Only The World

Almost two years ago my friend NK and I headed to Knoxville, Tennessee for a Living Proof Live event. And as we traveled up the interstate, we were terribly excited about three things in particular: 1) the opportunity to soak up God’s Word for a couple of days 2) the much-needed girls’ weekend away from home and 3) the moment when Beth Moore walked on stage, because quite frankly we were dying to see what she was going to wear.

We even made predictions about one of those three things, and I bet – if you try really hard – you can guess which one.

What we didn’t expect was that there was going to be a woman singing on praise team that weekend who would blow us away. Her voice was absolutely incredible, and several months later – when we saw her on “American Idol” – we found out her name: Mandisa.

And that weekend? In Knoxville? She rocked the house for Jesus like nobody’s business. She was a revelation.

Now I don’t know if you know it or not, but Miss Mandisa has a CD coming out July 31st. It’s called “True Beauty,” and a couple of days ago I got a copy of the first single – “Only The World” – in the mail.

I just adore it.

In fact, I can’t stop singing it. And dancing when I sing. Truth be told, I think it’s impossible to listen to this song without dancing just a little bit.

Even if you’re Baptist.

Oh, I kid because I’m Baptist, too. And come on, now – you know that sometimes you just need to BREAK IT DOWN, regardless of denomination, age, hair color, or dancing ability. Don’t fight the feelin’, internets.

Anyway. Where was I? Something about a song?

Oh yes. Of course.

You can actually hear a stream of “Only The World” here. And because I love it so much, I emailed the nice people at Mandisa’s record label to ask if I could do a little bloggy giveaway. They were kind enough to agree (thanks, Amy!) – and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

SO – if you’d like a chance to win one of Mandisa’s snazzy new CD-singles (there are two songs on the CD, and I definitely want to do another giveaway for the full CD when it comes out at the end of July), all you have to do is comment, making doubly sure that your email address is accurate. And just for kicks, since “Only The World” is a perfect get-that-puppy-on-the-iPod-and-go-for-a-walk-right-now song, tell me your all-time favorite workout / let-it-all-hang-out song. What puts some pep in your step as soon as you hear it?

I’ll turn off comments Monday afternoon (July 2nd) around 5 central time, and then I’ll draw to see which fifteen people win THE FABULOUS PRIZES.

I’m so excited to be able to share this with y’all – it’s a happy little summertime treat.

And now I think I’ll go listen to Miss Mandisa on my iPod and dance a little more.

Alex will be absolutely thrilled.

  1. With all the great Christian artists mentioned above (all of whom I love–especially STOMP by KFranklin)I have to admit what is on my iPod workout playlist…

    Jumpin Jumpin — Destiny’s Child
Men in Black — Will Smith
Mambo No. 5 — Lou Bega
Whoop There it Is — Tag Team
Take a Chance on Me — ABBA
Black Horse & A Cherry Tree — KT Tunstall

  2. I’d never heard of her before, but I like that clip… sign me up!

The music that makes me get up and move is my old Erasure CD’s… pretty much any song… but especially “Take A Chance On Me”. I frequently play it while cleaning house. My 4 year-old refers to it as “mommy’s cleaning music”.

  3. This is awesome! I love the Chris Tomlin CD Arriving. It has a great balance of fast and slow songs to use when walking. Also, Walking on Sunshine is a fun one.
Thanks for spreading the word about Mandisa. I’m so excited for her!

  4. This is so out of character for me, but my fav workout song is “Here I go again” by Whitesnake. Because it was popular back in 1987, when I was still skinny. I call it my “skinny music”. I would be love to have Mandisa’s new CD, but alas, I will not be able to classify it as “skinny music”…

  5. I Love it! What great music. I’m so glad you shared because even if I don’t win I plan to go and get me one of those CD’s when it comes out in July. My 3 littlest are toddler song lovers and my 2 oldest are teen music…(they’re at the Celebrate Freedom concert this weekend). I need something my own speed. :-) Thanks for sharing. :-)

  6. PICK ME! Work, workout? What’s that? :-)

I have you know, Baptist DO dance, in fact, the Chairman of our Deacon Board AND his wife were both dancing with the teenagers at a recent outdoor event for the youth, but the, uh, older adults were also invited to be a part of it. It was GREAT to see all of them down there in front of the stage dancing away! If King David danced before the Lord, I suppose we can do the same. PTL I hope this doesn’t shake your faith to know that a Deacon–the Chairman–actually dances.

