You Can Imagine My Surprise

Okay so I really do have one more giveaway to do – and if I don’t get it posted tonight, I’ll get it posted tomorrow – but my brain needs for me to compose some sentences that are not connected to fabulous prizes so that I can tell you about something that has had a profound impact on the life of my little family.

Here’s the deal. I have always been a vanilla ice cream girl. I don’t usually like ice cream with swirls or chocolate covered things or chunks of stuff. If I’m really feeling crazy I’ll put some strawberries on top of my PLAIN VANILLA – or maybe just a little bit of chocolate syrup – but by and large I don’t want to taste any wacky flavor combinations. Just some old school homemade vanilla.

However.

HOWEVER.

Over the last two weeks, everything has changed. My husband picked out some ice cream one night when we were at the grocery store, and even though I was skeptical – even though I couldn’t fathom why he wouldn’t buy a pint of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla for me and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Chunk for him – he branched out. He broadened our ice cream horizons. And our lives will never be the same.

All because of this.

PEOPLE. COME ON, NOW.

It’s FANTASTIC.

And honestly, I can’t figure out why I like it. It’s chocolate ice cream (not a fan), it has stuff mixed in it (not a fan) and it’s full of nuts (typically a fan – but not when they’re in ice cream). But I’m telling you: there’s something about the flavor and the texture that just delights me.

I mean, right now? While I’m sitting in a chair in my house and typing on my computer? Just thinking about that Nutty Chocolate ice cream makes me want to clap my hands. It also makes me want to drive to the Publix and pick up a 1/2 gallon of Nutty Chocolate. But I won’t do that since I am the epitome of self-discipline and restraint.

Stop laughing.

Anyway, even though I will always be loyal to my Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla, I feel a shift in my ice cream perspective, a sense of adventure in my ice cream spirit. And I owe it all to Nutty Chocolate. I am forever grateful.

So. What’s your favorite ice cream?

  1. Vanilla, of course.

But basically I’ve never met an ice cream I didn’t like.

  2. bluebell homemade vanilla but I really haven’t found many ice creams I don’t like…
Speaking of nuts…I bought a can of cinn. sugar pecans in the nut section the other day and they are wonderful!!! almost as good as when you make them yourself in the oven…

  3. I have had a similar experience, but my new discovery is Haagen Dazs dulce de leche. Truly divine.

  4. My husband works for Blue Bell and he is sold on Moolineum Crunch. And Blackberry Cobbler. Yum!

  5. B & J’s Chunky Monkey. Angels wept the day this was created.

  6. Coldstone Peanut Butter Perfection and they also have this delicious Banana Ice Cream and I love to mix in Graham Cracker Crust, fudge and strawberries! I thought we were on the same wavelength with the whole love of bacon thing, but how can you only like plain vanilla ice cream. You need to branch out more!

  7. Single Mama says:

I’m so jealous! I’m a displaced Texan in a midwestern state WITHOUT Blue Bell. I seriously considered having it overnighted to me when I was pregnant – but I couldn’t stomach the $100/4 cartons.

    Lucky girl!

  8. I have to vote Moose or Turtle tracks. Nothing else will do. I can’t believe you are a plain Jane! So glad you’ve come to the dark side.

  9. Blue Bell Moolenium is absolutely the best thing you will put in your mouth!! BAR NONE! I eat so much of it I feel the need to go to confession (and I’m a Baptist)!!!

    Try it…you’ll love it!!

  10. Safeway’s GooGoo Cluster: milk chocolate, marshmallow fluff, caramel and chocolate covered peanuts? please.

  11. Ha! I just did an entire post about my love of ice cream. Seriously. i. am. an. ice. cream. aholic. There is an empty Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino and an empty Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie sitting beside me right now. (to be fair, they both only had about six spoonfuls left. promise) But my all time favorite? Haagen Dazs peanut butter chocolate. here’s my post if you really care . . .:) http://highfam.blogspot.com/2009/08/hello-my-name-is-laura-beth-and-i-am.html

