AI – Top 10

Love me some Gwen Stefani, y’all.

LaKisha Jones – “Last Dance” – First, it would seem that “Kiki” has picked up the Stephanie Edwards-cute dress torch, and for that I thank her. Second, I just feel like she’s not picking the right songs. She followed Simon’s instructions from last week in terms of redisovering her young and fun side, but this song wasn’t my favorite. It was good, don’t get me wrong; but I just didn’t think it was special. The judges, however, seemed to like it a lot, so good for her.

Chris Sligh – “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” – He did have a lot of trouble staying with the music. The part that bothers me the most is that I so want for him to stand out and be special, and it’s just not happening for him. He’s so likeable and funny, but he’s got to step up his vocal game if he’s gonna be a CONTENDAH.

Gina Glocksen – “I’ll Stand By You” – I thought this was hands-down her best performance of the competition. She sounded great, and she made me enjoy a song that I’ve never really liked before. I like her so much. And those fun red streaks in her hair are just gravy.

Sanjaya Malakar – “Bathwater” – WHAT IN THE SAM HILL? WHAT IN THE SAM EVER-LOVIN’ HILL? I can’t even talk about it. I can, however, give you three words: hot stinkin’ mess.

Haley Scarnato – “True Colors” – It wasn’t bad. But it just sounded like the background music to a commercial for a prescription medication. You know, the whole thing with a couple walking through the wheat field, a woman adjusting her sun hat, and a group of women throwing back their heads as they laugh and sip lemonade while an announcer warns the viewers that taking the medication could lead to dry mouth and stomach cramps. Which probably wasn’t the effect that Haley was going for at all.

Phil Stacey – “Every Breath You Take” – I thought he sounded pretty good considering that this song makes me want to run barefooted over red-hot coals and then stick my feet in a pool of menthol.

Melinda Doolittle – “Heaven Knows” – She looked so cute and fun, y’all! And she is absolutely the most consistent singer who has ever been in this competition. She is so great, and I just love the range of her voice…she sounds just as good singing those low notes as she does when she belts out the higher ones. Talent galore she has.

Blake Lewis – “Love Song” – Yes, it was an interesting interpretation of the song. I give him credit for his originality. But honestly, I was a little bored.

Jordin Sparks – “Hey Baby” – She’s adorable, but I didn’t love this song for her. There just wasn’t enough of a melody in this song for her to show off what she can do, so I sort of felt like she was “sing-talking” throughout her performance. She was definitely cute and playful, though.

Chris Richardson – “Don’t Speak” – I actually really, really liked his performance. This song sounded nothing like Gwen Stefani’s version, and that was a plus for me. He was a little nasal-sounding in spots, but I loved the arrangement.

Who should go? The boy who wore his hair in lots of ponytails as if hoping to distract us from the fact that HE CANNOT SING VERY WELL AT ALL.

Best of the night? Once again, I loved Melinda – but I think my favorite performance tonight was Gina’s. No kidding.

  1. girl – i totally agree…Gina was absolutely wonderful/fabo!!! I sure wish she would get that dang piercing out of her tongue! T-A-C-K-Y!! :-)

  2. I have been anxiously awaiting your recap so that I can say one thing.

If Sanjaya remains after this week, I weep for the youth of America.

Seriously, that hair was seven kinds of wrong.

  3. I agree about Sanjaya. He really should have gone home from day one. And Haley would be more at home on that “You’re the One That I Want” Grease show.
Everyone else I think did fairly well, with Gina having a breakthrough night. It’ll be interesting to see what happens (READ: it’ll be interesting to see who goes home since we know Sanjaya won’t).

  4. Aw, man, you hate my song! Every Breath You Take makes me swoon and had I a cigarette lighter, I’d sway gently and flick my bic. I fear for Sligh this week if what-the-heck-hair boy stays.

