Chris & Edith & The Farmer & Etc.

Earlier tonight I looked at the TV schedule and thought, There’s a three-hour premiere of The Bachelor? That is ridiculous. And I have a feeling that it’s also about two hours too long.

But then I found out that parts of it were live from Los Angeles, with red carpet interviews and whatnot, and suddenly I was all, Well, now I sort of feel like I have an OBLIGATION to watch. In the interest of keeping up with pop culture, of course.

There is nothing like a live television broadcast to ramp up some crazytown shenanigans.

Given all of that, I’m about the fire up the DVR, not to mention that I need to do a little research on Blake Lively’s new baby. Because anyone who works with teenage girls knows that if Blake Lively experiences any sort of major life event, you’d better bring your A-game in terms of information. I would totally prepare a spreadsheet if I had the foggiest idea how to actually prepare a spreadsheet.

So. Three quick things before I close the computer and pick up the remote:

– I watched Downton Abbey late last night (you may want to stop reading now if you haven’t seen it yet, because SPOILER), and as I thought back on the episode while I was getting ready this morning, here was my big takeaway.

– This has nothing to do with anything, really, but a few days ago I had to buy eyeshadow, and I realized that it’s the third time that I’ve bought this particular kind. If you are fair-skinned or just don’t like to wear a lot of shimmer-y make-up, this Naked Basics Palette is THE BEST.

It also lasts a sweet forever. Can’t recommend it enough (and there’s also a palette with darker matte colors if you feel like those shades would work better for you).

– Three TV shows really surprised me in 2014, so I wrote about them over at Ree’s blog. And judging by the comments? The first show that I wrote about has developed a big following in a relatively short amount of time. Made me smile.

All righty. I’m gonna do my best to get through this THREE HOUR TELEVISION EVENT with Farmer Chris and the latest round of bachelorettes. My guess is that there’s a whole lot of awkward in store.

Are any of y’all watching?

  1. My friend, there is just ALL kinds of awkwardness in that blessed three hour premiere. Just get yourself ready. I haven’t quite composed my thoughts into articulate words yet.

As for the Naked Basics….yes and amen. My fave!

So glad my new BFFs Chip and Jo are back tomorrow night. I can only watch the same reruns so many times, ya know?!

Hope y’all have had the happiest new year. Here we go on another semester. Can’t wait for the new book!

  2. My favorite line from last night’s episode of Downton Abbey was – “I’m going upstairs to take off my hat” Lady Mary.

For some reason that particular line made me laugh out loud!!

    • Becky in 'Bama says:

Ha! my husband paused the DVR looked at me and said, “she’s going upstairs to take off her hat?” We both got a good ‘my how times have changed’ belly laugh over that. I mostly think it is just plain funny how my husband (super jock, avid golfer) is SO into Downton Abbey, or anything else on Masterpiece Theater.

  3. just the opening music for Downton Abbey makes me happy.
(As you like to say: SPOILER ALERTS!!!) I felt like a couple of times the writers forced 2014 sensibilities into the characters’ mouths. (Mrs. Hughes making a joke about Carson’s use of the word “flux”??? Really???). And I could not STAND the teacher character’s brash behavior. As a first time guest in their home, she was just plain rude and ridiculous. But, Cora’s line about rudeness not being the way to respond to rudeness was classic, and one of her better lines.
And yes, Edith had a VERY BRADY moment!!!! Bless her heart…..

  4. I was surprised by how much I love Jersey Belle, too. Check out Jaime’s daily video’s, called Coffee Talk, on her Twitter. They are very real, and contain positive messages. I’m hoping for more episodes.

  5. There were many “lols” in Downton this week, but I have a fear: I think we’re being set up for Granny’s departure. She complained several times of being tired and she left the party early because she was exhausted after playing match-maker (un-match-maker?). She still had the best line (although Mary’s hat line was a close second): “Principles are like prayers. Noble, of course, but awkward at a party.” I hope I’m wrong because what would we do without Violet?

  6. I am watching Farmer Chris too because I like t watch train wrecks apparently. There’s just something about the Bachelor that’s like a siren song to me.

  7. I am about to buy that pallette. I always thought you had to buy that big one. So glad you posted this!!

  8. So, I did watch Downtown. I lost it when, according to Mary “yes, we’re fine, Edith just decided to set fire to her room tonight”. So Mary, so tragically Jan Brady/Edith.

And my preachers posting gems on Twitter, might want to follow him!
    Both start with ‘B’.
Both have 3 syllables, more or less.
    Just a coincidence ?

And yes! Jersery Belle! Having moved from Bham to Silicon Valley, I’ve made a dear friend from Jersey- we’ve had a blast watching!

  9. Beth Wittenbach says:

There is a show on PBS called A Chef’s Life that we are currently loving!! It is a documentary about a city chef who moves back to her hometown in North Carolina to open a restaurant. Each episode she learns about a specific food, goes to a farm and talks to locals about how they make that food, and then makes it in her restaurant. Try it out!!!

  10. I loved your post on PW…..Fixer Upper is a new favorite at our house. I loved Downton this week – one of my favorite parts was everyone noticing Mosely’s new hair color. :)

  11. Lauralli says:

Do you know where we can watch the “episodes” of the SEC wives show? I only saw one! Hoping to see the other two!

  12. I felt like I waited forever for Fixer Upper to come back with new episodes. We fell in love with the couple from last night’s show and laughed over Chip’s antics. My daughter said, “He reminds me of Dad.” I married a crazy.
    Love that show!
Downton Abbey was a bit on the boring side (I thought), but hope it revs up a little bit next week.

  13. Ann in Maryland says:

Well, there should be plenty of awkward on the Bachelor because they now have 30 women competing. Thirty women! That poor guy. I felt overwhelmed just watching the show!

  14. I’m going to be on Fixer Upper!! Well, my sister and brother-in-law are, but I got to go to the family part that shows at the end, so maybe i will be. Episode 6 of season 2. WooHoo!!

  15. Jennifer says:

Oh, Edith. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say again (much to the chagrin of my husband, who cringes when I say such things): The woman always looks like she just walked into someone’s toot.

    • Oh my gosh! I just laughed out loud at your “toot” comment! So funny … and I TOTALLY agree.

  16. Ahh, I’m so happy Downton Abbey is back! And I’m so excited that Lord Gillingham presumably won the love-battle :D

  17. Melissa E. says:

Our church is in a 40 day fast and I fasted TV and social media. Little did I know at the time Dowtown Abbey and The Bachelor were starting. There is a lady in my bible study whose daughter is Megan from Teneessee. Hope she does well.

  18. OH MY WORD………..3 hours is INSANE! He seems like a genuine, nice man but some of these woman……………YIKES!

  19. Libby Gordon says:

I have this same Naked palette and I love the colors-shimmer is not for me because I’m like fifty, not fifteen.
My favorite Bachelor moment (I had to skip the faux red carpet premier -death by boredom) had to be Tory at the rose ceremony where she was just about to fall off those children’s church choir risers. I was really glad she’s coming back because she is so entertaining.