  7. Pick me, pick me! :)
I love Mandisa! Thanks for letting me know about her CD. Have a great 4th!

  8. I LOVE MANDISSA! She was fabulous on American Idol. What a testimony that girl has! My favorite song that she performed on AI was Shakles. SHE.ROCKED. It just so happens that Shakles is one my most favorite anything songs. Can’t wait till her album comes out! A little sample now would oh so exciting!

  9. Tammy H says:

Put my name in please! :)

  10. My favorite workout music is whatever is on at Curves when I happen to darken the door. I even thought enrolling Oldest Child would get me there more – wrong: (

If I’m walking, I steal DH’s ipod and listen to 70’s rock.

  11. No brainer…
Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gee’s!

Makes me want to put on lipstick!

  12. Even David danced for the Lord! As a Pentacostal, I can highly recommend rocking to the Lord.
put my name on the list, I hope I win!

  13. Jesslev says:

Luv me some Mandisa now- She rocked on Idol! Can’t wait to get my hands on that CD! I’ll be jamming in my car singing loud all over Mississippi!

  14. I am definitely great. I loved Mandisa on American Idol. And I just thought she was so great….how good her character is!

  15. Omg!! I love Mandisa! Her song “Only the World” rocks! Can’t wait to get it on my iPod!!;)

  16. OOOO…Mandisa was my favorite on American Idol. She loves Jesus and I love her voice. I like to work out to Sweet Home Alabama…because I am from Alabama…but I live in Texas. That should explain it all.

  17. Mandisa is awesome! Thanks for working this cool giveaway for your bloggy buds.

I grew up a church of Christ girl, talk about non-dancers :o)!!!

  18. As a former Baptist I’ll sign up! I used to go to Curves and just loved some of the country re’makes they did there. And thei rpraise and woship stuff. Mostly I jsut don’t work out, so I don’t have a favorite work out song! Chasing three boys around 5 acres with a 4 month old baby girl is plenty of work out for me!

  19. i want it i want it i want it!!!!!!!!!

  20. I am so out of the loop on current music. But I love Petra – “Beyond Belief” (the song and the whole CD) can really get me going on the treadmill. Also when I hear CiCi Winans “Anybody Wanna Pray With Me” it is impossible for me to sit still.

  21. What’s that song from FlashDance?? (I wasn’t born then…I think that’s the movie). “What a feeling….taking over…” I love that song. In my head I’m working out on the treadmill so I can look good in a big sweatshirt, tights and legwarmers too!

  22. Wow, thats a lot of comments. I really liked watching Mandisa on American Idol cuz I felt like I was sort of routin for the “hometeam” on the “mainstream” if you know what I mean. Really I just thought what you said about Baptist was so funny I wanted to comment. I am one too, and sometimes when we are on our 15th chorus of the same dullll song I just want to scream and wonder what would happen if I ran up and down the isle clapping and singing like I want to. We take ourselves to seriously sometimes! As for the song that just makes me get up and MOVE every time is unfortunatly a Christmas song, All I want for Christmas is you by Mariah Carey, who I don’t even like but her version of that song just does it for me. Anywho, love your blog, sorry for the babling. P.S. Oh yeh, on Beth Moore, for the last 3 years in my womens bible study we have done one of her studies….love her to death…but we are always so distracted by her hair (in some of the older studies) we laugh a lot before she makes us cry.

  23. Put me in, Coach! Central Texas loves her BooMama!

  24. She does some duets with tobymac on his latest album…and we love it!

(and we’re baptist, and I dance)

    Enter me!

  25. Lisening to my MP3 player while in the prone position probably doesn’t count under the “workout” definition, but some favorites are: Alison Krauss, Martina McBride, Third Day, Sarah McLachlan, Brian Doerksen & Jeremy Camp. Gotta go so I can do my “cool down”. Don’t want to “over do it”.

  26. Sure you Baptists can dance when you hear that song. But can us Presbyterians??? That’s the real question.

You probably don’t even know this song, but if I hear “The Bird” from back in my college days, my arms start just flapping on their own, and before I know it, I am getting down!

  27. She is on tour now with a few other artists. If I hear of a date near you, I’ll email you.

  28. Jessica says:

One of my favorites is “Summertime” by Kenny Chesney. I recently started forcing myself to listen to country so I could relate better to the students I teach, and what do you know? I really like it!

Thanks for the opportunity to win the CD!

  29. I need this cd because I am Mandisa’s biggest fan!!!!! As for some good Christian jammin’? TobyMac’s new cd (which MANDISA sings on–oh yes, she does :)!!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  30. me me me me :) Youre the best boomama! xoxo melzie

  31. Lisa D. says:

Oh, comment I must to have a chance to win me some Mandisa music! I will never forget when precious Simon Cowell told her that singing “Shackles” on American Idol was self-serving. Hello? Shackles? SELF-serving? I don’t think so! Thanks for the contest, BooMama.