  5. I cannot bring myself to watch AI after the Mandisa heartbreaker last year, but thank you for providing this info so that I can pretend I know what’s going on around everyone else. You have assured me a small degree of social acceptability. Thank you, BooMama.

  6. I don’t think it was a great night, overall. Melinda ruled, as usual, in her That Girl ensemble. Looks like Sanjaya is seeing just how much he can get away with, since Votefortheworst is supporting him now.

    Who knows what will happen?

  7. Rocks in my Dryer says:

It’s not very often I actually talk out loud to my television set, but when Sanjaya came out, I actually YELLED at the TV, “nuh-UH!”

  8. I missed the whole show except for the recap at the end. When I saw Sanjaya’s hair I just laughed. I laughed and I cried a little bit for the state of our country if the hula dancer makes it another week.

Seriously, that “vote for the worst” site could possibly RUIN American Idol. And then what would we have? We would have NOTHING.

    Jamie

  9. Hilarious! I feel so behind because I never knew you did an A.I. recap post. I’ve been missing out. Tonight’s performances have at least redeemed Idol as a whole for me as after last week I was ready to just delete it from the Tivo list. I just am not sure how much longer the Sanjaya thing can go on. It’s just such a horrible joke gone wrong.

    Steph

  10. Loved Gina, Blake, and Chris.
Didn’t like Haley, Sanjaya, Jordan, or Chris Sligh.

    I

  11. For some reason the last of my comment got hacked!

    I said…….

    I

  12. UGH!!!

For some reason the last of my comment got hacked!

    I said…….

I LOVE Blake!!! Did I mention I like Blake? Just like Chris Daughtry, even if the doesn’t win, he will get a deal. I think he’s the best b/c not only can he sing, he’s orignal. Melinda rocks it with the vocals but y’all, she’s ugly! IDK why, but her having no neck and that gap in her teeth disturb me!

    Okay, done ranting!

  13. To me, it’s just pretty interesting to see what happens with the contestants each week. How the previous week’s feedback affects their performance and what they wear.

KiKi was showing a bit too much on top for my comfort level – I don’t think her boots were the only thing folks were noticing.

And Chris Sligh just didn’t look comfortable. I wonder if he’s just starting to tire of the whole thing.

Gina was awesome, but their wasn’t enough of her outfit to suit me.

I really liked Jordin and I think she’s growing more confident each week.

Sanjaya, oh my word. He just breathes and folks vote for him. So wrong. W-R-O-N-G.

I figure Haley is probably the next to go though. And I think she should head directly to Disney. She would be a perfect fit over there!

  14. Hey there BooMama. THought you might find this rather amusing. I sure did, and I don’t even live in America, so I can’t watch the show *grin*

  15. I look forward to your AI recap each week! Even if we different taste in music, I can always get a smile, if not a laugh, from your reviews (i.e. Hayley’s commercial piece).

PP Nancy has a good suggestion. Haley would be a great Disney character! Since they provide the costumes, she wouldn’t have to mess with double stick tape on her tops.

  16. P.S. You probably already saw this, but just in case, it’s worth it- did anyone see
SNL’s Sanjaya parody last Saturday? Hilarious…

    Steph

  17. I just…can’t remember anything about it because someone with a fauxhawk/poodletop/ponyhawk/iwishiwascoolhawk was in my way all night!

  18. suzanne says:

His hair was like the very shiny coin designed to draw attention AWAY from the bathing suited form you mentioned last week..(away from the bad, bad singing) …but it was VERY VERY SHINY, almost to the point of needing to look away…but I just couldn’t stop looking at the freakish hairdo the boy had on. OH MY WORD.

  19. I’m tellin’ ya, little cutie-patootie Jordan is gonna be a dark horse in this thing. SO precious. SO likeable. SO youthful. SO current. In other words, SO marketable! ;-) (And that truly is what this competition is about, huh?)