  12. BooMama,

I have to leave a comment since you are talking Blue Bell. I am Kat, the girl, who used to live right next door to Martha. By the i saw her today ;). Anyway, I stopped by Martha’s a couple of weeks ago and she was going on and on about her new refrigerator and showing me the compartments and such… But the funny part was, she opened the freezer and said, “And look here…is this not PERFECT for my Blue Bell? (it was a little niche at the top with some vanilla Blue bell sitting there) It’s perfect, just perfect, like it was made for it.” and then she said, “i had to have it. i knew it was time b/c with my old one…the freezer wasn’t good and my Blue Bell just WASN’T holding up anymore …And you know i can’t have that (as she got real still and had a serious look on her face)” :)

  13. Ben & Jerry’s Dublin Mudslide. Also Starbucks Java Chip and B & J’s Cherry Garcia.

  14. My very favorite ice cream used to be Blue Bell’s Pralines and Cream, but then my husband moved us far away from any place where I can actually purchase any Blue Bell products.

I know. But somehow I’ve survived.

Then I bought an ice cream maker and a copy of David Lebovitz’s A Perfect Scoop and my life has never been the same.

Homemade Coffee Toffee ice cream is now, currently, my favorite.

  15. Oh Blue Bell Banana Pudding Ice Cream, you make my heart sing for joy.

You make my scale cringe with the weight of my love for you!

You should really try it if you have pproperly working tastebuds.

  16. Oh Sophie, I am jealous about the Blue Bell. (Seriously, Lauren? Blue Bell Banana Pudding ice cream may be enough to make me move to the South.)

Sophie, I’m at the other end of the ice cream spectrum from you — I love chocolate-based ice cream with stuff in it! My favorite is Bear Claw — chocolate ice cream with a caramel swirl and chocolate-covered cashews.

Right now Hubby’s at the grocery store with a list that is ice cream free. Earlier this week we were at the store and he hesitated briefly while passing the ice cream… which prompted me to sing a line from that immortal Dionne Warwick song, “Walk On By.”

I think I’d better call him and tell him to steer that cart (buggy) into the ice cream aisle before he leaves the store. Mmmmm… Bear Claw…

  17. Hey girl!
Do not, I repeat DO NOT bring the Blue Bell Groom’s cake ice cream into your house. I have been unable to resist on TWO separate occasions from eating the whole.darn.thing. It is AMAZING. Again, I am not a fan of the chocolate ice cream, but wow they got it all right in this flavor. seriously it is good stuff. If you venture out and get some, don’t blame me. I warned you that your jeans won’t fit next month. xoxo

  18. cookie dough!

  19. Stop it! You must stop this now!! I do not need to know about more bad things–our food tastes are too similar, i.e. bacon, etc., so if you like it, I am scared I will like it. Okay, now is when I should stop telling you what to write on your blog–sorry! I just sense trouble coming on my horizon in the form of some ice cream and calories. Oh dear!

  20. Oh, and I forgot to mention my favorite ice cream :). My husband’s homeade vanilla (the only vanilla I like), my husband’s homeade peach (or Breyer’s peach when my husband does not make peach :). And CHOCOLATE!! A delightful flavor I have discovered is Breyer’s vanilla with chocolate crackles in it. Mmmmmm!

  21. I just bought Nutty Chocolate on Monday night. And by Tuesday night, it was GONE.

It is OH SO VERY FABULOUS.

    Way to branch out!

  22. Bernadette says:

I love icecream there are few flavors I won’t try but my current favourite is Scotsburn’s Udderly Devine.
Here is how they describe it on their website:
Clouds of creamy vanilla ice cream with swirls of chewy fudge chocolate surrounding scrumptious peanut butter filled chocolate cups. It’s enough to take you away.

  23. I don’t like ice cream. :(

  24. We just bought this exact ice cream the other day. I must say that I love it every bit as much as you do! It’s my new favorite!

  25. Well, how does one actually pick out a favorite ice cream? Isn’t that nearly impossible? What with those fabulous ice cream makers churning out delightful new flavors every time you turn around?!

With that said, I think my favorite must be homemade peach ice cream… homemade as in, the salt and the ice and the crank. I had some when I was a little girl and I STILL remember it very fondly. I’m nearly 29.

I’m thinking that must qualify that peach ice cream as my favorite!