  32. Butterbean says:

What a song! Mandisa has some pipes, doesn’t she? My two little girls love “Another One Bites the Dust”…hilarious, I know. Obviously, their mama was born in the early 70s! =) Also, “Lord of the Dance” & “Great Adventure” (Steven Curtis Chapman), “Big House” (Audio Adrenaline), & “What Shall We Say” (Kyle Matthews)make me pick up the walking pace!

  33. Saddle up your horses mama ’cause when Stephen Curtis gets singing the Great Adventure I am suddenly 19 and read for the ride of my life. My heart beats races just a bit quicker and I am sure that my God, who has gone on ahead of me has great things still in store – doesn’t that make you want to start running into the “Wild Blue younder of God’s amazing grace??” And Mandisa, I heard her on a station when we were in Florida sayin’ she and Melinda where friends and had sang back up together – imagine those two heart and voices tucked away at the back of the stage!?!

  34. hmmmm….so many to choose from…I think maybe a toss-up between “Into the Ocean” by Blue October and “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall:)

  35. Please add me . I love Mandisa and wtg her for not succumbing to the pressures to be what the media wants.

  36. Love, love, love Mandisa!!! A song that makes me move would be “500 miles” by Steven Curtis Chapman. It’s on his sappy love song CD – can’t think of the name of it…. definitely puts pep in my step though!!

  37. There’s this song on Jackie Velasquez’ spanish CD called “Sin ti no puedo vivir” and when we play it we all (even my hubby!) start dancing and it is so much fun! Hilarious to hear my kids trying to sing in Spanish as well.

  38. Mandisa’s songs are awesome! I also had the privilege of hearing her at a Living Proof Live event. She rocks! I couldn’t stand to pick just one song. Some of my favorite “work-out” songs on my ipod are:

    “Virtuoso” by David Phelps(Revelation CD)
“With His Love(Sing Holy)” by David Phelps
“I Choose Now” by Anthony Evans
    “Gloria” by Watermark

**FYI…After hearing “Virtuoso” and understanding its meaning (“one who is skilled with singing or with an instrument”), I’ve decided you & BigMama need to name your praise band “Virtuosi” (pural form of virtuoso…she being the skilled tambourinist and you the vocalist.

  39. Coming out of Lurkdom to say…Ooohh…I love Mandisa. My favorite get-up-and- clean-the-house song is ‘Don’t Pass Me By’ by MC Hammer.

  40. Oh yay! I just love a give-away. I never win anything, but what the hay, I’ll give it a try! I love a little Kirk Franklin on my ipod to get my feet moving. I have so many favorites it’s hard to choose! Have a great weekend!

  41. Ohhh, I’m in!

  42. What a great idea! You are so sweet! I just love Mandisa. I have the single too. Let me tell you that I like to get my grove on to most any song off of Portable Sounds CD by Toby Mac-It rocks! Mandisa is on it too! :)

  43. Love Beth Moore, her many hair care products, and her southern accent! Not to mention Godly wisdom. This “frozen chosen” also loves Nichole Nordeman, esp “Brave” and “Legacy.” U2’s “Beautiful Day” really gets me going, though. Gotta plug my childhood friend Eliot Morris too. He’s got some upbeat and child-friendly music (lives in B’ham now…Go check him out!)

  44. Mandisa was also featured on tobymac’s new album Portable Sounds- did you ever check him out?? Fav workout song? Ya know Kurt Franklin’s STOMP is a good one! “Put your hands together”

  45. Bailey's Leaf says:

From one Baptist Mama to another, good gravy girl– you wouldn’t want to see me dance no matter how good the song. Remember when Elaine danced on Seinfeld and they made fun of her? Well, that’s me. God forgot to give me dancin’ feet! I could belt it out for you, though. At least that partially makes up for a lack of limb rhythm!

  46. Count me in!
    I love Mandisa!

  47. Mandisa was my pick to win the year she was on Idol but, alas, it was not to be so. I love her and her faith and the fact that she seems to love herself and not try to fit in with the barbie dolls. Don’t let any of what I said effect your drawing in any way… :) So my favorite ‘work out’ song is “What Have I Done to Deserve This” by the Pet Shop Boys (yes, an 80’s song ~ I’m THAT old). It just seems to fit the mood I’m in when working out. Thanks for having this AWESOME contest! :)

  48. I love Mandisa – I just got home from Creation ( where I saw her live this morning! She has a beautiful voice and such a heart for the Lord! Please count me in to the drawing.

