Eau de Charred Tomatoes (And A Giveaway)

I wasn’t planning on doing anything special for supper tonight – just serving my people some leftovers that we could all pretend were tasty and delicious – but at the last minute my husband suggested that we go out to dinner. It took me all of two seconds to say, “YES, PLEASE,” and within a couple of minutes we were in the car and on our way.

We ate supper at one of our favorite non-Chuy’s Mexican places (Chuy’s, of course, is the pinnacle), strolled through a nearby bookstore, and grabbed some frozen yogurt before we headed home. I’m going to be out of town this weekend, so as we pulled in the garage, I was thinking about how fun it had been to have an unexpected night on the town with my fellas before I leave for a couple of days. I was still in my little reverie as I got out of the car, but then I stopped, and I looked around, and I smelled it.

I didn’t know what “it” was, exactly. But I knew that it was a cross between Italian food, smoke, and a white-hot BBQ grill.

Then it dawned on me.

I must not have. Turned off. The leftovers. On the stove.

I mean, I thought I did. I announced that I was going to turn them off. But apparently there was a significant user error, because when we walked through the kitchen door, I realized that I might need to practice getting that control knob to the COMPLETELY OFF position.

Oh, y’all. The smoke. It was so very smoke-y. Granted, I’m so grateful that nothing actually, you know, caught on fire, and I think we’ve gotten most of the smoke out of the house, but oh, it is some charred-smelling awfulness in this place tonight.

And for the record, I am never cooking meatballs again.

Anyway. Let’s talk about something fun now. Like prizes!

Here’s the winner of the cornstick pan and two copies of A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet.

Yay, Jennifer! I just sent you an email.

I’m also starting to feel like a game show host. And I don’t mind it.

So I’ll make this next giveaway pretty quick because I need to start typing “how to get smell of burned Italian food out of my house” into the Google, but I think y’all will enjoy this next little Southern treat. Especially if you’re planning to take some road trips this summer because, well, hash brown casserole, anyone?

Yep. It’s a $50 gift card to Cracker Barrel, plus, you know, a copy of this book.

And who knows? If I can’t get this smell out of my house, I may be at the Cracker Barrel first thing in the morning. Coffee and homemade biscuits can cure a world of hurts, you know.

Have a great weekend, y’all!

Left the middle burner until the big flat middle grill part on the entire time we were gone. Again, so thankful our house didn’t catch on fire or something crazy but yikes…

And a nice little catch to your giveaway today would be the winner has to order something salty, something sweet, and take a picture of it all at Cracker Barrel while reading your book. Just a little food for thought…

  30. Bethany says:

I too am SO GLAD your house is okay! Scary. And I’d love to eat some Cracker Barrel. I actually searched for your name at our public library in Ohio last night, and I was delighted to see that it was “on order” not only for my library but for all the Ohio libraries in their association (something like 7 libraries maybe?). Yay!

  31. Wow, I’m glad you have only a bad smell to deal with (although I know that’s kinda awful).

  32. C Smith says:

I love Cracker Barrel. We have one at the exit on our way out of town and we always stop there whenever we go on a trip. The kids aren’t nearly as excited about our destination as they are to eat there.

  33. The pancakes at Cracker Barrel are the best!

  34. Heather Reeve says:

Love me some Cracker Barrell BlackBerry jam! And, I can’t wait to read your book!!

  35. Can’t wait to read your book!

  36. The broccoli-cheddar chicken casserole on Wednesday nights is the bomb.com but I’d blow my whole gift card on the cute bracelet watches they have in the shop! I’ve worn them for years – apparently my only fashion talent is finding sassy beaded watchbands to match my outfits. Speaking of outfits, I went to Belk the same day you did and saved $160.02 on some new summer tops! I wonder if we bought the same ones. I ventured far from my usual black, black, black and got some prints. I feel so brave. Thanks for all these fun opportunities to win goodies!

  37. I have never eaten at a Cracker Barrell. I really enjoyed the first chapter of your book.

  38. Would love to win this. Especially the book!!

  45. Timmarie says:

We are road tripping this summer. And The Barrel would be a perfect place to start the journey.

  46. Cheryl Stanley says:

If Boomama recommends a restaurant or new TV series I know it will be a winner. Our family drove all the way from Canada to try out Chuys… it did not disappoint. That was a good thing as we had been driving 18 hours when we stopped! Your TV recommendations have caused me to hole up with some steady wifi and watch hours of BBC dramas until I have caught up. I would love an excuse to take a road trip to a Cracker Barrel!

  47. Your blog has been lovely lately- enjoying your posts and very excited for your book coming out next week…

  48. It is my goal to win the gift card and go in and finally find out how they got their name at Cracker Barrel. As I see it, Biscuit Barrel is just as cute a name. Hash Brown Casserole Barrel sounds like the perfect quantity for me. Oh, and I can’t wait to read your book!!

  49. Leaving the stove on is a huge fear of mine!! Glad nothing caught on fire!

  50. Julie H. says:

I can’t wait to read your book!

  51. Julie B says:

Love the new header! (Is that what it is called? I’m a blog reader/lurker, but nothing else computerish.) Can’t wait to read the book. And Cracker Barrel?? — I actually let my daughter order the Carb overload dinner: aka Chicken and Dumplings with sides of Mac and Cheese and Mashed Potatoes. Yes, the skinny kid gets that treat once in a blue moon.

