Overheard

“Now see? Do you see? Can you see how this jacket does? I know y’all think I have an easy time buying clothes because I’m smaller, but I’m telling you, it’s AWFUL. It’s just awful!”

“Is he not the most precious, sweetest, smartest child you have ever seen in your life? He is so precious. Just precious. OH he’s precious.”

“Mama, I love it when my grandmothers are here.”

“I’m looking for a cute clip earring, something gold, maybe – but nothing too heavy, I mean they can just get so heavy, and oh, here’s a cute pair – I just wish it were a little rounder and a little thinner and a little lighter. But aren’t they adorable?”

“LOOK AT THIS SKIRT? WOULD YOU LOOK AT THIS SKIRT? ISN’T THAT THE CUTEST SKIRT YOU’VE EVER SEEN?”

“Now this is what I call livin’!”

“Well, you know she’s the only member of that family with a sense of humor.”

“I put four kinds of flavoring in this pound cake: almond, vanilla, butter and lemon.”

“Now tell me: what is this thing on my foot? Touch it. Really! Touch it.”

“I know what you mean about having a hard time figuring out which way the grain goes in meat. And I have STUDIED MEAT EXTENSIVELY.”

  3. I love the one about “touch my feet”. Too funny. My husband used to say, “taste this milk, it’s sour!” Yeah, because I LOVE to taste sour milk, I’ll get right on that….:-)

  4. FUN! I cannot WAIT to hear more!! :D

  5. Studied meat extensively.

That’s just too good. And I’ve studied good extensively.

  6. I can relate totally. I love it!

  7. What I love about this is that you truly realize what a tremendous blessing it is to love both your mother, and your mother-in-law, and for them to love you AND each other. This is a rare (far too rare) treasure. You are blessed. (And they bring pound cake with four flavors. That part has caused my mouth to water in envy.)

  8. Gotta love dem’ southern women. Can’t wait to hear more!!!

  9. Judy S. says:

Okay, So here’s something funny…. I’m sitting here at the computer reading Boomama’s latest, my husband hears me laughing and says, “Boomama?”. Yep, I’m reading what my 17 year old daughter calls, “Those random blogs that Mom reads. That’s so weird!” Thanks for the humor!

  10. Studied meat extensively? Love it.

  11. I absolutely love it!! I absolutely love that you embrace those little phrases that can ONLY come from the mouth of a true southern woman!!

  15. I hope I’m a MIL with words worth blogging about someday. My MIL can talk for hours and say NOTHING worth the first round, much less worth repeating.

What a blasat sharing bits of your day.

  16. Bwahahahahaa!!!!! “Studied meat extensively” HAHAHHAAA!!

    Mrs. U

  17. Christal says:

  22. OH MY WORD!! That is sooooo funny! Great dialogue!

  23. Love it! Oh, and when y’all figure out about the meat grain thing, pleeeeez let me know!

  24. Well, that just sounds like toooo much fun!!!

  25. Butter is the BEST flavor. Have a great visit!

  26. Love it. I can totally hear all of that being said. I especially love the commentary from the Steinmarts visits!

  27. the foot thing cracked me up… I especially love it when someone says….”Eeeeeewwwwww, smell this!”

    No thank you very much.

  28. I love family, they are a blessing and a great source of entertainment to boot. I had the weirdest dream last night. I dreamed you mailed me some food that you had been cooking, they were not even on your list of meals, but were huge chunks of caramel wrapped in wax paper, and another dessert looking treat, but in my dream I went straight for the “marbelized caramel” that was what it was you called it in your note with the sweets. I have been avioding sweets, walking, and trying to lose some weight. But have taken inspiration from your recipes on your meal planning page, so combine those two and you are cooking me sweets. I have never had a dream that included an “internet” before, you were the first. Let me know when you need my address to mail me the marbelized caramel.

  29. That’s hilarious!! Love it!

  30. Well, if she can’t figure out the grain, after having studied it extensively, then there’s no hope for me! That makes me feel tremendously better :)

  31. “Studied meat extensively” – I love it!!

  32. LOL. What a blessing you have to have your mother and mil in the same room. I won’t experience that again until eternity. Thanks for the laughs!

  33. I’ll be hittin’ every SteinMart in town this weekend to see if I can overhear some of this for myself!

  34. suzanne says:

so, so, so funny…..what a time ya’ll must be havin. And after livin’ that many years, of course she has studied meat extensively…and many other things as well. We can use her wisdom, if for nothing else than the chuckles we get from it!!! =) Sounds truly delightful!
    Thanks for sharing!

  35. That is way to much! How do you keep up with all of it??

  36. Oh yeah, I’m going to SteinMart for the very first time today. Looking for a cute new baby bag for this new little guy on the way. My Mom said they just have to have one there worth getting!

  37. Oh Alex, we also love it when the Grandmother’s come to visit. The pound cake recipe- must- simply – must be shared. The levels of southerness just made me long for my mama, a trip to Steinmart, and I am going to have study some meat this weekend.

  38. Oh. Sweet. Mercy.
Have you read your post and all the comments – don’t do it at the same time, you will need a new pair of panties, oh, excuse me, undergarments – no true lady speaks of her panties….
Enjoy the time – you should have captured it on video and put it on You Tube!

  39. I smell a reality series in the works!!

  40. This is just too hilarious! You tape record them for posterities’ sake. :)

  41. Frances says:

Keep ’em comin! I almost feel like I’m sittin on the front porch swing drinkin’ a tall glass of sweet tea listening to them recap a busy day of shopping : )

  42. Bailey's Leaf says:

Yikes on the foot thing. Tell us that she at least found a suitable pair of gold clip on’s. Did you phone Steinmart ahead of time to warn them that you would be descending with the MawMaw Yee Haw Roadtrip crew? (I think that I got the title right, eh?)

You should sit down for this one. The one and only Steinmart that we ever had closed maybe a year after opening. Apparently Ohioans aren’t Steinmart people (at least not where I am at.) Don’t get me started about my love for Target though . . .

Hope the little man is a-okay. Have fun with the fam!

  43. that whole rounder, thinner, lighter thing sounds like my wishlist for my body starting with the chest and working its way right on down..:))

  44. And where were you hiding when you heard all this great stuff?
