Carbs Are Dead To Me*

Well, we had a lovely Thanksgiving – lots of family, lots of food, lots of laughs, and no shortage of shopping. The last of our company left this morning, and I have spent the better part of this afternoon watching The Cooking Channel / napping / catching up on the DVR / napping / resolving DVR recording conflicts for Sunday night programming / napping.

I’m trying to sidestep the usual post-holiday letdown, and part of my strategy is watching tonight’s Downton Abbey special on PBS. Because when all other coping skills fail, I find that it’s helpful to immerse myself in all manner of behind-the-scenes details about the pretend lives of a pretend family and their pretend staff.


Anyway, I just wanted to relay a couple of pieces of information fairly quickly, and then I’ll be on my way to the Abbey.

1. For the four to six of you who are interested, I wrote a post about Christmas music over at Ree’s blog.

2. A few people asked for my grandmother’s chocolate pie recipe after I posted a picture of the finished product on Instagram. Here is the recipe for the chocolate custard – and then you just pour it into a baked pie shell, let it cool, and then add merengue. I make my merengue with 3 egg whites, 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar, and 3 tablespoons of sugar. I whip the egg whites and cream of tartar until the egg whites are stiff, and I add the sugar during the last couple of minutes. Brown in a 400 degree oven for about 8 minutes.

See? Magic.

  6. well I’ll be danged, but that is the exact recipe that I have for my mama’s famous chocolate pie right down to browning the meringue and taking the pudding off of the heat to add the butter and vanilla. It is fabulous. My poor ol recipe card is pretty tattered and smeared with remnants of chocolate puddings from Thanksgiving’s past!

  9. Haha! I’m a sleepy, pregnant, mother of 3 children ages 6 and under… When I glanced at your post title I thought it said “CRABS are dead to me.” It makes much more sense your way, haha.

    Carbs are also dead to me (Well, they were Thanksgiving night… We’ve since been reconciled). There was an unfortunate event Thanksgiving night in which I may or may not have been able to button my jeans but may or may not have polished off the fruit salad leftovers anyway. It was not pretty, but I’m glad we’ve since made up. I just couldn’t live without them in my life.

I was wondering if you and Big Mama could list the books your children have enjoyed are are enjoying reading now. I have a granddaughter and grandson the same ages and two others a little younger. I give them books each birthday/Christmas and had no problem finding good books when they were younger but it’s getting harder now. I didn’t leave this note on her blog but am hoping you will discuss with her. If both are too busy now (and I fully understand) maybe in the future. Or even on the Pioneer Woman’s blog. As I sit here from the comfort of my couch, pigging out on birthday cake, knowing full and well that I promised to start my diet right after Thanksgiving, I can say with almost 100% confidence that that will not be happening. Mostly because that pie looks mouth wateringly tasty. My daughter agrees. Oh boy…
