing cards all of the time, and now I feel like nobody does. And if we lived closer, I would totally kick your tail at canasta. I try and make my husband play, but he just doesn’t love it like I do. Have you tried pinochle? It’s lots of fun, too.

  43. My mother used to tell my husband and I (who was my high school bf at the time) that if we didn’t learn how to play bridge we were never going to be socially acceptable! So we learned and not one of our peers knew how to play EVER! The memories of those Friday nights growing up with my folks and their bridge parties will linger forever!
When our kids were younger we played TONS of board games, never taught them bridge, so I guess maybe they aren’t socially acceptable?!?!!
I’m with you on the tv, nothing is pulling me in to watch but I keep trying Pan Am and I WANT to love Last Man Standing but it is an effort!

    • I’m trying to love Last Man Standing, too. It’s just, almost, but not quite, I don’t know….

  44. Thanks for the encouragement on the hair….I have been experiencing a major lack of confidence in it as of late. I mean…I have not had it cut since June and the grays that I plucked are all sticking out kinda hairy scary as they grow back…but you, I can always count on your to lift me up when I am feeling down:)
****all this is being said as I secretly plot against you in a nasty game of spades*****
    HA! I miss spades!

  45. Nothing new on fall TV has grabbed my attention, either. Have you been watching The Office? If you’ve given up on it, you might want to go back–Andy has had a much more prominent role.

We don’t play games with other couples anymore, but we do family game night quite a bit. Now that the kiddos aren’t preschoolers anymore, they can actually play some more enjoyable games. Qwirkle is a current favorite.

  46. my husband and i played bridge with my in-laws for years (my father in law passed away a year ago) and we would love to find a bridge playing couple that is our age. we also like spades when no bridge players are available. the children love uno and we are looking forward to teaching them more card games as they are able to grasp the rules.

  47. I LOVE Canasta. Everyone calls it the old-lady game, but I started playing back in middle school. There’s even a commercial for a local bank that shows an elderly lady opening a new checking account and *winning* Aaron Rodgers (a good prize in Wisconsin). As the two walk out of the bank they talk about their love for Canasta.

  48. I miss cards. And dominoes! And friend, if you could see my hair you would disagree with yourself. But your comment is inspiration for me to actually fix it tomorrow. Instead of, you know, going outside in 40 degree temps with a wet head on my way to work.

  49. My parents always played cards when I was growing up. Now that I’m a grown up with kids of my own, no one plays cards anymore. It makes me sad. I think we need to start a Card Revolution!

  50. Oh how we love cards in our family. The kids and I love to play Gin (or Gin Rummy? Not sure which one we play, we just call it Gin). And there’s rarely a visit with my dad that Shanghi’s not involved. Or occasionally ‘I Doubt It’ (that’s our we-don’t-curse version of the same game that starts with a B).

One family reunion years ago, I believe there was an aunt, and possibly even a cousin, injured playing Spoons… those Virginia people take their spoons seriously. I’m kind of scared of that game now.

So glad other people play cards too still!

  51. BooMama, you just make me smile.
But TV never holds my attention unless Paula Deen is on. So my advice is switch to The Food Network!
My family has recently gone through a rummy revival speaking of card games. So much fun!

  52. Are you watching Up All Night? Maya Rudolph, Christina Applegate, Will Arnett? It’s DELIGHTFUL!

  53. “Psych” on the USA channel is my favorite. I’m also very into “The Sing Off”.

We still play canasta any chance we can get. We used to have dinner and canasta nights with our best firends, but we moved away from them. :(

The parents have tried to teach us bridge, but we aren’t learning well. So we make them play canasta instead.

At Women’s Retreat I am now part of the “42” tournament (that’s dominos, y’all – always ok for Baptists to play dominos). There are some wiley “plotting” little 70 and 80 year old ladies in that group. Devious!!

Haven’t done much spade-playing since college. But that was sure fun.

And thanks about the hair. I’m liking this length, but think I need to do something with the bangs.

