Next Up: I Re-Fold My Sweaters!

This past weekend I did two things that changed my whole outlook.

Well. Maybe not my WHOLE outlook. That would be a task for Jesus, I’m guessing. But these two things definitely put a smile on my face, and the fact that they were relatively inexpensive makes them even better.

So. Ready to be astounded and amazed?

1. I re-organized my pantry shelves.

I know. It’s terribly exciting. But I hadn’t touched the shelves all year – other than to throw and cram stuff on them – so I cleaned them off, threw away a bunch of stuff, bought a couple of new plastic bins from the Walmarts, and in about thirty minutes, I went from this shameful state…

…to this much more tidy state (and Mama, if you’re looking at this post, just ignore the confectioner’s sugar that spilled – I hadn’t gotten that far when I took the picture) (I know it’s making you twitch).

There’s Halloween candy in the mix, by the way. Lest you think that mini-Ring Pops are a mealtime staple.

So that was the first thing. Here’s the second thing.

2. I bought new soup bowls.

Seriously. It was a wild and crazy weekend around here, as I’m sure you can tell.

But aren’t they cute? I haven’t had new soup bowls in, oh, about thirteen years, and we were down to just a couple of our bigger bowls that are perfect for chili and stew and whatnot. I found these in Home Goods for a whopping $3.99 each, so I bought 6 and smiled all the way home. We’ve already used them twice.

Sometimes it’s the little things, you know?

  1. Now I don’t feel so badly about my pantry shelves! ;-) And I love your new soup bowls. It’s always nice to have a few favorite little things around.

  2. I love soup bowl mugs! I don’t feel as bad (or look as bad) when I turn the mug up to drink the last bit of soup ;)

  3. Totally agree on ‘it’s the little things’. Found a couple of books (no longer in print) at a used book store of an author I like to read and I thought I’d won the lottery…that is if I participated.

  4. Jennifer S says:

LOVE the soup bowls. I know exactly how you feel – I bought new dishes for the first time in 20 years at least…the old ones were chipped and I had maybe one cereal bowl left. I had the best time cleaning out the cabinets and putting the new dishes in!

  5. The simple things are best, aren’t they? Order makes me happy (not that there is any at my house, however…!)

  6. Oh, the dancing and rejoicing that happened around my house when I straightened my pantry. You are SOOO right. It IS the little things. Love your new soup bowls, by the way.

  7. I LOVE your new soup bowls. I’ve honestly thought about them since you posted them on Instagram. I feel like they are a necessity. Unfortunately, Homegoods is a good hour away from my house so I’m trying to decide how much of a necessity they are. I’m thinking this weekend it will be dire.

  8. i’ve already made a few soups and have realized I am in dire need of soup bowls. I love those! And I totally get what you mean about cleaning for a new state of mind. I gutted our bedroom yesterday and moved some things and I felt like a new woman last night. Clean room, clean sheets, clean mind.

*And just to show you I’m mildly neurotic I also feel a bonus clean when I run the clean cycle of my washer and dishwasher. Help me. lol

  9. I love that feeling! But apparently not enough to clean out my pantry. I recently bought stacking coffee mugs from World Market and I can’t tell you how much I love them! Here’s the link if you want to buy them too. Only $14.99 for 6! It is the little things!

  10. Last night before I went to bed, I texted my husband (he works nights; that’s not as weird as it sounds) and said, “Having a clean kitchen is soooo nice!” After being sick for nearly a week, I’d let the dishes pile up. I mean, this happens fairly regularly but this time I had an excuse. Anyway, together we got it whipped into shape yesterday, and I couldn’t stop smiling every time I walked by that room. It really is the little things.

  11. “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” … grin! There is no denying it makes one feel better! I once heard a pastor say that you can tell the state of one’s spiritual life by peeking into their car. If car is filthy … good indication of what their spiritual life is like. OOOHHH, that hit me hard. By the way, his wife totally disagreed! Ha! I was swamped with little kids, but I went out and cleaned my car!! Grin!

  12. Kathleen George says:

So right about the pantry. My daughters friend is in the process of moving and gave her some nice, if not used coffee and soup mugs. Ours pretty much were stained and chipped. Did the happy dance. Boomama, you’re on a roll with your last three posts. You really get us. Have a nice day.

  13. I love that you have TOILET PAPER in your pantry! Let me guess – you live in an older farmhouse and have no place to store everything…(that’s MY story, and I’m sticking to it!).

Enjoy that organized pantry for as long as it will stay that way!

  14. Mary Beth says:

Love the new soup mugs! They look like they came from Anthropologie! Now I’m wanting to go home, rearrange my pantry and make soup :)

  15. Love the soup bowls, and would love to have a pantry!

  16. I love that you are so real and have a “normal” pantry like everyone else! I love that you have toilet paper AND golf balls in your pantry because I do too! I feel less crazy now. It would do me no good to store the tp anywhere else because I live with 2 boys(husband & son) and they would never tell me if/when we ran out. At least I see it before it’s too late in the pantry! Enjoy your soup bowls :)

  17. KimberlyOKC says:

Love the pantry clean up!! I plan to bring my nightstand drawer to the kitchen tomorrow and organize it…and I bet I will feel AMAZING when I’m done. Confession, I spilled water in the night and it melted all my cough drops and now lotsa stuff sticks to the bottom of the drawer…eeeewwww! So hey, here’s to your hair appointment tomorrow!!!

  18. KimberlyOKC says:

Oh, I bought something today that made me smile…a burlap looking pillow from Hobby Lobby that says, “Hey, Y’all”. :)))))

  19. I was forced to clean out my pantry last month after pantry moths took over. HEAVENS!!! They are hard to get rid of, but the pantry looks amazing now!!!