  52. Yesterday it was cornbread related memories – today “Crackel” Barrel? It may be more than I can handle. Do you want to know the #1 for sure sign to anyone in my family that yes, I really was pregnant 1, 2, 3 & 4 times? A vegetable plate a Cracker Barrel. Would you be surprised to know that I did, in fact, shed a real and authentic tear when I found out that I could add a complete additional side to a “vegetable” plate (because, let’s face it. Only in the south can mac & cheese, dumplins and hash brown casserole be deemed a vegetable) for only $1? Probably #6 on my list of best life moments ever. I really really really hope I win. Because, even though there is no chance that I am pregnant, there is a 100% chance that I would love to eat a vegetable plate and read your book. But not necessarily at the same time. Pick me.

  53. I love the hash brown casserole at Cracker Barrel! I love their fried okra, too! We are planning a vacation for our whole family – – four generations! – – in July. My mom will have every Cracker Barrel circled on her “trip-tick” from AAA :) (remember those?)

I am anxiously waiting to get your new book! One, because I love your writing and humor, and two, to prove to my adult children that you and I are BFFs. Whenever I share something funny you’ve written, my kids say, “Mom, you act like you two know each other!” And I always answer…….”Well, we do!!!” ;)

  54. Cindie Heavner says:

Whoooooo…..would love to win some Cracker Barrell! And, after reading the first chapter of your book, MUST have a copy of that!

  55. Stephanie says:

So looking forward to reading your book.

  56. LOVE CB and cant wait to read your book!

  57. Oh what a treat it would be to win both of those items!

  58. Cracker Barrel…Love it! :) Anxiously waiting to read your book! Pick me….please and thank you!

  59. Anna Beth says:

Well, I actually caught my groceris on fire by setting them on top of the stove! I somehow managed to turn it on without realizing it. It got noisy in there so I went to check it out, and my groceries were up in flames! Very scary moment with a baby in the house! But the fire exinguisher put it right out. So, don’t put your groceries on top of your glass top stove people- no matter how cluttered your counter are! And oh how I love Cracker Barrel! And I’m so excited that your book will be out SO soon!

  60. We do love the Cracker Barrel around here! Also, I’m very sorry for your stinky house. Yuck!

  61. Jennifer says:

Love that place. Can’t wait to read your book!

  62. Love love love the Cracker Barrel!! Oh yes ma’am!!

  63. My kids always want to go to Cracker Barrell!!

  64. Pam Means says:

I LOVE Cracker Barrel and can’t wait to read your book!!!

  65. Please count me in for the Cracker Barrel and your book!

  66. Oh, to win your book would make me happy!

  67. Pick me, pick me. I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on your book.

  68. Oh, I haven’t eaten at a Cracker Barrel in a long time! I love their breakfast.

  69. Elizabeth Cisneros says:

I did the same thing last week with spaghetti sauce. Except I left it on all night long. The smell in the house was pretty good actually. But the hour I spent scraping burned sauce that had become one with my Le Creuset dutch oven was not a good one.

I love the CB! It is always my first stop when I come “home” to Tennessee to visit my family. Breakfast = order of molasses and biscuits with a side of country ham. Because nothing says togetherness like clogging your arteries with those you love.

  70. I can’t wait either! (to read your book) I pre-ordered on Amazon, but would just love to win a SIGNED copy!?

  71. Julie C says:

Pick Me Pick Me! It’s 1 am and i’m hungry – read your post and now I want a Cracker Barrel biscuit real bad! So glad there wasn’t any damage other than smoke.

  72. Do we even have a Cracker Barrel in our area? Methinks I will have to be looking that up…

  73. I LOVE Cracker Barrel! And not just for the food, which is enough right there, but also for the , wait for it, clothes! And not the cutesy stuff, the really nice fashionable stuff. I have two very nice tops that I always get compliments on and I bought them at CB! And my denim jacket is from there, too. Who knew?

As for the smoke smell, get a bottle of Simple Green, dilute per the instructions and wipe down your kitchen cabinets, at the very least, maybe wipe down any adjacent walls. The smoke clings to surfaces even after you can’t see it in the air. I know this from personal experience. It was a pain to totally clean the cabinets and walls a week before Christmas that time I accidentally microwaved the sweet rolls in their hard plastic bakery container, but the Simple Green did the trick.

  74. Love me some Cracker Barrel. And I never turn down a free book!

  75. I’m just glad you didn’t have a fire. I’ve come so close so many times. One time in particular I was baking my husband a birthday cake that overflowed in the oven. My husband came home about that time, opened the garage door and almost called 911 for all the smoke billowing out the door I had propped open.

  76. Jenn H. says:

Oh man, this one is a win-win!
First and foremost, I’d love to win a copy of your book.
    But CRACKER BARREL, too?!
    Yes please! :)

  77. Cracker Barrel is the perfect spot for a yummy breakfast on vacation. Would love to win your book too!! Can’t wait to read it.

  78. Elizabeth says:

Road trip…Cracker Barrel…your book. Fun and yum!

  79. I can’t wait to read your book!

  80. I am looking forward to your book, and also to trying Chuy’s! (which is supposed to be coming to Kansas City soon)

The closest Cracker Barrel is in Boise, but since I plan on going to Glacier Park in Montana, I’m sure we could swing right by! Looking forward to reading your book, whether I win or not;)

  85. Lynette says:

I could eat a lot of egg sandwiches and hash brown casserole with that gift certificate!!!

  86. Love me some CB and looking forward to reading your book!