I somehow felt like poor little Mowgli, um, Sanjaya, was thumbing his nose at America w/ that crazy fauxhawk stunt. STOP THE MADNESS!!!!!!!

  20. Sanjaya’s new look can best be described in the words of my 3-yr old daughter. Upon seeing him, she exclaimed, “Look! He’s a dinosaur!” 2 minutes later, she changed her mind and decided he was a zebra. I couldn’t argue.

  21. I think Sanjaya is just doing whatever he wants because he knows votefortheworst.com is pulling for him, and the calls are coming in. Do you think he even knows how ridiculous he appears compared to the others???!!!!
And Haley, beautiful Haley….her “speak to the hand ’cause the ear’s not listenin'” thing just CRAWLS ALL OVER ME! Get a new move……I am in stitches just thinking about that commercial!!
And I loved Phil Stacey last night.

  22. I totally agree with you! Gina was my favorite as well last night. The only reason to keep Sanjaya in another week is because I get to laugh hysterically every week.

  23. Sanjaya – his big hair was not only freakish but also lopsided. The poor dear is taking the whole thing like a trouper though- I think I would be a puddle of tears if I was in his place… short of quitting he’s gotta keep going.

  24. LOL! I COMPLETELY AGREE!! You have good taste. :) I actually voted. I NEVER vote. But I voted for about 5 people..all the while chanting: please let him go home this week, please let him go home this week, please let him go home this week…

  25. Well, Sanjaya sure does know how to create a buzz. He’s all people talk about. I just wish he would finally go home and we could talk about the real “contendahs.” The bad thing about Sanjaya wearing his hair in a faux-hawk like that was that he just doesn’t have the attitude to pull it off. Just seems … incongruent. Anyway, have y’all not heard of the other reason Sanjaya stays alive in this competition? It’s http://www.votefortheworst.com. Guess there really is no such thing as bad publicity.

  26. Vote for the Worst has been around for at least three seasons, and I don’t really feel like it’s kept anyone great from winning. And truly, much as I think Sanjaya should go home, I am getting a kick out of him. At least he’s trying to be memorable, which is more than could be said of Haley or Stephanie or even Chris R. in my opinion.

  27. Ok, last night was the first time I’ve seen AI. Ever. But because of you, Boomama, I decided I had to see what I was missing. Plus, the kids were gone and all I was doing was sorting baby clothes to give away (boo-hoo!). I really liked Gina. I’ve never really liked that song much, either, but man, she knocked it out of the park. I really liked Chris R.’s version of “Don’t Speak,” as well. People here are right about Haley – she should work at Disney. And I won’t even get into Sanjaya, because what’s the point?

I love Gwen Stefani, but I barely recognize her without her red lipstick! She looked so sweet last night, like she really did want to help these kids.

  28. I’ve spent just about all of my morning sitting at the computer (something I haven’t done in, oh, about forever, thanks to not having internet connection for over a month–and I’m still bitter about that), hoping to wish away this lovely little thing called morning-sickness, and trying desperately to get caught up on all my favorite little bloggie places. BUT, upon opening my browser this morning and seeing on the Fox News site a picture of Sanjaya, the very first place I hopped over to was good ol’ Boomama’s, just to see what you had to say about that, being that I didn’t get to see it last night. And you just confirmed what I expected–it was beyond words. Scary. Very scary.

I’m slowly making my way back through the entries I’ve missed and/or had to skim… I hoping by the time I’m done, I’ll be laughing too hard to think about the queasiness I’m feeling today…

  29. I DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH MORE OF SANJAYA I CAN TAKE!!!!!

  30. Blake’s version of the song actually wasn’t original, 311 did a remake of the song for the movie 50 First Dates, and i LOVED their version. Blake didn’t pull it off as well, but he is adorable none the less

  31. a little late with my comment about AI, but I just had to say to someone who wants Sanjaya off the show as badly as I do, “aaaaaaahhhh, I can’t take it anymore!!!!”
