American Idol – Top 9

All righty. I’m a little pressed for time tonight, but I’m watching Idol because I don’t want to be left out of everybody’s post-show conversations and comments tomorrow. So basically I’m totally caving to peer pressure. BECAUSE I’M JUST THAT MATURE.

Aaron Kelly – “The Long and Winding Road” – Honestly? I was a little bored. It was just so SLOW.

Katie Stevens – “Let It Be” – That was actually really pretty. It was very understated – but at the same time it was full of emotion. She really surprised me with the originality of the arrangement and the strength of her performance. I liked it a lot. And I liked her tights, too.

Andrew Garcia – “Can’t Buy Me Love” – I couldn’t decide if he put a big band or a rockabilly twist on this song – or maybe some strange combination of the two. I definitely thought it was one of his better performances, and I loved what he did with the bridge of the song. The whole thing wasn’t as moving as Katie’s performance, but it was fun.

Michael Lynche – “Eleanor Rigby” – There was a whole lot going on in this performance: the strings on the stage, the moody lighting, the arrhythmic delivery and the big medallion on the back of Michael’s jacket. It almost felt like a Meatloaf song – overly orchestrated and very dramatic. He’s talented, no doubt – and I don’t think he lost any momentum tonight.

Crystal Bowersox – “Come Together” – Good grief I love her. And I’m almost ready for the show to be over so that I can buy a ticket to one of her shows and see her perform live, the end.

Tim Urban – “All My Lovin'” – Oh my. That was some weird mix of Greg Brady and Troy Bolton and David Cassidy and Conrad Birdie. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Casey James – “Jealous Guy” – I’ve never heard of this song in my life, but I really liked Casey’s version – it was heartfelt and tender and had sort of a John Mayer-ish/Marc Broussard-ish vibe to it. But could somebody explain to me what’s going on with Casey’s hair? I really like it when he rocks the ponytail. Not that the ponytail is what matters the most, of course. I just miss it.

Siobhan Magnus – “Across the Universe” – Do y’all remember Paula Cole? I realized tonight that Siobhan’s voice reminds me a little bit of Paula Cole. That being said, this performance just made me want to kick. I didn’t connect with it on any level. It was almost like looking at a piece of art that I know is supposed to be impressive – but then realizing that when push comes to shove, I just don’t get it. However, I’m grateful she didn’t scream.

Lee DeWyze – “Hey Jude” – This was a more straightforward arrangement than I thought it would be, and honestly I missed the original twist that he put on his performance last week. It was a decent cover, but it wasn’t all that special. And I didn’t really get the bagpipe. I love his voice, though, and I want to hear more from him.

Best of the night: Crystal
Worst of the night: Tim or Siobhan
Should go: Tim
Will go: Tim or Siobhan

What did y’all think?

  1. I don’t get Siobhan, either. She’s just a mess. Even when the judges like her I think she’s terrible. Her first screaming performance had its moments, but since then I’ve been mystified at how well she’s done. I hope the rest of America gets sick of her soon, because I’m ready for her to get off my TV.

Everyone else was meh tonight, even Crystal. Id did like Casey, but I always like Casey — he wasn’t spectacular tonight. Lee was okay, as was Crystal.

Admittedly, The Beatles aren’t my favorite. Okay, fine, I don’t like them at all. I don’t spread that fact around for fear of what people might do. I didn’t admit it to my husband until after we were married, because my sister had a boyfriend once in college who actually broke up with her when she admitted to it. (Out of the four kids in my family, not a one of us likes The Beatles. Oddly, our parents love them. Genetics are weird.) Anyway, I think I would’ve been more entertained tonight if it had been a different theme, so my whole impression probably skews negative. I hope Tim goes home this week, at any rate. Poor guy is being given way too much false hope, although he does seem like a genuinely nice kid. Just not a nice kid with a good voice.

  2. Aw, why I am so bummed to read your take on Siobhan? She was one of my favorites tonight. We agreed on almost everyone else though!

  3. If you’re pressed for time, just watch the last five minutes so you can catch the recap of all the songs. That’ll save you an hour or two.

  4. I agree with you on Siobhan, I am a little confused by her but I think she will go a long way in this thing. I am very glad she didn’t scream. It occurs to me that after tonight’s performance she will have to scream again next week. I think Casey did a beautiful job and I want to watch it again. Lee, not as good as last week but still I love him too. And Crystal, I agree with yo on her too. I’m ready to just go see her. End of sentence.

Thank yo for link us together again this year. Where is everybody though? Do you ever wonder that?

  5. Aw, I kinda like Siobhan. :-) I appreciated that she toned it down a bit tonight. But perhaps if this was the first time I’d heard her, I might not be so impressed.

Loved Lee, minus the bagpiper. Loved Crystal, of course. Loved Casey. Loved Big Mike. I like Meatloaf, what can I say? And I was also pleasantly surprised by Katie’s performance.

All in all, a good night!

