Delicious Green Sauce Goodness

Big Mama has graciously agreed to share her green sauce recipe with the internets. She also mentioned that she would love to say that she has never eaten an entire bowl of this stuff by herself, but that would be a lie.

And I would just like to add: ditto.

Green Sauce

3 medium size green tomatoes, coarsely chopped
4 tomatillos, coarsely chopped
1-2 jalapenos,coarsely chopped
3 small cloves garlic
3 medium size ripe avocados
4 sprigs of cilantro (I think the cilantro is optional. But I’m not much of a cilantro fan.)
1 tsp. salt (more if you like)
1 1/2 c. sour cream

Place tomatoes, tomatillos, jalapenos and garlic in saucepan. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer 15 minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Peel, seed, and slice avocados, then set aside.

Combine tomatillo mix with avocados and (OPTIONAL) cilantro in food processor until smooth. Add in salt and sour cream, then mix well.

Serve with your favorite tortilla chips – and if the chips happen to be warm, all the better.

Eat until you’re sick.

  1. How in the world do you expect me to make this when green tomatoes are hard enough to find and I can’t resist frying them up. They’d never last. Oh this sounds so good…

    Steph

  2. This DOES sound yummy! Thanks, Mamas, for sharing it with us!

  3. Oh, all right, I’ll be the stupid one and ask….

What’s a tomatillo? Never heard of it. Please be so kind as to enlighten this poor old soul, who thinks Velveeta cheese and Rotel dip is a delicacy beyond H*ll’s Kitchen haute cuisine.

Or else I’ll just have to go and eat a whole brick of the yellow congealed stuff with a whole bag of Fritos and a 2-liter of Dr. Pepper all by my lonesome.

    It would NOT be pretty…

  4. Tomatillo, definition and picture:

  5. I definitely going to the grocery store tomorrow for green tomatoes and tomatillos. And I might add extra jalapenos because I just read a diet book that said eating jalapenos is one way to up your metabolism and mine is going to need a boost because of all the chips I’m going to eat with this stuff. I would go tonight but my Beloved is gone and the 4 kids are in bed.

  6. Mercy, this sounds heavenly! Thanks M and S for the recipe!

(I started to type that as S and M but thought twice about it. Of course now I’ve already typed it anyway and drawn attention to my warped sense of humor. Oh well. :-)

I’m just wondering how bad this would be if I substituted cream cheese for some or all of the sour cream?

Or would that be just too madcap and crazy?? ;-)

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

  7. I’d love to eat a whole bowl of that by myself… but I’d have to fight my husband for it – he’d be trying to drink it with a straw.

    Yum. Yum.

  8. I have wondered this for a while, but now that I want to make this recipe, I am going to need to get it settled. Is a green tomato just an unripened red tomato, or is it it’s own variety altogether?

    Please advise.

  9. This sound delicious! I’m going to make it tommorrow…of course that means I’ll have to go BACK to the grocery store. Sometimes I feel like I live there! Oh well, this recipe sounds worth it! YUMMY!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Sarah, TN

  10. Uh, YUM! If there was ever an excuse to have a party, THIS would be it!

  11. Thanks for sharing the recipe. Can’t wait to make it.

  12. Please, please tell a northerner what is a tomatillo! I’ve got to make this stuff!

  13. Yes, what is a tomatillo? And when you say green tomato, do you mean under-ripened red ones – I’m sorry, I’m slow! ha! ha! ha! It sounds so good. Please let us know :)

  14. Now Mama… how is anyone north of the Mason Dixon Line supposed to make this southern delight when we cannot purchase a Tomatillo…

Really… I had seen them on TV but it wasn’t until I went to Virginia the first time that I ever saw one in real life… that was the same trip I saw grits… grits… we don’t have any such thing in Canada but we DO have our milk in bags…

    It sounds delicious though…

  15. Oh my.

I’m definately going to have to try this – seems we’re being overrun with green tomatoes. No red ones yet!

  16. Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you

yummy. can’t wait to try it!

  17. Eat until sick…got it. Can do.

  18. Yum. What a fine service you have done for the world by sharing this recipe. I’m only sad because it’s 8:45 am and I have to wait nine hours to go home and make it. I’ll be wiping spittle from my chin all day in anticipation…. SIGH

  19. Oh BooMama, my mouth is just watering!! My husband’s 30th birthday is tomorrow and I think I’ll make this for him. He’s a huge guacamole fan so I know he’ll just love it!

BTW, been reading your site for months now and just LOVE it. You crack me up on a daily basis. :)

  20. Halleluiah!

  21. Eat until you’re sick.

    Absolutely wicked – thank you!

  22. Thank you Gem for the tomatillo lesson because I needed it.
Thank you to both of you for sharing the recipe!
    I know what I’m going to make for the 4th!!! : )

  23. This sounds DELICIOUS! Question: do you put any water/liquid at all in with the tomatillo, tomato, jalapeno, garlic mixture when you ‘bring it to a boil’?….or is there enough juice from those 4 to boil????

  24. Oh yum! I make a wonderful roasted tomatillo sauce that’s to die for as well. Love that tangy flavor.

  25. I bet that last line isn’t in the original recipe…

But I’m a good girl and I’ll follow your directions to a T!

  26. Tomatillos I can get – but green tomaters? Do you just buy those at the grocery or pick off the vine before they’ve ripened to red? And sadly, I think we’re past being able to get avocados here – looked for them at Meijers (Meijers Shifty Takers – why pay anything?) on Saturday to make a Chipotle Taco Salad for din-din tonight and they were nowhere to be found. ::weep:: Chipotle Taco Salad still on the menu – it’s just going commando.

And I would definitely be using more cilantro than 4 sprigs – I lurve that stuff! The more the merrier.

  27. Yum!!! Care to link this tomorrow on my Favorite Ingredients Friday recipe exchange? :)

  28. oh my sweet heavenly stars – you better believe I’ll be making this! THANK YOU!!!

  29. I am grateful to you both. Do they have green tomatoes in Michigan? I am making it my personal mission to find some.

  30. This is such a bloggity wavelength post!! I just made a version of this green salsa two days ago. Mine didn’t have sour cream or avocados though…I found it on my neverending recent search to replicate Moe’s Salsa Verde, which is the most wonderful substance on earth!! Which I am forced to eat it until sick at least three times a week..can’t help it.

  31. Oh my… you know, for all you Texas peoples, I actually have the recipe for…

    Chuy’s creamy jalapeno dip

    Shhhhh, don’t tell, y’all… it’s a seekrit!

  32. This scares me a bit – I’ve never eaten a green tomato in my life, and dont even know what a tomatillo is -and I plan to move south. Obviously I need to do some reading ahead of time or they’ll ban me at the borders! Maybe Big Mama can just sell me a case of it.

  33. Now my heart is completely broken… BROKEN I tell you … because today I find out that my hero in the making isn’t a cilantro fan.

    Sniff… Sniff.

But I totally think the recipe makes up for it … because that’s just the bounce-back kind of chick I am.

Ummm … where do you find green tomatoes? Because some of us do NOT garden…

  34. OH MY WORD … I can NOT believe I forgot to mention this in my previous comment … but I thought you might want to mention this to … the powers that be …[cue dramatic music for Martie] … Kohls is having a SALE ON LUGGAGE this weekend … as in 50-60% OFF! Oh yes they are! So, is she near a Kohls???

  35. I will SO have to try this! YUM!

  36. Oh!!!!! This is the hit of our 4th of July!!!!!!! Yummmmmmm
Thanks for sharing! We love it!
