A few weeks ago my friend Amanda gave me a heads up that there were some new varieties of Fig Newtons that merited my attention. I finally remembered to buy some when I was at the grocery store earlier this week, and while I think Amanda may have been talking about another new kind of Fig Newtons, I would just like to say that these?

They’re also pretty low in sugar – only 7 grams in a 3 cookie serving – and you can pretend like they’re totally healthy because, hello, 8 GRAMS OF WHOLE GRAIN.

They’d also be killer with a little cream cheese or peanut butter on them, but I’m trying to be a good girl.

Given the fact that a new skin care regimen that I was trying took me on a bit of a rollercoaster ride in December and January, I spent more than a few minutes wondering if I was going to walk through the rest of my earthly days with my skin looking like my 20-something self’s worst nightmare.

I don’t know. Call me crazy, but I feel like break-outs should be a thing of the past during this season of life. IT SEEMS ONLY FAIR.

Anyway, when I was in Houston a few weeks ago, I saw Melanie’s skin for the first time since September, and it looked FANTASTIC. I knew that she’d been using a Clairisonic Mia, and I’d been thinking for a few months about buying one for myself. When I saw what a difference it made (not that her skin looked bad before, mind you, but it just looks more vibrant now), I made up my mind once and for all and ordered a Clairisonic Mia for my own dadgum self. It was a splurge, but it’s still much less expensive than buying four or five products from an expensive skin care line. Plus, it doesn’t have to be replaced every 2-3 months like a pricey jar of moisturizer.

No kidding – my little turquoise Mia is my favorite skin care product I have ever used. It exfoliates (gently), and I can’t get over how clean my face feels – even when I’m wearing make-up. Best of all, I’m back to using my regular moisturizer (Eucerin with Q10), and it works better than ever now that my skin is finally back in proper working order.

The Mia was one of those purchases that I thought long and hard about before I ordered it, but if you have some extra gift cards sitting around – or maybe some extra birthday money – the splurge is a lot less painful. I LOVE IT.

This post by Emily is encouraging and touching and wonderful and good.

Last night I watched Smash. I hadn’t really planned to watch it, mainly because I couldn’t figure out how a drama with musical numbers wouldn’t wind up being a little awkward (Cop Rock, anyone?). As it turned out, the show is really well done, and there were a couple of things that stood out. First of all, the music is beautiful – great arrangements, pheonomenal vocals – and second of all, Katharine McPhee is excellent. I’ll definitely watch next week’s episode, and in the meantime, I’ll be annoying the people in my house by singing this song A LOT.

(The two characters in the video are auditioning to play Marilyn Monroe.)

(That bit of context might prove helpful.)

So. Anybody else have a new cookie / skin care tip / blog post / TV moment / generally fun something-or-other you’d like to share?

Fire away.

  1. I’m going to have to try those new Fig Newtons. I’m diabetic and they are actually featured in this months Diabetic Living magazine as a good snack option, cant beat that huh?!
I also might break down and try the MIA. I’m 43 and still have occasional breakouts, it’s very frustrating. I’ve spent a small fortune on about every product out there. Thanks for sharing the good news!

  2. I second the Mia. I got one last month with a gift card I had and while I was skeptical at first, it is amazing. I used to have a lot of dry patches on my skin, but they literally disappeared after two days of using it, plus my pores got smaller. Even my husband noticed how soft my skin has become. If I could easily use it over my entire body, I would.

  3. I just bought those cookies last month (because I had a coupon) hoping that it would be accepted by my husband, who I pack a lunch for and am tired of buying the same things over and over again. He loved them and I too. There are three other flavors, but the blueberry ones are great so for now I’m sticking with those!!

  4. I bought myself the same turquoise mia after reading Melanie’s post. I felt a little guilty when my daughter saw a display in Macy’s and said “you spent THAT much”, but I decided this mama was worth it ;o)

  5. I LOVE my Mia! And Smash is waiting patiently on my DVR until I have time to focus!

  6. i’m so interested in this mia product. my skin is looking sort of blah lately and though finally at 41 i’m not having bad breakouts like i used to, i feel like my skin needs help. do you really love it? any other face products you’d recommend? like something for bags under your eyes?

i did get a new purse at tj maxx that i love. it’s a bright pink, lots of good pockets and the brand is bueno for $25. that made me happy.

    • I’m a big fan of Origins GinZing for puffy eyes. I pretty much love everything Origins sells, but GinZing really helps.

  7. I’m 58 and still dealing with breakouts; it never really goes away, no matter the age. Considering a Clairisonic myself.

I posted on Melanie’s blog how much I loved the first episode of Smash. Both of my girls are in theater (one has a BFA in theater performance, the other left a ten year career in education to pursue her musical theater dream, and both are employed professionally as actors) and they both were very impressed by the show, too. It’s great to see Katharine McPhee again-she was a favorite of ours on AI-and Megan Hilty is a legitimate Broadway star. I was impressed with the writing, character development and the music. I hope it continues to be so well done.