  54. Royal Rummy!
You need a mat to play it. Ours shows a really old fashion price tag sticker from Target that reads $4.99!
No worries! You can buy them on eBay for about $1499.00.

It is a really fun, easy-to-learn, game for families and girlfriend get togethers.

  55. Ahhh… Spades. Many enjoyable hours spent playing this game before the children came along.

And I can’t BELIEVE you haven’t mentioned anything about Andy being chosen as the new office manager… So curious about your thoughts!

    • OK- any way to delete this? I didn’t see that this posted so I assumed I forgot to click “submit”. I posted again with an additional thought and then saw that this did in fact post. I’m a dork. Sorry.

  56. Number 13 totally made me laugh because I promise you…no less than a minute before I read it I was looking in the bathroom mirror at working thinking how crazy my hair looked and imagined how someone might say “whatcha doing differently to your hair?!?!”
You make me laugh many times per week! Thank you!

  57. We don’t play cards but used to play games at least once a month with friends. Rumikub was our favorite. They moved to New Orleans so we need to recruit some new game players. My mom plays Rook with several of her friends from church all the time. I never knew how competetive my mom was until listening to her discuss the games!

And thanks for the hair comment; I’m trying to grow it out and it is in that awkward stage right now.

  58. Ahhh… Spades. Many, many hours spent playing before the kiddos arrived!

I can’t BELIEVE you haven’t commented on the new season of Office. Thoughts, please!

And my favorite Survivor contestant of all times that I still miss every single season is Shane Powers. Oh, his nicotine withdrawal and use of a fake blackberry to text his son were glorious!

  59. I’m in for some card playing, dip-tacular fun!
How about hearts and eucre. Of course dirty Uno

  60. Love Euchre (obviously, I’m in the midwest) and playing this cool game called 26 that my grandma taught us when we were young’uns. As for TV, since I am rarely in charge of the remote, I know nothing of the network shows of which you speak. However, my testosterone-charged viewing companions found “Rocket City Rednecks” about some real aero-engineers and the fun things they build on the weekends. It is a positive HOOT. I laugh so hard. Totally my favorite show, and it is on National Geographic channel! Their mottos include, “Safety 3rd!” Love it. THanks for my hair comment – I went with the curled ends today, and i am having a sassy hair day in this rain!

  61. PARENTHOOD is the BEST show on TV.

  62. I am addicted to Storage Wars. It is like Hoarders, but with value and less critters. I’ve never been into cards, but give me a good game of Pass The Pigs or Upwords and I’m happy.

  63. Put this chicken on to cook this afternoon. Then settle in tonight and watch Person of Interest. All will be well. And thanks – it is a pretty good hair day!

    SLOW COOKER ZESTY CHICKEN

1 whole chicken (can remove skin, optional)
1/2 cup chicken broth or 1 chicken bouillon cube dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water
    1/3 cup soy sauce
    1/4 cup olive oil
    1/4 cup honey
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
    1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
    2 teaspoons lemon juice
    2 tablespoons minced garlic
Wash chicken and empty cavity. Remove skin if desired. Pat chicken dry and place breast down in slow cooker. In a bowl wisk together all the ingredients and pour over chicken. Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours. Spoon sauce over cooked chicken before serving.

  64. Years and years ago, we got into a nightly habit of playing Rook with our neighbors. Our houses were close together and our kitchen windows faced each other. Sandra and I would raise them and chit-chat until the dishes were done, and then one couple would walk the whole 15 steps to the other’s door. This went on for well over a year until they had the nerve to move to Dallas. I don’t think they even considered what a move would do to our nightly games…

I was just thinking the same thing about your hair. Cute as can be!

  65. I’m with you on the card playing! My friends and I have recently rediscovered Scrabble and dominoes and I’ve been reminded of my competitive streak :-)

  66. Nertz. My friends and I used to get together weekly to play it. It’s also called ‘Pounce’ in some southern states. Such a fun card game!