  6. I thought Aaron was awful. He never found the key and looked absolutely terrified. I really think he’s gone.

Siobahn is just scary. I’m over her and ready to move on to another scream or two. Her clothes are just too scary for a midwestern housewife like me.

My favorite was Katie and that surprises me. The youngest girl totally got the Beatles. Love that.

I think Aaron or Tim will go; but I wish it were Siobahn.

  7. Christine says:

Was it me or did Casey get a little teary eyed?

    I loved Katie last night.

    Aaron horrified me.

  8. I do think Crystal is miles beyond the others with her talent. HOWEVER, Casey is the only one that I’d pay money to see. The End.

  9. I agree with you! Tim or Siobhan should go home. I’m not that into Michael either. Sorry. And Aaron is just boring all the time. I guess I’ve revealed my top five, huh?

  10. I’m going to write my post up during the results show like I did last week, but I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks Siobhan is at risk. After 2 pretty bad/off performances, I think her time is coming. I would be VERY surprised if she’s not in bottom 3.

She’s got a great voice, but I never connected with her.

  11. Tim and that grin are just too cornball…he can’t help it I know but I see him in a tv show someday, not AI

Loved Katie. And her personality is cute…I loved the phone bill comment : )

Crystal rocked it as always. Siobhan is too quirky for me but I too am thankful there was no screaming. She should totally do that Paula Cole -I Don’t Wanna Wait song. Wasn’t it the theme to Dawson’s Creek. Siobhan doesn’t strike me as a Dawson’s Creek fan.

I love Lee, Crystal, Casey, Mike and Katie. They are my top 5.

  12. #1. Casey
    #2. Crystal
    #3. Katie

HAHAHA! Brady is the nickname my husband and I have given Tim! Only we’re thinking more like Peter.

Who I want to go home tonight: Tim or Siobhan.

And, was it just me or was the audience really flat last night. Dead. Dead. Lots of awkward silence and then loud outbursts by a handful of people. Strange. Maybe Paige opened up the show and left them feeling a bit underwhelmed. *crickets, crickets, crickets*

  13. Crystal is just in a different category! LOVE HER! I did think Casey’s performance was fantastic as well but yes, his hair was distracting so I had to look away while he sang and it was gooood. Katie impressed last night as well. The tweens are the ones keeping Tim alive (and Aaron as well) – image of the crying, squishy- faced pony tail girl of the Sanjaya season appears. And bye the bye, I hate to say it but I’m kind of glad Buzz was voted of DWTS because I couldn’t take one more minute of it – no offense to Buzz and I do think he is awesome and brave and a true piece of critical American history but dancing??!!!

  14. LOve this summary. Thank you. So nice to read the day after.

I have to agree. Some voices were fantastic, with your eyes closed, but they just didn’t have the stage power of Adam Lambert.

  15. When I saw the bagpiper, I thought it looked like he was sneaking up on him. It was the camera angle. Ellen’s comment about him being seperated from a parade cracked me up.
I love the Beatles, so I’m picky on these nights.

  16. I surprisingly enjoyed Katie. I also liked Big Mike, but I always like him. And Casey was so good I watched him twice. It sounded very Tesla-ish to me, and I… loved. it.

I really hope Siobhan goes home. Her dorky glasses and outrageous clothing choices distract me. And I wouldn’t mind Tim going home either. He’s a Disney Channel star if I ever saw one.

  17. Add me to the list of people who don’t get Siobahn. I think she has a good voice, but I don’t like the sound of it. Not to mention that when she’s just talking I feel like her complete lack of energy sucks all the life right out of the room.

I was just meh on Mike, but I agree that he’ll continue in the competition.

And Tim is not the greatest, but I’d rather see him perform than Aaron. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Aaron gets the boot tonight.

  18. You didn’t mention the diggery do? I loved that! I guessing Siobhan will go this week!

  19. I agreed with everything you said, except Lee. I loved his voice last night. Ellen’s joke about the bagpipe guy getting separated from his parade was hilar!

  20. Your reaction from last night’s results were???? I was hoping you would post something. I love reading your blog. You are such a humorous writer. I ofter wonder if you are that funny in person. If so, maybe you should have your own comedy routine and speak at churches.

  21. Yeah! I’ve been looking for a mom blogger community to talk AI with! I found you through Musings of a Housewife. I look forward to coming back every week.

Boy! We were off with Big Mike, weren’t we? I linked to you were I take a guess on the Bottom 3…I had Aaron (to go), Andrew (to stay) and Tim (to be the first to sit down). 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

  22. I kinda like Siobahn, although I’m over “the scream.”

I DO NOT understand the love afair with Lee. I think his voice is a little grating, and his whole “I don’t believe in myself” thing is annoying. As for Tuesday’s perfomance, while sitting in my living room all by myself, I actually blurted out loud “What the…?” That was just all wrong. I actually found myself enjoying his performance up until that point, and then he totally lost me. That was the dumbest thing I have ever seen, and that poor bagpipe player had to feel like the biggest doofus.

With the exception of a couple of bright spots, I think this is the slowest, most boring season of Idol ever.