  8. I adore my Clairisonic. I use it with Origins Checks and Balances cleanser, or sometimes with Origins Modern Friction for a little extra exfoliating action. I truly think this is the best my skin has ever looked. I used to obsess over blackheads and my shiny chin, but now I barely even see any blackheads!

  9. Oh lawsy, y’all are really pushing my buttons for this facial scrubber thing.

But I’ll say the same thing I said on Miss Mel’s blog…..I can’t quite get over the horror of taking a dad-gum brush to my face.

    A BRUSH, y’all.

Convince me, please. Tell me more about those shrinking pores, and disappearing black heads….and how soft the bristles are.

Cuz seriously, y’all, a BRUSH, really?!

  10. I don’t know if you’ve seen it yet since it was a January start up, but have you watched Alcatraz?!?!?!?! IT.IS.AWESOME. It’s made by the same people (or written or something) as LOST and it’s just so good I am GIDDY watching it! I was skeptical at first thinking “How can this show go more than one season?” BUT OH MY WORD … it’s just SO GOOD. It’s on Fox on Mondays and is only 4 or 5 episodes in, I think you can find it on the fox website or hulu or xfinity fancast if you have comcast cable. Gotta watch it from the beginning but YOU WILL BE HOOKED. It’s like a cop/mystery show but some awesome WEIRD mysteries thrown in! If you watch it, let us know what you think!!!

  11. So do you have to use a certain type of cleanser with this Mia? I am intrigued.

  12. One of my sisters is a PA at a dermatology clinic and got the women in my family Clarisonics for Christmas gifts. She said it’s also good for guys to help avoid ingrown hairs from shaving. And I’ve also used it on my elbows to get rid of dry skin. My elbows have never looked better! :-)

  13. Oh my goodness, I LOVE the Clarisonic Mia – I also have the turquoise one and it is just awesome! I ordered it off of the QVC about a year ago and have never regretted that decision. I LOVE that you can make any old cleanser feel like a million dollar bottle if you apply it with the Mia…can you tell I love it? Maybe I need to audition for the QVC as a host…or at least call in next time the Clarisonic folks are on. FYI, did you know that the Clarisonic folks also make the ultrasonic toothbrushes? Small world.

  14. Oh I LOVE the Newton Crisps! The cranberry ones taste like animal crackers a little (which I love – shhhh!) I also just tried the WhoNu cookies – they are actually good for you and taste great! I’ve had the chocolate chip (crispy, though they have a chewy version too) and the Oreo-like ones. Off of one of the boxes: Serving is 3 cookies – 150 cal. 6 g fat sodium is only 80 mg and only 11g sugar. – as much fiber as a bowl of oatmeal, as much vit. C as a cup of blueberries, as much vit. A as an 8 oz glass of tomato juice, as much vit. B12 as a cup of cottage cheese & fruit, as much vit. E as two cups carrot juice, as much iron as a cup of spinach, as much calcium and vit. D as an 8oz cup of milk – and that’s not even all the other vitamins/minerals in there! Healthy, nutritious and YUMMY! Can’t beat that with a stick! Now, I’ve got to go order me a Mia (and eat some cookies!) :)

  15. “Last Man Standing” on ABC Tuesday nights. SO funny! I am needing so great humor in my life right now and this does not disappoint.

  16. Two words … Downton Abbey!!

  17. Okay…. So I guess I’m going to have to get this Clarisonic Mia…. I have been thinking about it & this post is divine intervention!! Ha!
I do have a question though…. What kind of cleanser do you use with it… I’m currently using a Neutragena Deep Cleansing Pore cleaner….. Wonder if that would be too harsh? It has Salicylic acid in it…hmm???

  18. I refuse to watch Smash, just out of sheer spite. When you advertise to me that much, I spurn you.

  19. I want a Clarisonic Mia. Just might have to save my pennies!

  20. For those of you who aren’t quite willing to shell out for the Clarisonic, you should also check out the Olay Pro X Cleansing System. You can probably find it for around $30.

I’ll have to disclaim that I’ve used [and love] the Olay product, but not the Clarisonic, and many of the comparisons I’ve read say that it’s unlikely you’ll see $150+ difference. Anyway, just to say that there is another option–both get great reviews–which is similar but not exactly the same, and MUCH less expensive.

  21. I just got the Mia a week ago. Can’t wait to see what it does.

  22. I also loved Smash and especially that last number. Hopefully it will make up for other shows I used to love and now can’t stand– *cough* Glee*cough.

  23. I love Smash like Kristen Bell loves sloths. Can’t wait for the next episode!

  24. Ok, that’s it. I’m buying a Mia. I read Melanie’s post a few weeks ago, then a friends, last week, then yours yesterday. Last night I dreamed I got a 30% off coupon in the mail for one. Seriously? I think it is time to just go fork over the $120 and by the darned thing!

  25. I watched the Smash premiere also, and I really liked it. I loved Katherine McPhee on American Idol. When Simon chose “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for her, she killed it, so I loved that the show started with that song. I’m looking forward to this new series!

  26. Boomama,

The random products you have here brought to my scattered mind the fact that we haven’t had a BigBoo podcast recently. Any chance you and Big will treat your readers to such any time soon?