  67. I come from a long line of card-playing! We had great evenings during the long winters in ND playing Hearts, Pinochle, Canasta, and Cribbage.

Sadly, I married into a non-card-playing family. How could we not cover this pre-marital counseling???? Shouldn’t that be on “the form”?

  68. The only new show that has held my interest is 2 Broke Girls, and I made fun of the commercials for it all summer because I thought it looked stupid. But it has made me laugh quite a bit (although the humor can be a tad harsh). Loving The Middle again this year along with all of the NCIS/CSIs and Criminal Minds. I have never watched The Office but intend to start watching on DVD so was wondering what you think about how it’s doing without Steve C???

Cards? I am not competitive AT ALL unless it comes to a game of Spades. Then watch your back because YOU ARE GOING DOWN! :)

  69. In college some friends taught me how to play Hearts. I wasn’t really paying attention during one game, and ended up taking the Queen of Spades. They all said to me, “Oh…you didn’t want to do that…did you mean to do that? Did you remember about the Queen of Spades?” And I burst into tears. No kidding. I was Young and In Love, which meant I was also extremely sleep deprived because, did you know you can change how much time “every waking moment” is by just being awake MORE? So here I was. Laughing at myself for crying about a game of cards.

So I wonder if you’d mind terribly if we maybe played a little Banangrams or something instead.

  70. We have friends we try to play cards with about once a month and the game of choice is Hearts. We have played Spades but I’m not good with partners…which I’m sure is an entire therapy session!

The game is one of the highlights of the month!

  71. I absolutely LOVE to play cards. But, unfortunately I don’t find many who share my passion.

And thanks for noticing my hair. It’s amazing what washing it will do for it! :)

  72. Le Bad TV – Ringer. It’s so bad, it’s good. BTW, just got a cut. Glad you like it!

  73. 1. I say I’m planning to “make some bold moves” all the time, even though no one has a clue what I’m talking about. And I never saw the Survivor season it came from, I just thought it was so funny when you wrote about it!
    2. I heard our former Veronica Mars boyfriend, Jason Dohring, (he played Logan Echols) is on Ringer now. This doesn’t affect me really because we had our satellite disconnected in a fit of frugality. But my sister can’t accept it and still tells me TV related stuff hoping to lure me back to this century, hence my knowing random stuff about shows I’ve never seen.
    13. Thanks. I’ve been growing it out. Plus the Organix Moroccan Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner make it smoother and kind of shiny. :)
All numbers in between: I’ve never painted a face, unless you count my morning makeup routine. Also I don’t do card games because they often involve numbers. Math and I aren’t friends.

  74. Bunko is a fun card game that I love when I play with friends. Also Monopoly has a card game version which is sooooo fun. I know it’s not classic cards, but you can get a fast family game of monopoly whenever-it’s awesome.

As far as fall TV. I am LOVING Pan AM, Revenge (you can catch past episodes online) and it’s not new, but I like the show Happy Endings. Also trying to like Up All Night, since we are expecting and I thought it would be relate-able, but I’m not totally in love with it.

  75. I remember my parents going through a phase where they would play Hands Down with another couple all the time and never let us kids play. How fair is that? Rummy was the card game of choice though we’ve never had games with friends as adults.

Parenthood is hooking me this season. I’m not even watching DWTS this year. Nothing interests me. I would love Glee, but it’s just too…??

I need some new color on the hair, but thanks anyway.

  76. I’d really like to have some folks over for a game/card night. Hiyever, (a subtle segue to your post-o-yesterday) my sciatica won’t let me sit long enough to get through a board game, my carpal tunnel won’t let me hold a hand of cards, my hip joints are too stiff to allow me to stand up long enough to prepare the necessary dips and snacks, and between the statin drugs for the cholesterol and the thyroid drugs, my hair’s gotten so thin I can’t seem to muster enough fullness at the crown to do my Southern hostessing duties with the style to which my friends have become accustomed. What a world, what a world.

