So apparently I’ve adopted the same philosophy with daily links that I have with podcasts: once or twice a quarter will work just fine, thank you.

And for the record, the problem with the podcasts is entirely my fault. It takes me a sweet forever to edit them, and if anything happens during the editing process – something with work, something on TV, some people who want to be fed – I get completely distracted and don’t get back to the editing until weeks later. And suddenly it’s mid-November and I’m trying to string together a podcast about our pre-season football predictions.

I never claimed that time management was my strong suit, people.

Anyway, here are some links that are somewhat timely. However, if you prefer, feel free to mimic my podcasting pattern and wait a couple of months before you click on the links. That way they’ll be good and irrelevant.

– Right now you can get a one-year subscription to Southern Living or Real Simple (along with some other great magazines) for only $5 at Amazon.

Sara Groves’ new CD is also just $5, and it is DREAMY. I’m sort of annoyingly obsessed with it, frankly.

– If you’re a fan of SEC sports (AND WHY WOULDN’T YOU BE), the (free!) SEC Digital Network is a treasure. Even though it’s entirely possible that they’ll be sending me a bandwidth bill for my excessive re-watching of the 3rd quarter of the State/Ole Miss game.

– Rhoda has a great idea for Christmas centerpieces with floating candles – so simple, affordable and beautiful.

– Nester’s post about using what you have to decorate for Christmas totally inspired me.

– And finally – speaking of Nester – don’t forget this:

Christmas Tour of Homes with The Nester

Remember: there won’t be a Christmas Tour here this year. We’re touring at Nester’s instead. And it’s gonna be delightful.

Happy last day of November, y’all!

Sometimes The TV Wins

This is one of those weeks where I’m so overloaded with stories that I feel completely incapable of blogging about any of them. And you know, now that I think about it, it’s just that type of can-do attitude that led me to great success in Algebra II when I was so overwhelmed by all the formulas that I opted not to study at all.

Ineffective habits die hard, my friends.

And honestly, I know that I should sit down and try to SET THE STORIES FREE, but it’s getting late and I just got home from choir practice and there’s a “Top Chef” reunion show on the DVR. And also: TWO new episodes of “House Hunters.”

So I guess what I’m saying is interweb, I love you, but the DVR beckons. As many of you know, I have some very specific television-related goals for 2009, and I want to continue to meet those goals. Because heaven knows I can’t fall back on Algebra II if I lose my TV mojo.

Anyway, I have some links I want to share, but before I do that, here’s a picture of Alex and some of his favorite people – my parents and my mother-in-law – before they left for Grandparents’ Day at his school.

I’d like to give special recognition to my mama, who put on her sunglasses long before she ever walked outside (WAY TO ROCK IT, MAMA), and then of course Martha has on a darlin’ jacket that actually had a full-length sleeve and not a 3/4-length sleeve. But I just noticed that my mama is wearing a 3/4-length sleeve, so let’s all breathe a collective sigh of relief that the 3/4-length sleeve was in fact represented at Grandparents’ Day.

I would’ve hated for it to be left out.

Okay. Links ahoy.

– Every single time I think about Shannon and Melanie finishing their book, I smile. Every single time. I am so proud of them.

– I loved Jon’s post about “Regret Cinema” so much that I think I said “amen” after I read it.

– Shane & Shane released their new CD, Everything Is Different, yesterday. I didn’t realize the CD was out until late yesterday afternoon, and OH MY LANDS I couldn’t download it from the iTunes fast enough. Their music never disappoints. You can check out the CD here or here.

– Earlier today (at AllAccess) I blogged about something fun that’s going on next Friday. Even better: you can join the fun from the comfort of your couch. WHAT COULD BE MORE DELIGHTFUL THAN THAT?

– JMom wrote a post a couple of weeks ago that I’ve continued to think about ever since I read it. It hit me right where I’m living.

The Compassion bloggers are headed to El Salvador this Sunday. Please keep them in your prayers!

And now, my “Top Chef” / “House Hunters” chariot awaits.

See y’all tomorrow!

