Well. Hello there.

I realize that it’s been some several months since I wrote a blog post, so the odds that more than four people will see this post are pretty small. Nonetheless, I’ve been down for the count with the sinus plague for the last few days, and I’ve pondered more than once that 1) I have a blog 2) I can still use it and 3) Maybe this is a fine time to play a little bloggy catch-up.

So here I am.

I’m actually headed to Atlanta in just a little bit for a speaking thing (I realize that there are better ways to say that than “speaking thing,” but somehow “event” or “engagement” seems fancier than I have a mind to be, so “thing” it is), and since Hazel is currently super content to stay *THISCLOSE* to me while I’m doing a few things on the computer, I’m going to do my best to write a whole post before it’s time to get ready. Since I’m a little out of practice with the organizational structure of a blog post and all the necessary transitions, I’m going to stick to a list format because I think that’ll be easier for all of us.

I trust my over-explaining has removed any morsel of joy from the reading process. You’re welcome.

1. I never intended to take a break from the blog. Well, except that after Mama died I did sort of want a break so that I could think and process and grieve and all of those things. But then, after those few months, I was smack-dab in the middle of writing the devotional book, so that got most (all) of my writing energy. And when I finished the devotional book, I flat-out craved some time to just be with my people and soak up ordinary life and try to take care of myself a little better. So that’s what I’ve been doing for the better part of a year. I would not trade a second of it. Don’t get me wrong: I love writing. But it took me a full calendar year to start to miss it. Isn’t that weird?

2. It took a while, but over the last couple of months, I really have missed writing; I’ve missed being in my head and thinking about a story and figuring out a way to tell it. So I have just started to TIPPY-TOE into writing a new book. It’s been fun to start to plan and figure out how to write paragraphs again. At the rate I’m going the book will be finished in approximately 2024, so clearly I’m going to have to pick up the pace this summer.

3. Alex turned 15 (FIFTEEN!) last month, and I have so many feelings about the fact that this is the last year for me to drive him around and drop him off and pick him up because this time next year, HE WILL BE DRIVING AN ACTUAL CAR ALL ALONE. How does this happen? How is this person currently in possession of a driver’s permit?

I know that Melanie and I have talked ad nauseam on the podcast about how much we love this current stage of parenting, but sweet mercy it’s the truth. It’s hard in ways that surprise me sometimes – mainly because of the issues / decisions in play – but my goodness it’s delightful.

4. Our Spring Break was about a month ago, and at the last minute we decided to piggyback on a trip to Washington, DC that our friends Stephanie and Joey were planning for their family. We couldn’t leave at the same time, but that Sunday night we met at our hotel in Arlington, and on Monday morning we HIT IT in terms of seeing the DC sights. We had the best time. We laughed until we hurt.

I did in fact get “the food poisoning,” as Martha would say, on our second night there, but that’s another story for another time. And the important thing is that I was able to push through and did not in fact miss our tour of the Holocaust Memorial Museum the next morning. Which reminds me: if you have not visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum, GO. It is heartbreaking and breathtaking and will stay with you long after you leave.

5. The day after we got home from DC, my friend Daphne drove to Birmingham so that we could go to Columbus, Ohio to see Mississippi State play in the Women’s Final Four. It is one of my favorite things I have ever done. After State won their semi-final game against Louisville, Sister flew in from Nashville, and y’all, we had ourselves a blast. I loved getting to see Columbus and OSU, but the most fun part of all was being with our fellow Bulldogs. It felt like Columbus was the midwestern Bulldog outpost for a few days.

The end of the championship game? KILLER. I still get a little twinge in my heart when I think about it. But oh my goodness. What a blast to follow State’s team all the way to the Final Four. I wouldn’t change a thing (except the last three seconds of that game). :-)

Okay. I need get ready to hit the road for Atlanta. But I hope y’all are doing great! Don’t forget that I’m on Twitter and Instagram (I. LOVE. ME. SOME. INSTAGRAM.) if there’s another bloggy break that I don’t anticipate. Social media can be a good back-up plan.

It probably goes without saying that we don’t know what to think about our current level of podcast productivity. We would like to think that we’ll continue to be consistent and won’t take a random two-month break at some point, but, well, you know us. So it’s probably wise for all of us to keep our expectations in check.

Some of you may know that Mississippi State lost the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship thanks to an incredible last-second shot by Notre Dame, so in the first part of episode 101, Melanie and I take some time to walk through some of the post-game emotions I felt last week in Columbus, OH.