  77. Card playing alive and well at the convent.
And other games too. Our most recent favorite is Quirkle.

  78. I bet you’re not surprised to hear this….I LOVE PLAYING CARDS. Games of all kinds included. We used to have a group in Meridian get together every week or so for fun and games. Spades, hearts, canasta – all the usual suspects. And Mah Jongg. The real Mah Jongg with tiles, hands, chips, passing, etc. not this virtual tile-matching game that plagues the world wide web with every click.

Oh, I miss it although I may be a little too competitive – luckily my friends usually are right there with me. If you don’t play to win, why play at all? Unless of course, it’s for the chips, dips, snacks, and beverages.

Are there people out there today who actually do have game nights without food? Is this even possible?

  79. Revenge is fabulous. I wanted to dislike it, but it’s GREAT.

  80. I’m a Survivor fan too. But I haven’t watched last night’s episode yet – so don’t tell me.

  81. Before we had kids, my husband and I would play Euchre every Friday night with another couple. Our kids are now 13 and 11 and we’ve probably played Euchre 2 or 3 times in the past 13 years! Used to love playing cards – although my husband and I couldn’t be partners. The initial reason the couples split up was because I didn’t know how to play Euchre so I was paired with the husband of the other couple because he was the most experience Euchre player. So he was teaching me how to play. But then we never switched back to one couple against the other couple. I guess it was safer – instead of going home mad at your spouse due to their bone-headed move during the card game that cost you the win, it was better to be mad at someone else’s spouse whom you could leave behind! I also used to like playing Hearts but I can’t even remember how to play it anymore. Uno is good – even a few of the variations like Uno Spin and Uno Attack are pretty fun.

The only new show I’ve watched is Tim Allen’s new show. I want to like it, but I’m afraid it’s just not as funny as Home Improvement. But I won’t give up on it yet.

  82. Besides the regular-deck ones, a company called Looney Labs puts out a bunch of fun card games (and also a couple of inappropriate ones, but those are easily avoided). Probably the most popular is Fluxx (just the original version), and my friends and I played it sometimes in college. Right now one of my college-age friends is into a crazy card game called Pounce – a simplified, multiplayer version of Canfield Solitaire, basically. Uses a regular deck, though you need one per player.

    • And I just got my hair cut a couple of days ago, so I’m glad you like it!

      • Also, not to be Perpetual Postscripter, but Looney Labs apparently discontinued the game they had that wasn’t kid-friendly – woo! (Well, the Monty Python one gets a little questionable, but you wouldn’t play that with a kid anyway.)

  83. I love playing cards but never do. As with anything that can be remotely considered a competition, I am extremely competitive in cards. I DO NOT LIKE TO LOSE PERIOD. But, I am not a sore loser. I may not be happy that I lost but I won’t pout or whine over it. I’ll just keep it all bottled up inside. Isn’t that healthy? It’s what I do best. Keep everything bottled up so that in turn I can cause myself to have back spasms. Sorry, I got a little carried away here. What were we talking about?

  84. I love to play cards! I grew up playing canasta!! Those are some of my favorite memories with my grandmother that I adored. The family would play – cousins and all! I miss it!

  85. I have a friend who always has UNO in her purse. And she’s been known to play UNO while waiting for her food at restaurants. I would like to start doing that and think the world would be a better place if we all played UNO (or spades). Ever played 10,000? It’s a dice game and IT. IS. A. HOOT. Also, since I’ve brought up dice (that’s how I roll), LRC is another fun one. (Don’t confuse it with CLR…that’s on a different isle and is used for tubs and toilets).

  86. I LOVE Survivor. I think Brandon Hantz definitely needs some intense therapy.

    Face painting is the worst.

Thanks for the hair compliment. Got it cut today.

  87. Thanks for #13, I was worried I had gone too dark. You know. To cover all the premature gray!

  88. Amy Reyes says:

    You.crack.me.up.