  49. I’m one of your lurkers…Love your voice in your blog!! Hmmm…Some fav get-moving songs?

“Next thing you know (13)” by Matthew West
“I know You now” by 4Him
“Made to love” by Toby Mac

  50. Melissa Heide says:

    Sweet Child Of Mine!!!!!

  51. Please add me…she has been to my church here in Ky for a Women’s Conference ….she is totally awesome. And so beautiful…..I shook her hand and she smiled the prettiest smile you have ever seen. Later we saw her on American Idol…..I voted for her every week. She is such a wonderful gift to everyone.

  52. Ok, this is embarressing. But I’ve worked out to Ace of Base. *hiding* It’s fabulous. I used to actually really like the soundtrack from the Last of the Mohicans. And now, I like “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley and “Cherry Tree” by KT Tunstell. Pick me, pick me!

  53. “This Is The Life” by PCD
    “500 Miles” by SCC

Mandissa is a real “God’s Girl”! So glad to hear about her upcoming CD.

  54. I love your blog…yeah for garage sales….I read when I workout.:)

  55. I would love to win the CD, naturally, but mainly wanted to let you know about my review of her book, “Idol Eyes”…just click here

  56. Ok, I’ll comment not only because i want to win but because I comment here anyway once in awhile because you’re so darn funny and enjoyable. it’s true….and not just because there is a prize…which you are prolly gonna random draw for anyway :)

  57. Her record label sent me a copy of this to review too and I confess I haven’t even listened to it yet, I’ve been so busy. But after reading this, the minute Rob wakes up, I’m putting this in the CD player. So don’t include me in your giveaway since I have a copy. And thanks for reminding me I need to get my review done. Somehow, it got buried in my “to do” pile!

  58. I love “O Praise Him” by the David Crowder Band. Its the first one on my worksout CD and it gets me quick steppin on the elliptical right away!

Thanks for doing this little giveaway!

  59. Hi BooMama! I love your blog; it always makes me laugh!!!

My favorite song to put “pep in my step” is Cherry Bomb by John Mellencamp, or was he still “the Cougar” back then…????

I’d love to win the Mandisa CD!

  60. Well, I love R.O.C.K. in the USA and the YMCA song and a little Steven Curtis Chapman and some Beach Boys. I have to keep it eclectic or I get bored…lol.

I can’t wait to hear more from her.

  61. YAY for Mandisa! I just loved her on AI. Count me in for the giveaway!!!

  62. I love Mandisa! Count me in too please.
Lately I’ve listened to Carrie Underwood while walking but ordered a Jersey Boys cd from the broadway musical and I think it’s pretty peppy!

  63. Nichole says:

Love, Love, LOVE her! Please include me!

  64. I just played the stream of “Shackles” on my laptop at the breakfast table, and my 5-yr-old jumped down from her seat and started to boogie!

    We love Mandisa!

  65. I have been SO thrilled with the Christian talent showing up on AI these past seasons… I was so bummed when Mandisa left! And I think Melinda ROCKS, by the way!
Only the anonymity of the internet lets me admit that it’s N’Sync music that I love to crank up when the kiddies aren’t around, it always makes me want to dance! (very embarrassed, yes I am!)
Lately I love to crank Chris Daughtry, too.

  66. for workouts i like mandisa’s “shackles”, and the curves christian workout cd’s.

  67. suzanne says:

I, too, love Mandisa’s single! My daughter and I even dance in the car when we hear it! Currently her song is my first dance choice but I also like, “My Redeemer Lives”, by Hillsong when I’m on a treadmill. BTW, I’m thrilled to know that you’re a Bulldogs fan. I still have my cowbell from when I went to a State game MANY MOONS AGO! My dad went to State and my mom went to the “W” back when it was only women. Go Dogs!!

  68. Coming out of lurkdom because, well, what better reason than something FREE to make me rear my lurky head?!?! And I have to admit, I don’t know Mandisa from, well, lots of other artists…but I do know that between you and Heather, my socks have been completely blessed off since I found y’all a couple of months ago, and I’ve decided I’d pretty much trust either one of you on just about anything! So if you say she’s the cat’s meow, then I say “Girl! Send me that CD!”

Oh, and not that I would really know from recent personal experience, but if I WERE to get a wild hair to work out, I think (Don’t laugh, y’all) I’d want to do it with Ricky Martin. What can I say? I’m married to a Puerto Rican. And I HAVE to set a good example for my kids, don’t I?

  69. me too!!!

  70. I was so proud of Mandisa last year when she sang Shackles on AI. And I would love to add her singles to my music collection!