Assorted Goodness

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a daily links post because, well, it’s been awhile. Which means that maybe I shouldn’t call them “daily links.” Maybe I should call them “bi-weekly links.” Or maybe I should just quit worrying about what to call them and just put “random” words into “quotes” because it makes me “laugh” whether the “links” are “daily” or, you know, “not.”

Anyway. Since I haven’t been doing the daily links posts, I thought it was high time for me to make a list of some things that are bringing me great joy right now. These things don’t offer eternal joy, mind you, but they’ll certainly do in a pinch when it’s 7:00 in the morning and I have crevasses under my eyes and I look in the mirror and wonder what happened to the 19 year-old girl who DIDN’T EVEN HAVE TO USE MOISTURIZER.

Of course, the lack of moisturizer during my late teens might just explain my current crevasses. But I digress.

1) Last night I met some friends for supper, and as soon as I walked in the restaurant, my friend Leigh looked at me and said, “DO YOU HAVE A BUMP-IT IN YOUR HAIR?”

You just know that’s a true friend, don’t you? When you skip any initial how-are-you pleasantries and jump straight into hey! what’s going on with your hair?

Well, I did not in fact have a Bump-It in my hair because I have not ordered any product from an infomercial since I ordered Richard Simmons’ Deal-A-Meal cards back in graduate school. In retrospect the fact that I thought I could adhere to the Deal-A-Meal plan is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS considering that at least twice a week I would join my friends at a place called The District, where we would order fried cheese with Ranch dressing. And loaded potato skins. Also with Ranch dressing.

And do you know what you would not in fact find on Deal-A-Meal cards?

  • fried cheese
  • Ranch dressing
  • loaded potato skins
  • more Ranch dressing

Not to mention the fact that I would’ve never – NEVER – finished a meal with my grad school buddies and said, “Now if y’all will just pardon me for a sec, I need to pull out my little vinyl carrying case and move my Deal-A-Meal cards into their appropriate columns.”

I also loved how the Deal-A-Meal cards tried to look like Trivial Pursuit cards so that just in case you didn’t want your friends to know that you were on a diet, you could fake them out by making them think that you were carrying around a PERSONAL TRIVIA GAME. Which is SO much better than admitting that you’re dieting.

Where was I? Something about a Bump-It? And I made it all the way to Deal-A-Meal? From one non-essential hyphenated infomercial product to another?

Sweet mercy. It is not easy to walk around with this level of crazy.

ANYWAY, there was no Bump-It in my head. But I did discover an exciting, new-to-me hair product at the drugstore, and in the week since I finally figured out how to apply it, I have achieved some serious volume in the crown area, girls.

The trick is that you have to pick up a section of damp hair and then lightly spray it on both sides. BOTH SIDES. I cannot even tell you how key the both-side-spraying is. And once you perfect your spraying methods, just get ready – because people are going to be asking you if you have a Bump-It on your head.

2) Another recent drugstore find is . I bought it a few weeks ago, and I LOVE IT. The colors are great – especially if you have fair skin and have trouble finding darker-colored eyeshadows that don’t make you look like a raccoon. I’ve also noticed that this particular brand seems to last a bit longer than other ones I’ve tried lately. Delightful.

(By the way and in the interest of clarity: I’m just linking to this stuff because I love it. I make approximately zero certified American dollars if you happen to make a purchase as a result of the links. Just FYI.)

3) Last year I got a wee bit obsessed with a praise and worship CD by a guy named Daniel Renstrom. He’s an independent artist who’s a worship leader in North Carolina – a friend of a friend of mine from Baton Rouge – and it is my personal belief that he is STINKIN’ GIFTED. I absolutely love his lyrics and his melodies, and today he’s releasing a Christmas CD.

People, listen to me: IT IS FABULOUS. There’s a version of “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” that I am hoping beyond all hope we get to sing at our church this Christmas. And there’s an original song called “Comfort Ye” that will settle way down deep in your heart and stay with you awhile.

The album is available today on iTunes, and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s called On The Incarnation, and it’s not just Christmas music – it’s praise and worship music for Christmas. Quadruple love it.