  89. Please tell me you are watching “Parenthood”. BEST.SHOW.ON.TELEVSION!

  90. We’re loving Unforgettable and Person of Interest along with previous favorites The Middle, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory and Top Chef Just Desserts.

  91. Oh, Boomama, I am a faithful reader,a wee bit nervous about the commentin’. But you CANNOT give up on TV goals. Priorities, my dear, priorities. With your TV health in mind, I put in my recommendations for Up All Night and Suburgatory. Very, very funny. A person cannot have too much funny. Never give up, never give up.

  92. It may not surprise you to know that our family is a card playing family. We start ’em young with go fish and move to more competitive games. You learn a lot about a person from a card game. I was shocked when I played SPOONS with my neighbor ( a meek mild-mannered family man). and felt like i needed to put on some elbow pads and a helmet to go in for a spoon. If we have a lot of people we play NERTZ or BASEBALL RUMMY. We also play MONOPOLY ( which I think should be required in pre-marital counseling). I’m a shopper and buy property willy-nilly. My hubbs is a planner and won’t buy things if he is planning for his future around the board. Our most recent quickie game is BANAGRAMS- it stays out on our coffee table and is good for any age (so is APPLES TO APPLES)

  93. You MUST MUST MUST watch Revenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  94. I started a Bunko group of 12 women once a month. We’ve had our 2nd game and we have so much fun! We have food themes and everyone brings a dish. We’ve had dip night and salad night. Next night will be finger food night. Can’t wait for soup night when it gets colder. We also rotate houses so you only have to host once a year. It’s a blast!
I was hunger for women interaction and was missing game playing days! I suggest it to any woman who is in the same boat. :)

  95. Oh man, I used to love spades! Not sure if I could still play…it’s been a while. We like Uno too and our youth taught me a new one at camp…I have no idea how to spell it, but they pronounce it “twah” (I’d like to get fancy and assume it’s “trois” but anyway, you have a partner and a secret signal and it is hilarious fun!) We do still enjoy board games – the new Trivial Pursuit is fun (it includes wagers and you can actually buy a piece of pie if you absolutely cannot come up with an answer in geography, for example).
And I like your hair, too!

  96. What did you think of the recent immunity challenge involving the pigs on the spit. Most. disgusting. challenge. ever!!!

Agree with you on the new TV season. There were several I was interested in watching and have not followed any of them. Yet.

I am a big card player, and get together with my mother and cousin once a month to play cards. Yesterday I had lunch with old friends and we decided that after the first of the year we are going to start playing cards too (it means an 80 mile drive for me, one way, but I’m really looking forward to it!)

  97. My parents, hubby & I love to play Euchre when we’re together…gals vs. guys of course. Great card game. And growing up my parents played Rook with my grandparents; I always enjoyed filling in. Used to play continental gin at Christmas…lots of fun too. Great memories!

  98. BooMama! A great card game… Skipbo.
The little man can play too–but it’s fun for everyone!!

  99. Been a while since I have been here. My daughter suggested it and I thoroughly enjoyed it before, and enjoying it again and getting some good chuckles. Thanks for that!
Love to play cards, and with the invention of the internet…seems we have gotten away from eyeball to eyeball contact and holding cards in our hands, or touching the tiles on our scrabble rack. My husband and I play Spite and Malice (there’s another off colored name for it that I won’t mention, but one that he and i share! :) It’s fun. It’s easy and it’s a cut throat solitare game! You would enjoy it.
I thought I loved Parenthood but this week they were so busy trying to scream and talk over each other, it was not enjoyable to me.
We are NCIS and NCIS LA groupies. Love all the cast on both of them, especially NCIS. Mark Harmon is a cutey…well, they are all cuties.
I hope you have a great weekend. And again, thanks for making me laugh and smile. You are some kinda character! :)

  100. When we get together with my husbands parents or his entire family, we always play a card game called Zion check. My 9 year old son and I play Phase 10 very frequently. It’s one of our favorite things to do in the morning before he leaves for school. He has almost missed the bus because we are so into our game that we lose track of time. :)