  71. I love the Sarah Groves song The Boxer for walking and working out…it is so motivating and the tempo is perfect for a fast walk or slow jog (for those who are so inclined!)

  72. Hmmmm… I do hate to admit this, but I used to do some serious working out to a Prince CD; can’t even remember the name of the songs much less the CD title. I really didn’t know the lyrics and probably had no business listening to it, but it had a great beat to work out to!

  73. Huge Mandisa fan from the Philippines right here (literally and figuratively)! :D “Only the World” is #1 on my personal Top 20 right now (click on my name to get to the chart), and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. Pick me, pick me! LOL

One of my favorite workout songs is a track by David Crowder*Band called “Turkish Delight,” off the “Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia.” It’s a great, funky, toe-tapping track that is reminiscent of early Jamiroquai and that new Maroon5 song, “Makes Me Wonder.” Real fun.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment, BooMama!

  74. “Get these shackles off my feet, so I can dance” Shackles by Mary Mary- All time fave get-your-groove on in the car song and forget about the fact your in a glass box!

  75. Woo Hoo! Enter me please :0)

  76. I don’t have a blog but I’d love to play! Count me in.

  77. I heard “Only the World” for the first time on KSBJ–the major Christian Radio station here in Houston–back in May at the end of school. Such a great, great song!!!! I actually heard Matthew West talk about writing it for Mandisa when they did an interview one morning. GREAT SONG. . .hope I get picked. . .and LOVE your thrift store/estate sale finds.

  78. I. WANT. THAT. CD!

I want to turn it up real loud as I cruise around town in my…oh, minivan.

  79. I don’t have a favorite work out CD because, unfortunately, I never work out.

My kids and I like to jump around to YMCA.

    Does that count?????

  80. Oh yeah, Mandisa! Sweet sweet sound! Oh my, a favorite tune? There are too many. I love music. But, I suppose to list a few are “You are the Sun” by Sara Groves and I also love a little Aretha Franklin too!
    Thanks BooMama! Fun, fun!

  81. o.k. I’ll take a shot, even though there are a bajillion people vying for this prize. Phenomenon by Rita Springer totally rocks my face off. Oh, and You Are Good on the Lakewood cd. Bring on the funky!

  82. My absolute favorite upbeat song is “Ants Marching” by Dave Matthews Band, but it has to be from the Live at Red Rocks album. There is no explanation (other than perhaps it was something I listened to when I was younger and even a song I picked in advance to listen to during the toughest part of labor with my second daughter).

I loved Mandisa. She has an incredible voice and I’m really looking forward to hearing her whole album – and was tickled when I heard her single on the christian radio station a couple weeks ago.

  83. Oh, I love me some free giveaway, especially to something so good.

“And come on, now – you know that sometimes you just need to BREAK IT DOWN, regardless of denomination, age, hair color, or dancing ability.”

There’s more truth in that one sentence than I can even comment.

  84. That sounds great – count me in on the drawing!

  85. Oh, girl, this song is a blast! You’ve got to listen to you some Nicole C. Mullen! Her “Everyday People” CD is rockin’! One of my favs is the song “This This” and my kids love to jam to “The One”

  86. Jazzercise had a routine to “Unwritten” that I just loved.

Even though it’s not a Christian song per se, it always reminds me that “today is where [my] book begins,” and I can write it following Christ’s example.

It was a great arm routine too ;0)

  87. I would love to enter!

Also, there are so many “make me move” songs I could pick it’s hard to single out one, but I love Revolution by Kirk Franklin. :)

  88. Love me some Mandisa! She was robbed, i tell ya! But I’m sure she’ll do better out on her own.

What makes me want to work out? It’s a little silly, but any time I hear any of the songs that are on “Sweatin’ to the Oldies,” it makes me wanna put on that VHS tape and start jumpin’ around.

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  89. Yay! A giveaway — I never win! But anyway, I’ll enter … just to torture myself and sit by my email waiting for the WIN notification.

I like to rock out to just about anything fast by Salvador — or Mercy Me — or Third Day — see — I’m being PC right now.

  90. Oooh! I LOVE it! I’m thinking I need to clean house to Mandisa’s version of Shackles. That’ll get me moving!!!

  91. I was just listening to Majesty by Charlie Hall, and it is a holy headbangin ballad for sure! It is on the Passion: How Great is Our God cd.

And on the opposite end of the spectrum…Gwen Stefani’s The Sweet Escape always puts a spring in my step.

I love Mandisa. I was so excited when she did the Believing God hand motions on AI!

Hope I made it in time for the contest!!!