4) Finally, this:

HOW PROUD IS THE INTERNET OF REE?

SO PROUD.

In fact, I’m so proud that I may have to go eat some fried cheese to celebrate.

And dip it in Ranch dressing. OF COURSE.

– First things first: I haven’t watched the wedding episode of “The Office” yet. I KNOW. But it was late when we got to Memphis last Thursday night, and by the time we ate supper and got settled, we missed it. I’m just sick about it but hoping to get caught up via DVR tonight or tomorrow.

– The reason I haven’t written a “real” post here today is because I used up my allotted daily sentence quotient over at AllAccess. It’s a post about something I learned this past weekend in Memphis.

Melanie and I watched this video Saturday afternoon and bemoaned the fact that we weren’t in college when “Hey Ya!” was popular because it’s one of the best dance songs ever. But unfortunately it would have been unseemly for us to carry our newborns into a frat house back in 2003 just because we wanted to break it down to a little OutKast.

Edited to add: here’s the OutKast video.

Anyway, I know the video is a few years old, and I know half the world has seen it. But still. It’s a YouTube classic.

– I visited Corky’s BBQ not once but twice this past weekend, GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST. Corky’s puts (delicious) sauce and cole slaw on their BBQ sandwiches, and it’s my absolute favorite. Melanie had never eaten slaw on her BBQ sandwich before, and I think it’s safe to say that her life is forever changed.

I’m SUCH a Corky’s fan, but I realize that BBQ is a very personal preference. What’s your favorite?

– Tina at Antique Mommy has written the ten commandments of entertaining. She offers some mighty valuable advice. And I wish I’d read it about ten years ago when I was so exhausted by the time company came over that I didn’t have nearly as much fun as I should have.

– I’ve seen the commercials for Edible Arrangements for years, but I wasn’t really sure how the fruit would hold up during delivery, and I wondered how it would taste. WELL. Last week some sweet friends sent me an arrangement of fruit dipped in chocolate, and OH MY WORD AT THE TASTY. I can’t even tell you how much we’ve enjoyed it.

– Do you know what else is delicious? This cake. Just keep a phone nearby because you’re going to need to call an ambulance to help you after you go into your sugar coma. It’ll be totally worth it, though, and you’ll probably want to offer a piece of cake to your friendly paramedic.

– Okay. So I know this is totally bizarre, but a friend sent us this video Friday night, and we laughed until we cried.

I honestly have no idea why it’s so funny. But oh, it makes me laugh.

– Finally, for all you Office fans: yesterday my bloggy friend Rutheee emailed me a link to Jim and Pam’s wedding site. CAN’T WAIT!

So. How about some links? And some free musical goodness, perhaps?

OKAY!

– Amy at Bailey’s Leaf is hosting a crock pot recipe fest. You can add a link to your crockpot recipes and pick up some new recipes while you’re at it. Big crockpot fun in store.

– Today at AllAccess I shared some Martha-related news that might make you happy if you enjoy a Martha-related story.

– Here’s yet another reminder to be oh-so-careful about the information you share on the interweb.

– A couple of weeks ago I found out that Chynna Phillips (of Wilson Phillips fame) is part of a new Christian music duo called Chynna & Vaughan. Now I don’t know about y’all, but I LOOOOOOOOVED Wilson Phillips when I was younger, and I longed for hair as sassy and blonde as Chynna’s. In fact, the “Hold On” video was instrumental in helping me set some early-90s hair goals. And for that I’m forever grateful.

Anyway. Right now you can download Chynna & Vaughan’s new single, “One Reason,” for the low, low price of FREE. It says on the website that there are only 1,000 free downloads available, so strike while the bandwidth is hot, my friends.

Have a great Thursday, y’all!

p.s. Please know that I’m not telling you about the free song link because someone is going to drop off bags of shiny quarters at my house tomorrow morning as a thank you. Nobody is paying me to talk about this music. I just link because I love.

p.p.s. And I hope you enjoy it.

p.p.p.s. The end.
